Hi

I've been sent a 4Bit, 8kHz, mono wav file. It's 7MB. Wavelab doesn't want to know at all, while Goldwave and Audacity show a graphic waveform but play the file as a short burst of white noise.

Is there a resource for odd codecs? I don't have anything to open a 4 bit file.

Any suggestions much appreciated

…been surfing and reading forums all night…

Found loads of software to convert to 4bit 8kHz. But that's the wrong way.

WMP only plays PCM wavs (not 4bit). Tried a few extra codecs (celp, Phillips, etc) – no joy.

Seems files of this format are from mobile phones or Dictaphones etc. They seem to be commonly known as Vox files.

Found ‘4U WMA MP3 Converter’. No joy. Had a brain storm and changed the extension from .wav to .vox. I was getting somewhere, as a garbled mash like a badly out of tune radio could be heard in longer bursts once I’d run it through the 4U thing.

Goldwave can open it as a .vox extension too, with 7333kHz seeming to give more squidgy white noise than silence (though there’s definitely a voice in there, I’m sure I could even make out one or two words). 6kHz gives a Barry White, so I’m fairly confident the freq is over 7kHz.

This is for transcription, so I’ve got to get it a lot better. So anyone encountered 4bit 7333kHz files before? If so how do you play them? Are there any more common vox type extensions I could give a go (tried dss)?

4bit?

Are you sure it is PCM? Maybe it is ADPCM, 4 bits sound awfully few for PCM...

Nope, Audacity just shows the waveform, it won't play it.

Rags, it is'nt PCM, that's the problem. It seems to be 4bit 7333kHz!

Sender now says it's from an ICRB 5000 Sanyo.

Hey ho...

Spoken with Sanyo.

Their .wav files can only be played on their MemoScriber software (£30!)

Bloke said it was an LDAD PCM, but when probed wasn't sure if that was right. (PCMs aren't 4 bit are they!)

Apparently it's possible to convert the generic sanyo file to a common format from within the sanyo software.

Bar humbug fuss bother and itch.

I'll have to buy this memoscriber just to hear the recording to give a quote! Blart city.

There must be a way of decoding it. Sanyo stress it is .wav, not .vox.

Any further thoughts anyone?

i had this s/w but cant find it it might have done it, it was the one i'd go for when all else failed, cant think where the hell it is on the network cos the shortcut gor removed and cant search for it cos i cant remember the damned name. A very small applet which soley opens and svaes different audio formats and converts between them, not an editor at all - I'll try and remember the name

Thanks K, tried the Awave Studio...incorrect codec! Was able to convert a wma the sender sent as an alternative file made from the sanyo icr b5000 responsible for this blasted thing. But only 23 secs when it should have been 30min.

I've downloaded Switch, Express scribe dbpower, 4U wma mp3 converter and others. I either get an error or part of the file decoded (from 23 secs to 3min 17 secs depending on decoder used).

Thing is, someone else was able to decode and resave the original wav as a 6kbps wma. To further rub my nose in it, two other people (in australia & canada) were able to play the wma the sender sent the second time - straight from wmp

When I try I get the Class jobby and a trip to microsoft to be told there's no alternative codec available!

Perhaps there's a problem with this PC? Maybe the Audiophile 24/96 can't cope with 4bit 8kHz wav files, or 6kbps wma for that matter. Or could it be the AMD 1600 chip? I bought a new motherboard a while back (nvidea nforce 2 ultra 400 chipset based k7n2 delta2 - no less - and a new g-force mx 440 64MB graphic card) Could these be causing a problem?

Solution!

Winamp on Virtual PC on a mac G4 running OS8.6 plays the damn wma. So a lead from Mac headphone socket to PC input and I can record in Wavelab, convert to the right format, pass it to the emac and we're typing!!
