Killers, U2, Razorlight,Bloc Party etc

Anyone notice how pop music has a very distinct identity at the moment, in the same way you might think of music in the sixties or eighties. There's some pretty good stuff knocking about in the albums charts. Its the like the total evolution of everything that happened in the ninties coming to the fore. Well thats what it seems like to me. A lot of eighties stuff on the mainstream radio stations these days too. I think as the media bubble consumes us further we'll start to losing all perspective of time... and its starting with the killers... its like those big synth rock bands from 1986 that we all cringe at but love all the same, but yet the killers still sound so contempory. Even U2 are hawking that sound.

i don't really see the connection.

they are all very similar- typical nme bandwagoin wankery- its like 'right lets decide what should be the next cool thing'- spend two years bringing out a bunch of soundalikes who as soon as they are established are being slagged for being too succesful whilst more commie-shirt-wearing nme bastards make up NAM or noname or something equally as shite...

speaking of shite i got that rephlex grime 2 album the other day.....new genre? its fookin' crap!!

As for U2, if you liek that kinda music try that band I mentioned 'SUNSHINE'... awesome! and very like U2. I've seen U2 live and i thought Sunshine were better if you take away the massive U2 stageprops etc. But even without the massive stage show I thought Sunshine were still better - they are from Czech

K - that Grime 2 is rubbish. Grime 1 was better. However, there a couple of producers on the Grime sence who are amazing. My 2 favorites are:-

DJ Distance and Search and Destroy.

yeah the other grime stuff has been much better- the whole grime 2 album to me sounded like a bunch of half arsed ideas with no real progression- dunno couldn't really stick it....

kaiser chiefs are ok but that only in the context of who they are up against in the pop market- not hard when you look at the competition...

i just found it (grime2) a bit soul-less, a bit too edging towards techno/drum&bass, a tad harsh, but y'know, good ideas, but just not so much my preferred feel.

sometimes i wonder about these major releases. People like Joss Stone, they seem so watered down compared to the greats from previosu era's and (no doubt) the greats we dont get to hear about working today - it just seems like some sort of halfassed corporate version of a great singer. But really she's pretty fuckin weak as both a vocalist and as a performer.

It makes you wonder cos i cant beleive the real star-quality talent just isn't there like it was in previous decades.

I caught the performance by Mariah Carey when i was TV channel flipping during that Live8 concert recently (hey, i aint gonna watch that tripe) - I was amazed how bad she was live, truly aweful! - out of tune, poor phrasing, lack of sustain (and breath frankly she sounded like she'd run the 400 meters after each song). How much fucking around do they do with that woman in Pro-Tools for gods sake!

Add to that the cringe-factor of her pretending to sing with a cute bunch of african schoolboys (who didnt appear to be even mic'd up, you couldnt hear them in the mix) and it was making my toes curl up underneath & scratch the bottom of my feet with embarrasment! - The cringe-factor was off the scale!!

standards have definately dropped for 'major' artists in the last decade. I had dinner 1.5 years or so back with some people one of whom was from Warners (I think it was), and this woman was banging on about how the guy from Pop Idol was so great cos he'd sold a million records.

I was like "But that wasnt like an artist, that was a TV show promo product, backed by the biggest TV show in the Uk"... sure, and Tellytubbies sold something like 20 million quids worth of goods (books/dvd's/toys etc) for the bbc in product sales in the first year apparently to put it in perspective ....and this Warners woman is carrying on like he's the saviour of the Brit music biz. Fuckin rediculous. And of course, where is he now?... nowhere like all of these TV talent show winners.

it's pretty sad. I cant understand what these people are playing at in the majors.

k... but surely you know its all about return on investment and shareholder value. if she helped sell million records then she indeed is one of the saviours of the biz, from the *biz* point of view that is. real art went somewhere else.

the spirit of the times is all about internet distribution and small net labels innit

i'm still trying to savor/digest this bit about the usefulness of dancing about to the cheeziest of pop as some exercise in awareness-building or enhancement.
this might take time.

a mix of the clash and prefab sprout?
do bring that on.

hard-fi are still holding up here. maximo park are sounding alright, a little 'strokes' sounding sometimes. not bad for geordies though.
