hi all,

have read in a couple of places that a good source for bas is timestretching bass drums from x0x kits- can anybody explain this process in a bit more detail? or at least point me to the place where it was discussed- this list is huge!

Just press C1 on your keyboard with a kick drum sample spanned across the entire (keyboard) range via you're sampler.

Yes, or use sound forge to timestretch it (wavelab will do this too).

actually just playing a x0x kick at a lower octave, while deep, isn't half as interesting as "actually" timestretching it. You kinda need a sampler or SW audio editor. If you use the timestretch function and stretch, say an 808 kick by 300-400% you get all kinds of artifacts and natural phazing that creates a lot more texture than simply playing the kick pitched down!

Even better yet as we're in the Synth forum. Get a 909/808 style kick patch for most any synth and simply lengthen the sustain. The resulting sound instantly inspires thoughts of DnB basslines.

Steve.

You've helped me stumble on something, I think they layer in timestretched/pitchedown BaseDrums to give a bottom end?

sure. there are tracks where the bassline is actually just a stretched and tuned 808 kick. lady dynamite "boo" comes to mind, i remember kilo also writing something about it.
