I'm very close to buy some studio monitors (tired of mixing with the headphones :-). Is the YAMAHA MSP5 a good choice?? (caus' they are pretty cheap.. aren't they?) Or have you dancetech users find any another studio monitors (not in the GENELEC 1030 price-class) that kicks more ass than YAMAHA's MSP5??

How about Alesis Monitor MK II's or Tannoy Reveals Actives? Having an amp inside the actual speaker really DOES make a difference. I have Tannoys and can listen to them for 18 houa day without getting bored.

Don't know what your budget is, but I'm very happy with my HR624's (the little brothers of the HR824's). I upgraded from Event 20/20p's, which I think were replaced the the PS8's (?), and were VERY good for the price. The 624's are a significant improvement, but again, the Event speakers are a good value.

Just my opinion but I personally hate the sound of KRK's. The sound is too coloured.

Ok, thanks for the tips. Now I have something to choose from  .
I've heard from different sources that Yamaha NS10 is the 'worst' monitor, and the next generation of NS10 is MSP5. Hmm..

The best way to find it out would be to listen to a lot of monitor speakers. And compare them by playing the same record on all of them.
I think the most important thing is that it sounds 'true' and not 'fake' (like home-stereo speakers do).

I didn't like 'em either. Sounded harsh and sizzly to my ears, but that's just me I guess.

I like the events. I use PS6's and I love them. Great reproduction. I know nothing about the KRK's but it sounds like 29 Helens agree... (which doesn't make them right, hehehe).

MS10's do suck. But up until a few years ago they were the standard. Everyone had them so the thinking was that if you mix to them you'll be in the norm....

they are still standard, but iŽd never pick them as my only pair. only together with something louder and more brutal sounding.

Since the last time I wrote here, I've been testing a nice pair of fresh Behringer Truth's and a pair of Yamaha Msp5 (wich has been "on the road" for a while). Nice overall sound in both of them, but the Truths is bigger - so the bass response is better in them.
But I like the midrange more in Msp5, don't know why exactly.. When i played the Truths I raised the mid-eq all the time, to get the sound I was "looking for".. and i know it's bad to mess with the eq when testing speakers. Because they are not providing the "true" sound if I'm changing the eq-values.
And I also think the "stereopicture" (I don't know if thats the right word in english) was better in Msp5... hmm.

The shop I visited has the same price for yamaha msp5 and behringer truth. But maybe you get more power for the money if you buy Behringer Truth: 150/75 W (behringer) against 40/27 W (msp5)..
It is said that Behringer Truth is a light copy of the Mackie hr824.. so it would be intresting if the mackies has better mid-range and "stereo picture" for my taste.. But surley they are too expensive for me.

Well, I'm far from finished testing studiomonitors. Must be sure that I really buy the right ones.

Next mission is to test the Alesis m1 Actives (when Im able to catch up with two of them). I've read that they are very good for their price. And they are in the same priceclass as Yamaha Msp5 and Behringer Truth.

The HR624's are a nice compromise, compared to the HR824's. Check 'em out. And it wouldn't be the first time Behringer was accused of copying Mackie products...

listen rosebud, it's called irony ;p a dude at rogue music also recommended the KRK's to me, so influx is not the only one. but you should probably just get the most expensive monitors you can possibly afford so you'll be really motivated to like them. or really cheap crappy ones, so you'll always have an excuse.

You just might want to talk to these folks too. I've seen their stuff at some pretty serious high end studios and they don't cost a mint. Nice folks too. Some of their stuff is out of hand. The 9900 series sub....OMG!!!!!! anyhoos, the m6's are very nice.

I have KRK V6s and aside from some dodgy connection in one and a GOD DAMN GROUND FARKING HUM from my stupid darn MAM rack mixer they sound really realy really good for what they are

honestly Im amazed at how well I can go from these to pretty much any system and have it all sound like its supposed to (minor tuneups aside, of course)

yeah I still don't have any decent speakers b/c INS lost my wife's application and we needed to hire a lawyer and therefore I will devour the entire universe.
