for the same price i can get:

a yamaha a3000 v.2 (16Mb ram, 500Mb scsi drive, 10 outs)

OR

an akai s2000 (2Mb ram, Eb16 effects board, 10 outs) PLUS a new Behringer 1204a 12 channel mixer

yamaha obviously but does anyone disagree for some reason? anyone?

I would go for the yamaha. I have heard that the Akai has a very userunfriendly interface

I'm not sure if I would have gotten the Behringer mixer anyway, I am not very happy about mine because it's so noisy. It is a 8 channel one.

What about EXS or some other software sampler?

yeah, the akai has a little two line screen. but there's mesa. 2mb is pretty stingey, you'd need to pop that up if you got it. really depends on how you'd be using your smapler.

definitely going to up the ram...

do you mean to say the akai CAN measure up to the yammy in some ways (cant really see how)?

i was just gonna use it for loops but, i might as well have the extras (filters, fx, wav file compatibility)...i AM wary of the known yamaha bugs (knobs, hd disk crashes, etc) though...

"do you mean to say the akai CAN measure up to the yammy in some ways?" uh, no. for stuff like drum hits, it's adequate.

and the FX on the EB16 are really only bread and butter stuff...some cool distortion stuff, etc, but NOTHING like the crazy fx in the yamaha

filters are better in the yammy, too

why are the yammies so cheap?
i saw an a4000 close on ebay a couple weeks ago for $311, and another one close at $350 yesterday with no bids. is it just because not many sample CDs work with them?

everything's cheap, but volume produced = cheapest and yammie whacked out alot of those.

the A3000 beats the s2000 from every angle. Filters are more and better, the sample routing and keymapping is more in depth, the effects beat the eb16 board on every angle, and every effect parameter is MIDI assignable.

A3000 knobs are a bit of a bitch, and scsi is slow (so's the s2000). Never heard of HD disk crashes and i've had an A3000 for almost 5 years now. Still don't see the reason for a new sampler!

I'll never understand why the 4000 and 5000 did so badly! Except there weren't enough improvements to justify an upgrade, but new users should have flocked to them...

I'd say the A3000 is the Best Sampler EVER!!!

got an emu e6400 for sale with the fx card, and internal 540mb drive with sounds loaded. backs up to cd perfectly with a pc utility I have. sell it with a few cd libraries (orchestral, greysounds,909,808 etc)and the patches I made from my analog gear,101, juno. what are you getting that yammaha for?

And IIRC, the Yamaha will take internal IDE drives. The A4k/5k certainly did...

A3000 doe snot take IDE drives. That's a bonus of the upgrade to 4000/5000.

brett:

yammy a3000 is Php 30,000 which is $600(!!!). and
thats used...it sucks being in the 3rd world...

i see a lot of more reasonably priced a3000s on
ebay etc. but a lot of sellers are unwilling to
ship to the philippines. besides with the cost of
shipping, taxes, customs fees AND the uncertainty
of my gear getting here at all, im more
comfortable actually going somewhere and picking
up my sampler with my own hands...

so how much did you say that emu was brett?

damn chroma...$600? I could find you one for WAY less than that...even with what we talked about it would be cheaper I think

and I can ship it too.

hmmm.

I would like $500. I will ship it to you if you insure it properly. it has 66mb ram and the manual. plus, I 'll be happy to help you learn the os via e-mail or forums here.

I don't know about better, just differant I guess. The filters are non alaising and are very creamy and clean. The a3000 has a harsher alaising sound to it. So for acoustic instrument reproduction the emu is much better. The ananlog smaples sound wet and gurgle like analogs Should. I think emu did a great job on the filters over any other sampler. they sound very much like the curtis filters on my mks-80, wet bubbly and clean without the alaising that you here on juno's and other analogs. The alaising on the akai and yamaha can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want. The patches are easier to come by and it supports akai libraries as well. It is the same as the e6400 ultra minus the 24bit file support, beat munging , and the rfx support. It can be upgraded to the latest os for $80. If you have your heart set on an a3000, then should get it. I don't know enough about them.I have heard audio demos, that is it. But my sampler is a damn fine sampler and extremely powerful, as are all the EIV samplers, and seting up presets is pretty straight forward. Also, my sa,mpler has an onboard 48 track sequecer.I didn't think the a3000 has a sequencer but i may be wrong. It has never been out of my room since I bought it two years ago.
