..well not really, apart from my flatmate using my PC to download porn all the time.

Seriously though, I've just moved into a new place & finally got adsl. Got a couple of queries for you good folks:

1) When I stream audio, it's quite crackly and this seems to get worse the longer I've been online. I assume its something to do with the USB modem, but is there anything I can do about it?

2) The PC I'm now using for net access used to be my main music PC. Working on the principle I need to separate these functions, I can either buy a whole new PC for music, or run another boot of Windows on a separate hard disc. Cost/benefit wise, which would be a better choice?

Thanks in advance!

1 - This shouldn't be the case, and it certainly shouldn't get worse over time.

Find an app to test your web speed over time on the web (www.download.com has loads). Also, check your ram isn't getting filled up over time by a leaky app.

2 - Keep the PC, just run a seperate version of windows on your current HDD and use the second to keep your audio on. Partition Magic is a handy app for making it all happen smoothly.

Good luck.

yes, i've experienced that, what was it?.... have you got the latest media player? - I cant remember what fixed it to be honest, but the audio would crack up after a while until it was unuable and you'd have to pause and re-start any streams you were listening to.

what OS?

Thanks for replying all.

K: I'm running XP Pro, and listening to the audio with Winamp 3... I'll meybe try an up to date version of MediaPlayer and see if that helps. I've tinkered around with the soundcard settings and that seems to have helped.

Sitar: From what I understand, all the crap I have installed for net access ie anti-virus, firewall etc can interfere with audio stuff. To be fair, i'm not sure it would actually make that much difference to me (especially with the combined distractions of Reaktor 4 & Halflife 2!!)

The fact is a computer not connected to the internet has a much lower chance of crashing than one that is connected. Even a dual boot system is at risk from viruses/hackers. Don't forget about spyware either, slowly clutters up you machine untill it screws somthing up, and you are guaranteed spyware if you connect to the internet.

That's not true. You just have to be really careful.

Don't install anything on your PC. Don't download porn

Hey Craig check out this link,
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Download Spybot S&D run it and tell me wether or not you have any spyware on your pc. I'm not saying it isn't possible to use a pc for both but without a doubt you are safer using a dedicated music pc especially if you can aford it. I use one pc for both but I am building a second pc as soon as I upgrade the processor in my current pc. Even the most savy internet user can be victimized by the dangers of the internet. Even if you follow all the best pratices (never open unknown email attachments don't download anything you don't need use a firewall and shutdown unused services) there is still a chance of getting screwed. If you never hook up to the net there is NO chance.

Oh, I do use a dedicated music PC. But it is hooked into my home network, which is also connected to the 'net through a firewall/wireless router.
