Original Message 1/18 07-Aug-97 @ 10:39 PM - RB 338 uses SAMPLES !!!!!!
The TR808 from Rebirth RB 338 uses
AIF (Macintosh) Audio Files (Samples).
No Physical Modeling, just Samples !!!!
Thatīs true and no Fake, you can easyly
exchange the Samples with your own (TR909s for
example).
All you need is RIPPER5 and HEXEDIT !!!!!
Holger
Hey Kilo,
soon i send a modificated RB338 Demoversion with
909 Samples to you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Heads are liers !!!!!!!!
They have done such a good Job and normally have
no need to tell the untruth about the Samples...
Itīs no shame to use Samples (even when you
have so nice Microsynths besides the SamplePlayer)

Yesterday i ripped all the 808 samples (all in AIFF format)
out of Rebirth... i called holger and asked told him about
this.. he said that the propellerheads claim they have not
used any samples in there rb338.. which is not true!
I used Ripper5 and a hexeditor to replace the samples inside
the Rebirth.exe and it worked!
Now i have a brand new bassdrum sound =)
the following text is from "www.propellerheads.se"
--- Why an 808, why not the 909?
--- There are many answers to that question. We are of course perfectly aware that the 909 is the obvious choice for
--- a virtual techno studio. We picked the 808 because it's a 100% analog machine which is totally in line with the
--- whole idea of ReBirth, whileas the 909 contains samples. Also, most people have access to tons of drum sounds
--- anyway, through external samplers and synthesizers that provide a lot more flexibility in terms of outputs etc.
--- than your sound card does. The 303 emulation is the vital part of ReBirth, while the drum machine is more of an
--- add-on.
--- Why an 808 model, can't I just as well use the samples in my synth?
--- No, not really. While an ordinary sample of an 808 snare might sound as good as one snare hit from our 808,
--- there's a big difference when playing back a complete pattern. The real thing is analog and there are small
--- variations in sound from, beat to beat, which we recreate. Furthermore, our product has all the controls, including
--- the "Snappy", "Decay" and "Tone" controls, which means it can be used to create all the original sounds.
You can get Ripper5 at "http://www1.tu-chemnitz.de/~til/zips/rippr500.zip"
Happy patching! ;)

People who have access to resource editors can do anything they want with
the samples, we don't care. Every day some dude chokes our mail server by
sending a modified version of RB-338, with this and that drumsound
replaced. It's cool by us but we wish people stopped sending us 4 meg mails.
>And why are u telling the untruth about the 808 ?
We have never said that the 808 doesn't use samples. The text you're
quoting ("Rebirth uses virtual modeling to emulate each sound filter and
function of a
real TB-303 and TR-808 synthesizer. Rebirth doesn't use sound samples to
recreate an authentic sound--instead it uses physical modeling to emulate the
instabilities of analog hardware.") was not written by us.
>Whatīs this "cowbell" Shit in the broschure !
You're referring to "even that cowbell..."? It's a shitty sound. It
deserved some kind of comment.
>So, SampleHeads - whatīs up now?
A) You're making such a big deal out of it, it's like you've made this
groundbreaking discovery. Everybody KNOWS that it's sample based. We're not
trying to hide it since it's totally obvious. Any idiot can figure out that
if it takes a Pentium to recreate two oscillators (i.e. two 303s) in
realtime, it would take about 16 Pentium Pro266 MMX to recreate an 808 with
virtual modelling since each sound in the 808 has its own oscillators, up
to four of them. A Pentium 100 would crash at the mere idea of calculating
the 808 cymbal in real time.
B) SampleHeads is another company, see www.sampleheads.com.

And where in the above text do we say that our 808 is NOT sample based?

The above is 100% true, since we DON'T use one single sample to recreate
the snare. The variations in the 808 sound are due to the white noise part
of the sound. Therefor we sampled four different white noise waves. Each
time the snare is played, one of these four samples is picked at random.
The snare consists of 6 samples and two filters in total.

I hope the next Machine the Prop-Heads recreate, is
a Yamaha A300 Sampler...
