I need some help gents. Can anyone recommend me some albums/artists/etc please?

I'm after some god damn pimpin' soul action. You know that James Brown track where he sings "paid the cost to be the boss" and then the horn section plays a little riff. Well I think the stuff I'm after is from that time period. Can anyone tell me where to start?, I'm useless when it comes to 60s and 70s soul. But I know that I want the really cool pimpin' stuff.

Any soul heads out there?

I'm not sure what it is BJT. Basically, I was watching this programme on TV late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. It was called Ameriacn Pimps and was a documentary. It had the best music on it. The only track I reckonised was a James Brown track as mentioned above. I don't know if its more "P funk" that I want. I'm useless when it comes to proper 60's and 70's soul but I need to start a collection. Its was like the music in the film "I'm gonna get you sucka". Help.

I know this is gonna sound stupid but anyway - the stuff in I'm gonna get you Sucka is all the well known stuff. The stuff I was hearing in this documentary was the same style but alot deeper and hardly any vocals.

wow. time to go to the record store dude ;-)

based on ur description, I think you'd be into
BT Express- more on the party side of funk,
more dirty like the JB's of the 70s. Speaking of,
there are several crucial records on his label,
People Records. just like, 'people records,
vol.I', vol.II etc. Those were reissued on CD a
few years ago- purple covers i think. yeah,
that's got all your JB side projects, studio cat's
solo projects, real tight, dirty, on-the-one funk.
tracks that go 8 minutes on the same groove
;-) Sample-city but that shit's been mined to
death...

Linked is the 1st hit on a google search for
'james brown people records.'

have fun with a k.

i have a nice live maceo parker cd and yes...it does have that sweaty non-stop soulful quality....as which maceo is a very giving individual and
to the point of almost getting silly....with songs like pass the peas....and shake everything you got.

i also believe there was a point where very early reggae was finding it's identity and dub and soul interacted a bit. i haven't a clue where to start but you might try asking some old heads if such a thing were true. here you'd find long versions of american soul mixing with jamaican dub.
i like desmond dekker even though he sang sang & sang and then sang some more...probably more soul than reggae>
