Original Message 1/28 29-Mar-03 @ 03:07 PM - modular synthesis
i looked on the internet but could only find programming tips..
is the sound drastically different, or is it just a different layout or something?
thanks~

in the nords, you have a certain amount of DSP and each module takes a percentage of it. but within that, you can use as many osc's, filters,
and other modules as you want. you can make anything from analogish sounds to FM to drum machines and effect boxes and basically any kind of synthesized sounds you can think of.

is that why on the modular, all the knobs have no function? do you assign it with the keypad thing or something?
Message 4/28 30-Mar-03 @ 11:41 PM - RE: modular synthesis
all the knobs on the nord modulars are assigned within the patches to control whatever parameter you want.
i have a micromodular that i got about 6 months ago. my only previous experience with synthesizers was with soft synths and a korg poly800, electribes, etc...
anyway, if you put the time into learning it, it is a lot of fun and very educational.

Not to say that learning about it by reading isn't good. Sometimes it's all ya got. But you owe it to yourself to find a real breathing modular and go mad for an afternoon or evening.
The only drawback is that you will feel limited with pretty much every non-modular synth you ever use after that

yes its true. and i love them all.
the sequencers aren't all that, but they really do sound pretty good.
super cheap as well.

But old analogs are still great

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!

In all seriousness the price of MOTM's stuff is not that outrageous, especially if you take a little time to learn how to use a soldering iron, and build the modules yourself from kits over an extended period. If you look at the cost of each module, you could build a modular that would have more function and sound FAR better than an ms20 for less than the cost of one from most dealers. Ever heard MOTOM's stuff? It sounds AMAZING, as in rediclulously good. Granted, some of that stuff is VERY expensive per piece, and when you add up what you could spend on it, the sky is the limit, but then so is the types of sounds you could make.
It's not for everybody, and in fact for most serious songwriters, it's exactly the opposite of what you need, but if you're a knob tweeker and like to have originals sounds, there is nothing better than a real modular. Not even a Kyma system, MAX or Super Collider.

harder to program?
well, the modular is great because there is
no limit on what sounds u can make when
you have 4 osclillators and 4 filters..also
mistakes could lead you to a new sound and
the fun...I was BLOWN away by the power of
the Moog VST Modular and I cant imagine well
i can how a analog synth going thru a moudlar
system will sound as compared to the moog
vst. Actually Im buying(savin up now) for a
modular system im getting
www.synthesizers.com and the good thing
about this company is that you can integrate
MOTM mods into this setup. The 3000.00ish
systems like MOTM and Wiardmodular are
great but I cant affford to sepnd that much.
....anyways Id love to see more young
producers to open their minds to analog
modular synthesis I dont want to hear music
10 years down the line that is completely
digital bu the analog vs digital question is
another topic. oh check out
www.modcan.com another analog modular
company...they have .mp3s to check out

I've only had 4 hours or so with it but the Nord Modular is fantastic. The only thing that really sucks is that you have no idea what knob does what on the thing.. There are no labels and all the knobs are freely assignable..
I already got a nice 3-osc FM-ish pad going with the formant filter... A very cool sound that isn't possible with any analog I know of. It's going to take a while though before I really get my head around everything in there!

If you want a 'REAL' modular, take a look at these modules ;- http://www.oakleysound.co.uk
you can buy them pre-assembled or as kits (cheaper)...

If you're gonna go with new modules, this stuff is pretty much as nice as it gets. Other companies like Wiard are also doing some really nice modules, and Serge is still kick-ass, but I've got a friend with these MTOM modules and OMG they sound SOOOOO sick. So stinky, warm, fat, defined, clean, and just what the witch doctor ordered.
