Looking for a stable soundcard w/ 2 analog in/out and possibly spdif. I'm trying to do that budget AMD build k's been writing about. I plan to use sonar or another vst compatible sequencer.

I have read that midiman delta cards had problems with the VIA chipsets - but haven't heard anything about the KT333.

Any suggestions?

matt

I'm looking at the midiman / m-audio site and the audiophile 2496 looks like it might be the right fit, but understand 'PC requirements' I see nothing about AMD...

i'm using the audiophile 2496 with the same ASUS KT333 board as in K's article, and an Athlon 2100 processor, running window XP Professional. I basically did the same build as K, with a gig of ram, one of those 80Gb Western digital 8Mb HDs, and a 40Gig Seagate drive. Works great with no problems, and setting up was fairly easy. I reckon you'll be fine.

Yeah, second that - running an Audiophile with an older VIA m/board.... had no problems at all under either under Win 98 or XP.

V.easy to fit & set up, nice low latency drivers too.

I've had good luck with the Aardvark LX6. Not necessarily a "budget" card, but a VERY nice card for not a lot of dosh.

Starting looking at the digi 002... sidetracked??? I'm thinking that if I ditch my mixer and outboard effects, and take into consideration that I'm getting a sequencer and free plug-ins... its a trade.

Absolutely not, buddy. Let me introduce you to my friends Inflexibility and Latency if you go that route. You're better off with your first idea. PT sounds great on paper, but even professional TDM and HD systems suffer from latency issues. When you're tracking something live, you'll miss that outboard.

psy,

The digi 002 seems to be pretty well thought out. It operates as a basic standalone mixer so that you can work outside the computer and do your arrangement, track midi, etc, using the mixer without going into the computer. I understand the latency issues associated with a native system and I'm not expecting to be able to run live audio into PT LE during tracking.

I've actually pretty much given up on that way of working b/c I've found that I spend more time on the mix when I should be focussing on the initial arrangement, sound choice, rhythms and the like.

Another thing I've found is that with my outboard, really it isn't much, just a mixer and a lexicon mpx-1... what else do I have?? but point is I don't want to be focussing on 'the reverb' the 'the exact delay timing for a certain effect' when I'm tracking midi and working out an idea for a song.

When I'm satisfied with my midi tracks and idea for the song, that's when I want to track it and complete the production.

anyways, back to work.

heh. i just calculated yesterday that if i sell all my gear i'd be just about able to afford a digi002. the question is, why would i stil need it with no gear left? extortionists

word up. and where do i plug my active monitors into? if you tell me that i'm off to get an rme right now... i'd still need some kind of mixer, right? and thats kinda what i was trying to circumvent this time around...

nah milan,

that's the point. It is a mixer. It can operate as a standalone digital mixer. And no influx, I don't have a sequencer. That's a piece of the puzzle that makes the the whole thing make sense to me since the digi 002 comes with a sequencer and plug-ins (which I have don't have either of)

Off to get PC parts to build...

well you could plug the soundcard outs directly into a pair of active monitors...but then you have an odd situation for monitoring

I use an MAM line mixer with 4 stereo ins,...

but to be honest Im not diggin the fact that theres no seperate headphone control

yeah, exactly what i thought. so you're none the wiser. WHY dont the h/w manufacturers wake up to this fact! we all need mixerless monitoring i/o solutions nowadays. i guess motu828 and presonus firestation do the job, but firestation is stupid expensive in europe (compared to usa at least), and i dunno if motu works with a pc...

aha? do try to remember. i was thinking about this for a while now but stil havent found a satisfactory solution. in the end i'll probly end up buying a dsp 2000 or a delta 1010 and an analog mixer. i was hoping we've moved beyond that, kinda...

thanx iflux. psy- already thought about that, but man... its 21st century, do i really want another analog mixer? bah... i'll probably have to write to the manufacturers and see if they've got anything better coming soon, and if not then they'll hopefully get an idea what they should do :p

thats the thing... i wouldnt need a mixer, except the one on my soundcard, idealy. oh sod it... is there a little stereo in/out thingie with a volume knob on it that i can stick between the soundcard and the monitors?

look, all i want is a 8 analog i/o nterface that connects to a pc with a single cable, and has a monitor out with a volume knob. dont you think that should be easier to find than it is?

OK, here's my experiment. Choose this 'cause it was cheap stuff off ebay.

OK for soundcard M-Audio Delta Tdif. Has the Tdif 8 in/out digitaly, plus stereo Spdif and analog stereo out.

For the Tdif front end Soundcraft analogue interface for their 328 digital mixer.
http://www.soundcraft.com/products/analogue.html

Can monitor through the analog outs or Spdif. No Latency. Still would need a mixer I guess if I wanted to put a reverb or multi headphone mix, but thats what I have my Behringer MX802A left over for.

Another better option I just found would have been a SM Pro SM PR8MKII with a adat card (rme probably).

cheeky bastard! now there's a good example of lateral thinking. dunno why you'd wanna complicate it like that, but its still a nice original setup, probably good sound quality too.

I'm using staudio dsp24 value and the optional digital bracket with an AMD without any problems.

It's an inexpensive card, and works well... I've been able to get the latency down to 2ms. That's pretty darn good.

Yeah, but that is pretty much the lower limit...

I just tried going to 1 ms, and i got some major crackling sounds...

I'm using windows XP, with latest st audio drivers.

You can get this latency basically for any VST based instrument. At least all the ones i've tried.

As an example I'm using the native instruments Pro-53 demo with 2ms latency with no problems. At that latency, it feels pretty much real time, i certainly can't tell any delay.

I also tried to connect a guitar to the input, and play it thru some vst effects real time. Works pretty well.

Oh ya, i should mention

I'm using an amd xp 1800 with an abit motherboard.

But i'm not running the chip at full speed. I have it downclocked so that I can run the cpu fan from 5 volts instead of 12.

Why would i do that?

Well, it makes my pc virtually inaudible. I also did the same mod for my power supply. I know it probably not safe or definitelly voids your warranty, but i'm willing to pay that price for a quiet computer.

Well,

I mostly use Buzz www.buzzmachines.com as which supports vst plugins.

Running at 44100 16bit...

But i believe i've tried a higher sample rate, with the same results.

Hmmm well the higher sample rates should help on the latency front provided your PC has the muscle (Which it should have)

I guess Buzz has a smaller footprint than SX so that's gotta help you in getting that super low latency too..

Cool
