I'm gonna experiment with fixing up my wife's old PC have no idea where to start. I know that I can search the threads and pro-rec for a list of compatible components, but I'm a COMPLETE newbie at this kind of 'rolling my own' and just wonder if anyone knows of a good site or book that covers the basics, e.g. what are 'bios'?

BIOS: Basic Input/Output System. Like a little operating system which talks in machine code (i.e. 1 and 0's- binary) to all your bits of hardware and basically translates what the DOS (disk OS) wants the hardware to do into it's language and vice versa.

Theres tones of sites out there, do a google.
Sites I remember using:
www.hardocp.com
http://www.arstechnica.com/ -These guys know computers alright
http://www.sharkyextreme.com/

LOADS more, thats just off the top of my head. Loads of good tricks on there too, plus you could overclock it if you wanted

There is also tweaktown.com which besides having excellent and clear tutorials, also has links to other sites/forums for puter stuff.

I've always found Tom's to be a bit thick. They assume you already know alot. Plus, they make you read 6 pages for 3 paragraphs. VERY annoying...

Seriously, as long as you're not forcing anything into a slot, things only fit in one type of receptacle one way. If you can figure out your woman you should be well on your way

lol  just remember if your ribbon cables aren't ridged on the connectors, the red line always points towards the power connector.

thanks--tom's seems very good. on many others, the pictures are too close up. It doesen't seem as difficult as I thought. craig, I'm hoping that the computer will be a bit less tempermental than my woman.

Yeah, I have seen floppy drives that go the other way too tho, THAT got me.
It's easy to see it's wrong w a floppy drive tho, if the light is on all the time it's backwards.
