It's a pretty great site, Influx mentioned it here, and they need someone to maintain it if it's going to last.

"Calling all sampleheads: If you think you might have the enthusiasm and resources and time it takes to run the Ontology server, please contact me to talk about adopting this community. I will supply the computer, drives, data, and domain name. You must have an always-on Internet connection and a spare static IP address. Ontology will consume a lot of your upload bandwidth, so a minimum 384Kbps upload stream is recommended.

Email me at canton@ontology.com if you think this is a project you might like to take on."

its a hotline server k, you need to dl the hl client sw then you can connect up to the server and teef the smaples.

in the email canton says he only needs help until he can get a decent dsl hookup in seattle where hes moving or something like that.

so is it like peer to peer ? - people would be downloading from your actual pc at home via this client? - who has a static ip address with dsl?? - only if it's a more expensive dsl package, most consumers have floating ip dsl.

yeah, if you're setup as a hl server people can dl stuff from your pc but you can't dl fom theirs, they can upload stuff however. Its more of a mac thing.

Does that make sense? Most servers are strictly upload in order to download though which is a right old cunter.

well I can offer them storage space, but NOt on that principal, it'd be straigjht server d/load normal - the guy can have his own account and administer all his added samples etc.

i seriously doubt that's going to work.

essentially, hotline servers _are_ BBSs; the whole uplaod/download ratio thing, EVERYTHING...

pretty cool though. especially now that we've moved beyond 2400baud.

"who has a static ip address with dsl?? "

you'd be surprised... there are 1000s of mac servers, and they all seem to be pretty good (i.e 20+gigs and DSL/T1/etc. connections). _no_ idea how that stuff is payed for -- i can't even afford dial-up!

you should check it out (but if you're on PC i don't think you can use hotline... it's a bit weird. my understanding is, hotline=mac, and ____=pc. equivalent softwares, but a different name. check out.. ummmm....

http://www.tracker-tracker.com/

which is like a search engine for hotline. or something.. who knows?

Yes, you can use hotline on a PC.

If he's offering to give away the whole site, why would he care that it stays on hotline or whether or not there's an upload before you download policy? I'm sure that policy is there to encourage the growth of the archive, and not for any other reason.

I'd love to see this become part of DT

well someone get some dialog going - I can offer him the ability to manage his sample collection 24/7 and that's that.. free, take it or leave it. - I can also give him a personal output page to display all HIS added samples on his site. but no ftp.

I've gotten a couple of decent drum samples from them. I think it would be bigger and better if it wasn't on Hotline. If it had a standard HTML interface and was easier to use, it'd be really cool.

heres the full email:

" Greetings everyone! Music-makers, beat-breakers, DJ's, producers, and noise farmers, all of you!

You are receiving this newsletter because at some point you filled out a web form asking for access to "ONTOLOGY", the most lovingly maintained collection of super high-quality free audio samples available on the Internet.

http://www.ontology.com/samples.html

CONTENTS:

* The sample collection has (finally) been UPDATED. It is now 25% larger, and more nutritious too.
* Ontology is GOING AWAY on August 1st, unless some sweet soul out there volunteers to help keep it alive.
* A WINNER has been chosen for the song contest!
* The password for logging in has been CHANGED. (Details below.)

*** UPDATED SAMPLE COLLECTION ***

Ontology has been around for about three years now, but this update includes the most high-quality breathtaking and funky audio samples yet. This is a substantial update that took one year to collect and edit. It's 430 MB worth, comprised of 2500 new samples. These were meticulously picked over, meaning that about 10 GB of uploads were discarded so as to distill these jewels from the fray. No cheesy house diva samples. Well, just one.

The new samples have been integrated into the general library, but they are also separately indexed in the "RECENT UPLOADS JULY 2002" folder. Poke through -- you won't be disappointed.

And you better do it soon -- you only have until July 29th or so to download all the stuff you want because...

*** ONTOLOGY IS GOING AWAY ON AUGUST 1st ***

Last week I spent a few days out in the Nevada desert, hanging out under the stars, dancing with some fellow campers. In a flash I had an epiphany, which was to pry myself away from the home and community I've built in the San Francisco bay area for the past five years, and to move to Seattle where my sweetie lives. Start anew.

I will also be prying myself away from my tasty DSL hookup. Getting server-quality DSL has always been fairly expensive, and since I'm not sure where I'll be moving to yet, I think it's very unlikely that I'll have Ontology back up anytime soon.

Calling all sampleheads: If you think you might have the enthusiasm and resources and time it takes to run the Ontology server, please contact me to talk about adopting this community. I will supply the computer, drives, data, and domain name. You must have an always-on Internet connection and a spare static IP address. Ontology will consume a lot of your upload bandwidth, so a minimum 384Kbps upload stream is recommended.

Email me at canton@ontology.com if you think this is a project you might like to take on.

*** ONTOLOGY SONG CONTEST #2 WINNER SELECTED ***

"Horror Story" by New Zealand artist Saratone (Beaten Track Productions) is a fantastic & ever-evolving hard-hitting rolling drum 'n' bass track. Super-dark, thanks to evil growling bass and subtle samples from the first Evil Dead movie. NICE TRACK, YOW! Saratone gets a full set of Ontology's samples on CD-ROM, assuming I can track him/her down at this point.

Thanks to everyone who entered, and thanks for being patient while I spent a year organizing all these new samples, waiting to announce the winner. The runner-up tracks as well as the winning track are available for download in Ontology's MP3 "contest #2" folder.

*** THE PASSWORD HAS BEEN CHANGED ***

To get access to the new and improved, super-spunky funky Ontology collection, connect to:

Address: HL.ONTOLOGY.COM
Username: going
Password: away

This is not a web site address. You need the "hotline" client software to connect. If this is alien-speak to you, visit:
http://www.ontology.com/how-to/index.html

*** GOODBYE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC PEOPLE!!! ***

Thanks to those of you who shared your music and your audio samples with everyone else, to those who sent me nice messages letting me know that Ontology made a difference for their music making efforts, to everyone for having faith and signing up for a service that claimed to be free and spam free (and actually was.)

I am ever your faithful noize slave and far-away friend,

-Canton Becker

looks like he's calling it quits without outright saying so.....

I'd give him a mail k, he might be interested in you hosting his stuff away from hotline.

Hell, I'd be willing to build a new interface for it in Cold Fusion, but I don't have a static IP or server space to host it on, and I'll be damned if I'm letting a stinkin' Mac on my network ;)

Really, though.. If hosting was sorted I'd be willing to set up a new interface for it and keep it alive..

The way it is, is much like FTP.. Not really any interface the way it is. Just a list of files to dl. I've been to the server and this guy doesn't have any u/l to d/l policies. Many servers do that because they don't want you to leach all day long and not contribute. And that has much to do with the server owner having access to programs and files that you 'back-up' on their server. Much of Hotline is based on the premise that you are backing-up your software and such. But you will often find the administrators requesting certain programs (obviously so they can make use of them).

maybe some of this info is redundant to many of you, but thought I'd say it..
