I have digital in & out on my sampler. Now, I want to edit samples on my pc. I normally would do this using a SCSI chain. Of course, the latter option is without data loss/loss of sound quality. If I were to send data through a digital in/out to my sampler and back to my pc, would there be any data loss? I tried it and it sure matters which method is used......

S/PDIF is digital - i.e. no data loss. S/PDIF isn't designed for transferring samples to/from a PC - it's designed for recording the output of a sampler w/o having to send the signal thru' an D/A - A/D. It's possible to edit samples on your PC after transferring them by S/PDIF, but it's a lot of hassle. If your sampler supports SMDI then get a cheap ISA SCSI card for about £40 (~$60). Then you can use SoundForge - or something similar - to edit your samples & set loop points etc.

later...
