"However if we are asked to remix a vocal track we will always start by layering the vocal on to some beats, and see what fits. In truth I'm sure we don't approach this any different than most remix teams, and in fact we probably use very traditional structures. What makes us different, I believe, is the sounds that we use. Martin [Buttrich] spends a long time seeking sounds from every possible source, and we use Universal Audio Blackphase and Manley compression, a lot of analogue effects and pay extra close attention to the relationship between the beats themselves."

I know what a Manley compressor is but what's a "Blackphase"? Any good?

whoever wrote that probably misunderstood
when the interviewee said "black-face" -- as in
the UA 1176 limiter, the D and E "black-face"
revisions being the ones vintage gear
gearwhores prize most.

Oh cool, I know Urie 1176's. There is a neat trick you can do if your lucky enough to have one or be in a studio that has. This works cool on cymbals/crashes and drum loops. Just push all the ratio buttons in and you get this amazing pumping, sucking type effect. Its bad. Just like Chemical Brothers.

What would you say if I told you I had the stereo version sittin in one of my bestest buddy's studio, and it's missing a fuse cover, thus non-functional for the moment?

heh... iŽd tell you thereŽs a mono version sitting in a studio which is about to be dismantled and sold. it too is unfortunately missing a bit and not working correctly. maybe the guy would sell it cheap...
