This has been going on for a couple of years, and apparently if the guards try to tell them to stop smoking they just get told to fuck off..

Message 10/67 11-Dec-02 @ 04:11 PM - RE: No Smoking?
like these dweeb middle-class mums and all their 'smoking round my kid' bollox... then every day they strap them in a seat and fill their lungs with pollution while they drive them round town all day... AND they LIVE in a city, enforcing pollution on their childen because they are too snotty to move out of town and take a menial job in a supermarket or something.
Even if it'd benefit their kids to move out, their 'power-job' and all the rest of that city-life stuff is more important THEN than their fucking brat's lungs... so they stick in the city making up all sorts of brainy 'intellectual' reasons WHY their job is SO important that their kids HAVE to suffer breathing in tons of lead and other toxic fumes, yet YOUR cigarette is going to destroy their precious little kiddies life or 'ruin' their evening etc... yeah right!.. it's just Victorian style 'swooning' for the new millenium.
they can all fuck off imo, bunch of idiots. 200 years ago they'd be rounding people up for wtchcraft - it's just another modern urban myth pile of crap all that anti 'smoking' rubbish, and particularly I might add, it seems to be practiced by societies which have the absolutely WORST record for treating people nicely and fairly who are lower in society. It's just a fucking middle-class power game, cos smokers tend to be working class nowadays mostly.
also almost ALL the great scientists, writers, inventors, academics and others who created shit in the past, from Einstein or Lewis to the crew of Nasa or IBM or whoever etc have all smoked... Now those people are banished from institutional life and replaced by squeeky-clean brainwashed dweebs who fill in ineffectual 'target' forms all day.... fucking bunch of idiots... and look at the brave new world we have, all whitewashed on the outside and sanitary, and corrupt as fuck under the surface.
rubbish I say!!... NO-ONE used to complain about smoking but it's the new ethic like as if it's suddenly cool to call people 'niggers' or whatever... fucking rediculous, people are CONDITIONED to elicit that response, but ask them to provide ONE SINGLE scrap of evidence about any ill effects compared to that which they already are effected by daily and they can't cos they just knee-jerk and trumpet that shit without even thinking.
THAT is how STUPID people have become nowadays. 'smoking will kill you'... what a load of fucking shite. Of ALL the people I know who died NOT ONE died from smoking, even the ones who smoked!! - and also add the ones who gave up and then died of something else!!... I know people who have been killed by cars (several people I know died in crashes), trucks (my uncle was mowed down by a juggernaut), bikes (my mate ran down on a crossing), motorbikes (several mates died in crashes), 2 I know drowned, a few died of using badly cut heroin, one died of motor neuron disease, some died of cancer of the: bowels, prostrate, stomach, brain, another few died of heart attacks/disease (they DIDN'T smoke) etc etc... not one single SMOKING related death out of about 30 people or so I know who died!
I'm NOT saying smoking isn't BAD for you, of course it is, but so are MANY things we take for granted.
it's all just part again, of this brave-new-world ethic which these idiots preach....
that THEY in some way can DETERMINE the time and method of their own death... That is the most arrogant & rediculous thing I ever heard in my whole life & just further goes to show that our society is actualy completely INSANE.
"Yes that's right!.. I will decide when & how I die!!"
ha ha ha LOL!!! - do me a favour... You're bigger than 'God' or the force of the universe now are you!?.. what utter and total dimwitted arrogance!
people in the west are TRULY fucked up in the head it has to be said, and sadly the rest of the world seems to be following their truly terrible example..

you know the argument that goes "well, they cost the nhs more money so they should pay more tax" (that's used by both sides really) ? well, i read the other month that smokers actually cost the nhs less money coz they all tend to die sooner from *cough* *hack* cancer and not linger on into their nineties needing extended hospital treatment or home help etc.

'Smoke more, Pay Less Tax' campaign?
And forget the 4x4 pollution what about the pollution caused by generating the veyr electricty we are using to power our computers, plus the horrible pollution caused by the manufacture of silicon..
Now thye've got mothers scared to sleep with their babies based on some highly dubious statistically unconvincing crap piece of research...
And they are selling 'anti-bacterial' cleansers which not only are breeeding a race of 'super-bacteria' (which I, for one, welcome) but crippling our children's immune system... which needs to be exposed to a nice variety of bacteria to kick it into developmental action...
hohum... pass me a big ciggie..
Message 14/67 11-Dec-02 @ 07:01 PM - RE: No Smoking?
I'm with Influx on this. It shouldn't have to be a law. If you smoke, you should have some common f+ckin decency and not do it around my kid, or my pregnant girlfriend! I live in a city, and I support and WORK toward pollution cutting endeavors. I also drive a car when I have to, but bike and walk when I can... I'm not saying this to make myself feel superior but because you stereotyped the hell out of everyone who takes this position. I AM NOT a suburban Soccer mom and I do not feel superior to smokers. But I do support the right of non-smokers not to have this disfunctional ADDICTION forced down their throats while they're trying to eat, or conduct necesarry business in the world...
If a junkie shot-up in front of my kid at the grocery store you can bet I'd straighten him out! I don't really see a difference aside form the severity of the habit...
So there,

I wasnt talking about fecking pollution. I am well aware that there are larger fish to fry. I was talking about going into an enclosed space and not being able to BREATHE
yeah, Im a snotty, programmed selfish lemming because Id like to be able to breate. piss of with THAT shit.
oh, and your argument about "it used to be ok to smoke...never was a problem before"
??!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I used to be ok to say nigger and treat blacks accordingly. It USED TO BE OK to treat women as inferior. It USED TO BE ok to use Thalidamide (sp) on pregnant women
but these things are changing or have changed because of a key concept. AWARENESS
smoking in a public place without adequate ventilation infringes on non-smokers simple desire to breathe freely. simple as that. Again..I dont believe in laws to regulate this shit, and I dont think smokers should be financially penalized, but I do think its completely fair to have separate smoking sections on trains, in bars, in restaurants, etc..and that those sections should be heavily ventilated so as to not affect those around them.
its not punishment of any sort. just mere consideration.
someone got up on the wrong side of the bed, eh?

public transportation SUCKS in SoCal. I would honestly love to be able to forego a car unless I really needed it.
there are even bigger "pollution" problems but again Im not talking about pollution. Its a small issue the smoke thing.

Message 21/67 11-Dec-02 @ 11:41 PM Edit: 11-Dec-02 | 11:42 PM - RE: No Smoking?
I've always had an on again off again relationship with nicotine, one which is currently off, and in general I dunna have a problem with "smoking areas." An' yeah, smoking is bad, but it doesn't even come close to the damage done by power plants and cars. And for those who say a car/electrical power is necessary, why?
Personally, I dunna care if we all get black lung, things are as they are. Bring on the industrial waste, the acid rain, and make sure to keep watering yer lawn cos we want to look good as we all waste our resources... Trust me, in the end it'll all sort out just fine...
I for one...
Message 22/67 11-Dec-02 @ 11:51 PM - RE: No Smoking?
my only point was that the requirement that people not smoke in close public places is fair IMO.
Message 23/67 11-Dec-02 @ 11:59 PM Edit: 12-Dec-02 | 12:00 AM - RE: No Smoking?
As for not smoking in closed public places, I follow whatever society dictates... I do admit I thought it most amusing that when I was in Holland, the non-smoking areas were these little pariah-like areas, usually filled with Americans...
Although, honestly Influx, I don't feel right in a bar without it being properly smoky, whether or not I'm actually smoking...
Message 24/67 12-Dec-02 @ 12:48 AM - RE: No Smoking?
I'm not arguing that this environmental polution arguement isn't valid. I just think it's a different thing entirely. Like saying people who take baths support the bathtub industry and more people hurt themselves in the tub than anywhere else, so bathtakers have no right to complain about people who bludgeon others with baseball bats.

Much respect all around to everyone here, but just don't smoke in my face or around my kid... I don't personaly have an issue with 2nd hand smoke. I smoked for 10 years... Don't want to be all high and mighty, do as you please... just don't do it to those who would prefer you didn't!
BTW... I'm a big Fuggin hippie!!! I only drive when I leave town or have to take the kids a long way... I bike otherwise, or walk! I buy only organics and feed my children accordingly. The Organic cereal they eat is sweetened with fruit juisce, and the milk they drink is hormone free! The only hormones that get inot my family's food get there through cross pollination... unless I grow my own that's a fact of life, and I haven't the time or know how to do it! I DO still suck on the tit of corporate power but the dark ages are still a bit rough for this tender ass... however I am diligently (honest) working toward solar panels so that I can ween myself from that one as well!!! SEE, I'm a big FAT HIPPIE, that would like smokers to stop smoking around people who don't want to inhale smoke... "Is that so wrong" hehehehe
None of the above was intended to make myself feel special, BTW... it was in answer to the scathing indictment leveld at me for prefering good health to sickness...

but really, it's cafe culture mate sorry, it has life... not that sanitised world it has no soul, it's art is also vapid and commercialised tripe in most cases, it's whole cultural basis is to create some sort of squeeky clean artifice, with sanitised everything.. it's the price you pay.. you want people to be arrested for smoking within a certain distance of a building then you also get the rest of that sanitised thing too... it's THAT world, it all starts with something inconsequential and then the cultural revolution sorta thing comes down it seems.
seriously, no-one is going to argue about what you like in your own home, but the CONSEQUENCE of you bringing that child into the world should be that the world conforms to your wishes?... it's a false reality isnt it in some way then? - I mean, it's this whole rights in public places and you cant tell me that smoking in a park or coffee house or whatever, it's called culture mate... it's something humans have done for time, and i do say it's a more non working people thing, dont you?... would bar survive without it in a working area in the USA if it was like sanitised and no smoking and shit or is there a law about it all over?
I have to say, there is a distinct difference between a house owned by smokers and those not.. one smells like a toilet fresh...
NOT a rock n roll smell!
I feel more european myself which has that whole crossover cultural thing which just doesnt fit with plastic wrapped sandwiches, shitty weak coffee and that whole sort of superclean vibe.
You cant imagine these same people who make a scene in a resterant or whatever making a scene when they walk into the local bar up a mountain in Tibet (where they are 'finding themselves') and there's like 20 old guys sitting around smoking rancid cheap cigarettes... THEN it's 'wonderfuly cultural' or some such thing
lol! - sorry, i'm in an odd mood

Read my first post to this... I know I come off like I'm real nice and worked up... But honestly, I should stress "there shouldn't have to be a law"! I'm asking people to behave like civil hoo-mahns and not blow poison on my kids or on people who don't want it! That's all...
No way do i expect the world to conform to my values for my children! I understand personal responsibility... But that won't stop me from saying that people are behaving badly and that they should stop! That doesn't mean I expect people to have the same attitude, and I think loutish obnoxious people who complain and whine about these requests to stop smoking around people who don't want to smoke are just that, loutish and obnoxious...
I think it goes too far to suggest that they should be fined or arrested. We cannot legislate good manners, and common respect. And we shouldn't try... But wouldn't be real decent and fine if people just showed a little courtesy and differed to the needs and wishes of those who mislike their invasive behaviour? On a strictly personal level mind you?

one of the biggest shock to me in life is that most western children seem to enjoy hurting things.. shooting doves, smashing flies et al. i was never like that.. i understand/remember that i always had a profound respect for living creatures, ie. ailing fly on the windowsill, i'd keep putting him on his feet.
you will NEVER convince me otherwise that *my* wonderful instinct isn't absolutely natural and "your" stupid instinct isn't ingrained by television.
the end, full stop, you see.

if the lifestyle there isn't frugal enough, there's a thingy at arco called 'frugal soup,' where leftover bread and soup makes the meal. all the workers, idealists, big name field specialists on site all sit in a circle and eat this "unremarkable" fare while trading stories starting off with, well, frugal sort of stuff. healthy exercise, bloody filling.

Why do you continue to push forward with your life when you've this notion that we're f*cked animals that don't have any business acting like decent little creatures? That's not an attack, I'm genuinely curious as to how it's possible for someone to feel that way and not eat his children/family! Do you connect with other humans for the simple safety in numbers? Do you use these forums to simply improve your personal opinion of yourself? Again it's not an accusation, but I can't see any other motivation for living among others with an attitude like that.
Enlighten me, please.

In full agreement with you there mate. I am very optimistic about the capabilities of the human race. But I'm just saying that were lost now. What I mean is that all we have come to now is a bit of a random mess that we never had, nor shall have - for a while at least, any control over, and it's a funny thing to watch from the sidelines every now and then (although who am I to say I am watching from the sidelines? The very fact that I assume I can distance myself from other humans is confusing and funny in itsself.).
Errata, my trick to survival, when it's necessary, is to realise that I am just as f*cked as everyone else (probably more so, for thinking this way, but that is another story), and so I'll act like everyone else. It's easy, and occasionaly funny
And my opinion of myself is kind of hard to get across without actually meeting you. But, to use an example to try to sum it up, rather than freak out about the majority; all the "idiots" and accuse them of lesserness (if that is a word), I sooner accuse myself, as I am the minority afterall .
I know I don't make sense in text, but it seems okay to me.

If you don't want to be in a smoky place then don't go to smokey places. Don't infringe on others by banning smoking everywhere - that's just as opressive as allowing smoking everywhere, just in reverse.

Personally I would love to see better ventilated places, is all. I can totally deal with some smoke...but when it gets to where i literally feel ill and my eyes are burning...thats just BAD.
I dont want the govt regulating it, though, but...for the sake of "cant we all get along" smokers should be more considerate

The signature. A written description of you. This could also be arrived at if you group and tabulate what you spend your money on or time doing - still a unique descriptor of you. How does it change? What if we extend to a community, society. CAn we compare (geographically / chronologicaly different groups, say by analysing what m2 of retail outlets are selling what products, or how tax revenues are spent on which type of activity. Appologies to pro sociologists if this has already been explored but if not then we can compare and track social evolution.
By the way - I don't believe in this for a second - anyone who knows anythings about statistics can tell you about results being suited to the analysis method used in the data treatment, but maybe for you and me we can take the view of how we write and how others will read us

I'll bet there's not a "yank" among your land rovering neighbors at the coffee shop! If American culture is spreading outside it's borders it's because people find that bland, sanitized generic ugliness appealing... can't blame anyone specific for that.
I agree that some business owners SHOULD be able to allow smoking when the employees of the business are also the people making that decision. You've a right to poison yourself for profit, and I wouldn't dream of taking that right...
there is an arguement to be made for the employees's of a business being forced to work in UNHEALTHY conditions or loose their jobs. It's an issue that speaks directly to workers rights!
Still, I have a bit of the libertarian in me still, and I honestly don't like the idea of legislated decency. Just act like adults for f+cks sake!

This no smoking argument - I can't believe we are still here. Look, I do more like what I do, most people do more like what they should do. Thats OK, its a shame cos you only get 1 life (lets not go there eh!) but DO NOT think i am believing this common benefit leading to legislation is progress, its people ing with you and me, smoking, jaywalking, stand on the left. Its like an intolerant excuse and a ratchet and it moves. Its OK that the US don't smoke and put (what few?) people in glass boxes in airports, Americans live there and have to put up with that. But it moves, empowerment and presidence globalization of legislation - don't you see - they make morality a franchise, once you buy it the whole thing comes - a behavioral theme park where all of your moral choices are laid out for you - most efficient that way.
I agree with respect but not globalized respect, and certainly not legislated respect, then you are in a world that needs soo many lawyers and victory = money. Fck that all over.
Anyway I think my comparison about sound pollution is worth a word, anythoughts?

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!
