Hi,

I took a mono 6kbps wma file and converted it to a 16bit Aiff using a shareware Goldwave prog on Virtual PC (Win98) on a mac. All fine and well, the transcription prog (Olympus) on the mac played it ok.

I converted the same wma file on the same shareware Goldwave on a PC (XP) and the transcription prog on the mac won't play it!

Can anyone explain? What is different about Aiffs saved from the same source using the same software, but on different OSs?

Does the byte swapping have anything to do with it? Is this a mac/pc thing or a 98/xp thing?

lol... that does sound silly. yeah, i guess it could be the source formating.

say, have you ever tried Soundforge for that kind of stuff? it supports a humongous list of formats, maybe it could help you (?)

one can suspect it's to do with the virtual pc on the mac... can the files be played by another app ok?

Olympus reads wma tho doesn't it?

Yes, the PC aiff could play in quicktime on the mac.

Olympus on the mac is wma and aiffs etc but no wavs

On the PC Olympus can play wavs!

Daft innit?

Just curious to know why.

Milan, forgot to mention, but I've tried a whole batch of converter progs when I had a similar problem a while ago (couldn't play 4bit 6kHz wavs on the PC - could on an old virtual PC on an old Mac) - thanks for the thought and did you get my second PM about the need for a Serbian speaker?

Olympus DSS player for Mac 1.3.4.a(E) is the version I've got.

btw, Wavelab won't read the files at all! Goldwave yes, WL no.

Whoever is in charge of Audio formats should be sacked, mocked, then shot. Then all three again - followed by a severe finger wagging!

Considering MIDI was standardised so successfully, audio codecs are a real mess.

Sometimes I really feel like lobbing all this out of the window and taking up the didjeridoo full-time.

Have you ever tried to edit video on a computer?

Not really, though surely in this age of advanced digital manipulation editing video must be straightforward?surely?

I reckon if I were a digital photographer/videoer I'd be slinging the cameras out and looking for a chisel!

Eeee, I remember the days we felt lucky to have some selotape to master to...
