Email me if you want to know my setup.

CD or record being released. To get this money you need a
publishing contract, otherwise the record company will hold
the money. As far as I'm aware the artist usually gets
around 80% of publishing earnings if they have a contract.
Well that's what I get anyway.
I had 4 tracks on an EP with another guy about 2 years ago.
You could probably call the music dance. It was a spacey
hip hop type sound. Yeah well anyway, I've probably made
nearly $1800 from the whole the thing so far including money
from radio play. The EP only sold about 280 copies, but one
of the tracks appeared on 2 compilation albums and that's
where most of the money has come from.
They were all done on a K2000 (that I no longer own). 2
of the tracks were done in a 24 track studio, the others at
home. Most of my friends seem to think the ones I did at
home sound better. As long as you get a decent mix happening,
the sound can be improved heaps at the mastering stage.

dont ask for publishing.........so they usually press a couple of thousand to begin with....
.and pay up after every 3 months.......
but publishing is different........you dont get royalties for publishing when a record is sold
........you get publishing for airplay........so unless it's a mega hit, it's pretty worthless,
however, if it starts to move on the club curcuit, & then gets on a compilation ,
royalties can get through......you gotta join ascap or PRS or whatever.........
Publishing is usually offered at about 50-50 or 60-40 if you're lucky.........
In the end, it's probably bettter to go with a smaller label, cos you get a straigh 50-50 cut
......whereas with a "Label", such as a Dance subsidiary of a major, you get offered the typical
poxy 8% or 10 % of 90% net mechanicals deal......which translated means "Fuck-all"............
just find a label which is known & respected for putting out good product ....
and get a straight cut deal.......or better still....cut it yerself.....(greater profits !)
In the meantime, protect your work by posting it to yourself registered/dated mail delivery, or put it in the vault of your bank, with a dated reciept.....this is fine to protect your work.......

That's the 10 to 12% I was talking about. This is aswell as mechanical
royalties which are usually 10% for a single, 15% for an EP,
and 20% for an albums. Anything less and you're getting
ripped off.
Kilo, are you sure about publishing usually being 50-50, or 60-40?
If this is the case I must have a pretty good deal.

have mentioned was ..I heard that if you go through a company
like ascap, amcos or who-ever, you rarely get paid much at all
unless you're a major artist. My label here in Australia do distrubution
for a lot of labels like Ninja Tune etc, and apparantly a lot
of them don't get any money from amcos the Australian version
of ascap...I'm not to clear about this, but apparantly with a
good publisher you can bypass these companies and get your money.
I'm not sure what the deal is in the UK for you guys though,
but whatever way you go, just make sure you know what your
getting yourself into...I've heard of quite a few dance artists
who got bad deals early on and weren't getting paid even though
their song may have been in the charts or something.

Basically, they do surveys of station figures, etc etc...it's all very approximate......as I said publishing, really is a grey area unless you are really shifting product, then your unlikely to get any as you are at the bottom of the heap........hey....but ALL musicians get ripped off mostly, so no surprise there........dont become a muso for money reasons that's for sure !!!

They're cool, they pay you....Yeah, and I understand that musicians
do get ripped off,, especially with the prices companies like
Roland and Korg sell their gear for!!!
