outhere must be pulling out your hair and cursing.
I am not be disrespectful....
Anyways after having searched in vain for a program
that would even pick up a kick drum frequency and
report on the BPM of the track never mind trying
to find a program that would allow the control
of two CD-Roms wich using buffering would allow
you to adjust the pitch of each Cd so you could
"MIX"
I have recently met a school going lad who's not
to shabby with programing and we hope to get a
Program like this of the ground.
There are many problems that we face concerning
the interface but I do beleive we can overcome..
Please let us know what you guys think and what
you would like to see in such a program.

I have on my drum machine...I assume you have half-a-
sense of rhythm- just make it so you press the spacebar
or whatever on the beat- make the computer figure out
the tempo by how far apart you tapped out two (or
more) beats.
Then if something goes out of synch, you could adjust
it a little (although this may done better by having
virtual tempo sliders on-screen). You could also mix
stuff double-time or cut-time, i.e. an 80bpm hip-hop
beat with a 160bmp jungle cut...
Naw mean?
YOU would control the tempo on both decks, don't worry
about your inherently unfunky computer.
Maybe then you could have it save the bpm count for each
disc...so you could pre-figure it all out.
Respek,

Believe it or not I had exactly the same idea as you a
couple of weeks ago when I replaced the CD drive in my
machine at work and brought the old one home with the idea of having a second drive in my machine
that I could use solely for playing CDs.
The prospect of having a fully featured CD mixing system
in your PC for just the cost of an extra drive and
software is pretty stunning it has to be said and if it
were done properly it should blow most of the dedicated
dual CD players out of the water EXCEPT (like you say)
for the interface which is still going to be confined to
point, click, crash etc...... (maybe you could use
mouse/jpystick/trackball movement to simulate the
turntable wheel?)
ideas like this are needed to move mixing on to the next
level and DJs who don't accept that are going to die a
death..
I probably haven't given this as much thought as you but
to my mind the advantages would be:
you wouldn't be restricted to pitching up/down by only
8%
the program could be made to actually sync the beats for
you!
the potential for sampling and mixing on the fly would be
great! there's too many possibilities to mention
basically all the advantages of CDs, samplers, and computers combined
into something that should by far oustrip a pair of turntables in its
creative potential.......
and the disadvantages :
computers don't like sweaty nightclubs
surely some minor hardware mods would have to be made to
a PC for it to be able to mix 2 CD outputs and leave a
channel for cueing?
wouldn't the above put off casual downloaders?
the interface
the interface
the interface
vinyl DJs would HATE you!
Anyway, it's a very exciting idea and I hope you succeed
in bringing it to fruition.
That aside I'd just like to say I think the "Anti CDJ"
attitude amongst British clubbers is very retrospective.
Dance music is (supposed to be) a progressive art form
and the DJs who make the transition NOW from vinyl to CD
are going to have a major advantage in a few years time
when vinyl finally dies off.
It's the same with the Roland 909 and 303. These sounds
have just about been worked to death yet still people
resist change. To me the 303 is now just about the
equivalent of the electric guitar : Yes, electric guitars
were very new and exciting in the 50's but 40 years later?
NOT!
Ditto the 303, we've been hearing it for nearly 10 years
now!
Respect
Mike

with running programmes like rebirth & cubase together in sync, windows wont allow 2 simultaneous streams of audio from 2 programmes, unless both the programmes & card are Active-X compatible ....that is correct yes ?.....so how will you get the 2 cd's to play together ??.......
also, you'd need a very good soundcard to use with this otherwise you'll get a crap sound, and none of the decent vards are active X compatible as far as I know....then.....
have you ever tried controlling a computer mouse at a live gig ??.... I can tell you that trying to position a mouse over a button when there's a 10K turbo-sound system banging away next to you is bloody impossible.....
next....the vinyl V Cd thing......you say vinyl will die out....absolutely NO way.....
as vinyl is FAR superior to CD especially when played loud......as CD's can only capture a couple of the harmonics, whereas vinyl gets most of them.....you'd have to sample at about 128k with 64 bit sampling to start to approach vinyls content.....(thats also why the mastering medium of choice for club tracks is still 1/2 inch 30 IPS tape format.... ..also, vinyl is easy & cheap to get pressed,
easy & cheap to get acetetes etc etc....I cannot ever see it dissappearing.....
I'm not slagging the idea, just interested in how these limitations would be got round, or if they even apply..... cos there are plenty of cheap hardware dual CDJ deck on the market already.........forgive me if the dual audio thing doesn't apply to CD's.....but even 1 audio stream can already be fucked up by something as simple as a split second bus lock from the graphics card....

not all of us have the money to buy a k2 or anything made
by Roland. I agree that it would be very difficult to use
a mouse to control the mixing, and so it would be a lot
easier to just use arrows on the keyboard. You were going
to include a crossfader and separate volume controls for
both channels, right? And right next to the BPM counter
would be the time remaining on track counter for each CD,
right? Let us know.
