... in SOS. I tend to put more stock in them than I do any other mag outside of TapeOp. Its a glowing review. Anyone here had any experience with it? I'm not in the market now but when it comes on the used market I might consider it as a replacement for one of my lesser synths.

I've heard positive things about the Ion. Reasonably priced, no?

About $800 US, no?

My lowly local music store has yet to get any in. But most of the people who have tried it are quite impressed. I'm interested in getting the chance to play with one.

someone I know bought one. Aside from looking a bit 1960s scifi...the sound really is there.

sounds more analog ...you know? not too incredibly aggressive per se, but it has that...feel to it.

dunno. I kinda liked it. but i like keyboards with knobs. most of them at least

Ive already seen a couple used for $600 believe it or not. odd

cool. i thought the review was very interesting too, the possibility to model moog/obie/arp/roland filters and such.

I tried one recently and I thought it was o.k.
Sound was good but the interface could have been better. Too many hidden options, i hate that.
I like knobs that i can tweak without scrolling through interfaces. If you dont mind interfaces that are very layered, then i guess it would be for you.

I remember lusting after the AX80. Those cool bar graphs did it for me.

defeats the purpose tho. menus again!

60 had ZERO menus. what you saw was what you got

Back then I didn't know any better. All I knew was it was tre' cool looking. I ended up with a DX7. That was a mistake. I can't believe it took Yamaha almost 20 years to sort FM's UI out.

Nope- I went to 2 different guitar centers and stopped by the synth section (as I always do no matter what I'm getting at the place heh heh) and they each had one- I really wanted to hear how it sounded, but both places said that it was ed up- I asked how it sounded and they said it sounded great- when it worked...but prolly just some stupid 16 year old kid goin in there and fuking with the cables or something...

It looks fab in person

I saw one in a brief visit to GC recently, had a pretty vanilla patch goin on it. And for the life of me, I couldn't find a way to change sounds. I'm no synth newbie, so if I can't change the fuckin preset within, like, 10 seconds, it's already a big minus in my book for interface alone.

Well if I hadn't had someone with me, and hadn't gotten the willies from sales guys (they really make me wretch, physically), I woulda figgered it out innit

Personally if I go to my synth shop I expect a free cuppacoffee, a decent set of monitors/headphones and a fag and a chat....If I don't even get that: I'm out.

I need at least 4 hours alone with a machine before I buy it-> my mc303 did not spend as much time under my personal scrutiny before I bougth it.

Apart from the MachineDrum which I bought after 15 minutes...never regretted it one bit.

Anyway, I heard a lot of good stuff about the IO. They actually put some effort in making it sound *good* and unique instead of creating yet another virus/kstation hype machine. ;)
