anyone got any tips on making short synth hits, mot percussion but a synthy sound that can be used as part of the rhythm track, so its got to be preety short but still be different to the real percussion within the track i have a supernova but cant quite get what i'm looking for without using samples from other sources.

I like to use sever volume envelopes for this kind of thing. Put sustain at zero, attack to taste. Your decay control then determines how long the stab is..

Craigs got it! Just tighten the sound with an amp envelope. for a percussive sound, keep the attack at "0". to bring the sound out try a little noise and an open filter...

also, try using a similar envelope to what Craig describes to do a quick modulation of osc pitch, filter cutoff, filter width, pulse width, etc. to add some funk to your transient. You will probably need to use a quicker decay than your amp env in order to hear the effect before the sound decays. Ya dig, man?

"funky transient!"

Yeah, homeless fools in wedding dresses and clown costumes rockin' out to the bass line singing 'bout the Mother Ship and a return to the home planet! "Brotha' (boom boom chigga chigga), Brotha can you spare a dime.. for the rocket ship!"

Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em!

have you tried the old classic dance 'hits' thing of taking short stab-length samples of what would normaly be longer sustaining sound?.. and mapping that over an octave? - works great - try anything that is a chord/harmony - say, sample a short burst of the pointer sisters holding a harmony, or a brass section, or a classical piece... anything basicaly sampled makes good hits... lets get back to the old skool!!

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!
