Personal choice...

NS10's are good cos they are everywhere and if you can make a mix sound good on them they will sound fantastic on a big system.

Genelec's and Mackie HR824 would be good choices two...

Pricey but nicey

Cheap HiFi speakers tend to colour the sound (to hide the weaknesses of cheap systems). Nearfield monitors are designed to be used in rooms that are not acoustically treated. Monitor speakers are designed to be more robust, so that you don’t destroy them when you play with the filters! Monitor speakers have a flat response, so that you can hear what wrong with a Mix and fix it.

Harbeth DMP-1 Xpression! monitors are fantastic. The bass is beautifully controlled and the midrange is really acurate. They are now sold by HHB as Circle 5's or something, in both passive and active versions. Also I think that Soundcraft Absolute 4P's are being sold off very cheaply at the moment. Basically the more you pay the better they are…

If you don't have an AMP then I'd definitely buy Active speakers, as the Amps in active speakers will be closely matched to the drivers for better performance at lower cost. Also it saves space and means that you don't need to worry about speaker leads, as the current going in will obviously be low.

Take some stuff that you know really well and have a demo on several types before you part with the cash. Like synths everyone will swear that the ones they use are the best! So I will just say that the Harbeths offer excellent value.
