Waldorf has really blown it by not releasing the Q in the rack mount version. Who wants another kbrd? Most people buy a workstation for their first kbrd.
If the Q is released in the rack version, then, watch out Novation!

I have heard that Waldorf is indeed planning on releasing a rack version of the Q. They'll be dropping a few knobs though to keep the size down.

If they are planning on releasing a rack version it's still a big mistake to release the kbrd first.
And, there is no news about rack version at this place

here's the source of the info. not sure how reliable it is. this guy claims to have visited the castle as part of a focus group.

http://www.fortunecity.de/lindenpark/schwitters/37/waldorfme.html

Waldorf Meeting 2/99..

I must tell you this about Waldorf.. I were there and got some new info...
Some consequences and Results:
They will release a Q Rack (below 4000.-Deutsche Mark = app.$2325 ?). It will
have less knobs (necessary if you donīt want it to be 10 spaces high..)

what will be reduced? one set of knobs for LFO and OSCILLATORs will be there..
to reach eg. LFO 2 you will have to press a button.. the same with the OSCs..

the filterparameters like Drive, FM.. will be in the menu.. will cutoff
resonance and type are still controllable by knobs.

The Step-Sequencer will be on board but only via menu..

It was very interesting to see the place where waldorf produce their machines..
an it isnīt that big.. in the castle.

I really like that they are listening.. what we (I) need and how to make our
ideas become reality.

So we all want(ed) a waldorf modular system based on the XT (or/and the Q) that
can be freely routed/modulated (Clavia Modular??) but including Mac support..
they liked the idea.. and it really sounded that they want to do it! So it will
work like this: You put the new ModularOS into your XT and it is a modular
system that can be controlled by a Mac (PC).. the "old" menues can be used in
the "modular mode".. for editing one of the modules..

The digital outputs seemed not to be that important topic.. the Q will show
waldorf if it is a feature everybody want to have (donīt forget: you pay for it
even if you donīt need it)

ah by the way they will have the XT-Keyboard out soon

my suggestions to put the additional filter-parameter, the (soon able to
modulate!) FX and the arpeggiator on the 8 knob row (for Env. ctrl.): yes they
want to do it: Control them directly - nice!! The same for Mod.Matrix amounts -
eg. to change the LFO amounts without stepping around in the menue

some other ideas we had: the attack times can be displayed as eg. 1/32 (score..)
or LFOs in BPM...

Stefan Stenzel now develops a bus system.. that is great for routing!!
..the external inputs.. yes a lot of things to expect...

next OS for XT/MWII will be out soon...

I canīt list all ideas here (like that nice upper wavetable on the PPG)

..but I can not leave out the Filters: we all wanted additional filters
(formant?/other combinations...)

but of course (DSP power) the Filter2 is a 6dB and will not become 12..

some ideas of synthesis for future OS: granuar synth. (oh, how to control
that!!??), Karplus Strong (already done in the Q.. just press the right
buttons!)..

Waldorf will not make the XT incompatible:with and without 30voice extension...
if they do so on the modular system is not yet sure...

a blue version of the Q will come, too.. No more word on colours..

after that (...) I could touch the Q..

very convincing.. the concept, sound, controlling it, Filter FM, LFO/Env. Speed
(faaaassstt!!), FM for all 3 OSCs, mod. FX, Comb-Filter / Filter concept...

(why "Q" ? StarTrek, James Bond, Resonance?? no because it is next after P.. you
know why!! )

If you ever have the chance to go to waldorf.. do it! (ok - you are reading this
in english so you do not live in germany.. perhaps, ehm, you.. ???)

ok lets stop here.. even that wasnīt all...

it was great.. that day and waldorf, too!
to be continued...

The racked Q is not officially announced, nor is it positively planned.

Anything to be said about the racked Q needs to come from Waldorf, and no one else. The information above is NOT confirmed.

And, for some more info on the Q, I've been collecting tidbits for quite sometime:
