Our gig on the 25th is looming. Its a small venue and usually its just dimmed lights, but we have a little bit of extra cash we can blow on some simple lighting FX.. there's a projector and screen at the venue too (which we're hoping to co-opt).
However, at the small gig we did last Saturday we used a couple of rented "Acrobat" lights on stands.. they were about £80 all told.. we're thinking of using that same money to buy a few small lighting bits and bobs instead of renting again..
We're thinking of getting a Laser Crab and smoke machine to compliment.. plus a T-bar stand and it all comes to about the same price as renting the acrobats.. We know they're not *that* sturdy and only meant for small venues (which is what we're aiming for anyway) but what do you think?
Specs and some examples can be seen HERE - this is a hong kong site but maplin are doing it for £35 notes..
The lighting isn't critical but it's a nice to have...As always, any thoughts appreciated

in full on nightclub darkness on the dancefloors away from bar lightings etc and with a smoke machine blowing thru them they can look ok, but there probably stronger ones than what ur looking at
at best id say if you were getting one of those and the smoke machine you should buy a couple of rotating white pin spots too, and put red filters on them ( or whatever color the lazer is)
one each side of the rig and the laser in the middle pointing up behind you guys with smoke machine blowing thru it in centre
you can buy rotating pinspots for im sure around 20 -30 squid each and chain them so the roate at same time

A little pricier than our original budget but I guess we'd be able to re-use 'em as opposed to one-off rentals of (admittedly better quality) Acrobats..
