Reports are beginning to turn up around the Web that discuss how certain CDs from Sony Music come with a Trojan horse-based digital restrictions management (DRM) technology that surreptitiously installs itself as a rootkit on Windows PCs. When software surreptitiously installs a rootkit, it's usually doing so to cover its tracks — a technique commonly associated with malware such as viruses and Trojan horses. Rootkits generally latch themselves onto the foundation or "roots" of an operating system in a variety of ways that not only prevent their detection, but also their extraction. According to the Wikipedia's definition," a rootkit is often used to hide utilities used to abuse a compromised system."

i've read about this a while back.

They've offered something to remove it now because so many ppl complained. Even still, i'm afraid to stick sony music in my comp now.

interesting synopsis

sony did release something to fix it, but it ended up having even more security issues so they pulled it. sony suck.

And now there are hundreds of thousands of compromised pcs across the planet...

Go sony...!

Texas is suing them, plus there are a load of class action suits in the states..

heh, it just means (to me) stick with ordinary CD's!... you can play them in anything adn copy the tracks to anything... the d/load thing is just so problematic in terms of 'your rights' to do stuff with the music after d/loading

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!

But they are 'ordinary CDs' just that they install a f&*(ing rootkit onn your pc as soon as you try to play them.. nothing to do with downloading..

It's part of campaign to stop people buying physical CDs and download music from the internet using bittorrent and the like...
