I've recently completed a (mighty beast of a) track in Logic 5, and since my PC isn't the hottest out there (PIII 733), I am forced to bounce most of my processor-heavy s/w to audio. In this process, I have noticed that the sound is usually altered to some extent, the bounced version rarely sounds quite as sharp and clear as the real softsynth. Is this inevitable, or can it be avoided with proper bounce settings? 16 or 24 bit resolution, split or interleaved stereo, dithering etc. I'm using the default settings now, with all the fx turned off. when the bounce is done, I copy the fx to the audio channel.

What works best for you?

don't dither, don't use split. use 24 if you want to.

does it really sound that different?

EH!?! What do you mean it doesn't sound as Sharp and Clear? That doesn't make much sense to me. But anyway, I just bounce EVERY single part (Audio Input from my Synths, EXS24 tracks, VSTi's, etc) as soon as I am starting to become happy with it. No dithering, no processing or effects, just stereo interleaved audio. If I leave any parts in the hopes that I can get them sounding better, I just end up tweaking and jamming the parts into oblivion and never write a track.

Regards.

Steve.

Well, the difference between bounced audio and s/w is mostly very hard to hear, not to say impossible when listening to a full mix. I think it's mostly in my head since i wasn't sure about the bounce settings and their audible effect on the sound...
