Any thoughts on adding a subwoofer? I'm currently running Event monitors off a Philips 40w/side home receiver with JBL surrounds. My room acoustics are complete shit. Do I need a separate amp? Is a high quality sub- really an issue? Radio Shack's got one on sale 50% for $100. Can I put it in a corner, or does positioning even matter (everyone tells me that it doesn't, but they're not engineers)?

Hmmmm ! Depends how your setup sounds at the moment. If you play other peoples stuff through your rig, is the bottom end a bit weak ? . As Kilo mentions somwhere on this site (Mixing I would think) it's a bit dodgy monitoring through a tonally uneven rig cos you'll EQ for your bass heavy setup then if you play it on anything else it'll sound like a fart in a bean tin, cos other people's "Hi-Fi's" just won't reproduce the bottom end that you'll get though your system. (I'll try to write in sentences now). From past experience, doing stuff like adding a bin just makes the overall sound muddy and unbalanced. Its like those people who put cheap a 15" speaker in the boot of there car, OK it's loud as fuck but you can't tell the difference between Mozart and the Chemical Brothers.

If you want the absolute best, tightest sub in the world....there is only one....Velodyne....check it out velodyne.com....servofeedback with accellerometers....this is the best of the best...if you really want to HEAR the base be tight and now big and loud and sloppy like most subs....also if you can give 3K the Genelects systems are very nice too.

Oh, I see how it is, I ask for a little advice after I'm always tryin' to help everybody else, and Kilo's gonna pull attitude 'n try ta school me. I'm 'bout to school you, boy, seein' as I'm currently playing cheap-o in-house music editor at New Line Cinemas and do indeed have to be handing them mixes in surround sound to match their system, which includes a subwoofer. Punk-ass limey bitch.....;)

Now someone want to give me some real advice? I don't care 'bout no boutique shit, I'm talkin' hundred-fuckin' dollar Radio Shack!!! Do I need a pre- out and a separate amp or could I get away with wiring it in series with my other speakers? How 'bout those cheezy little computer subs?

oooooooooooooooooooooo !!!........ hol' tite geezer.!!!!.....can't you tell it was a joke ???..... so don't gimme that shite you ****** *** ****** **** !!! :-)

.....now then........ sub's will allow you to HEAR.....er.....sub-bass..... when the speakers you use trail off at around 80- 60hz (small speakers).... the sub-bass will probably be there anyway, but you can't hear it......... so you shouldn't mix it any more bassy.... it'll just allow you to actually hear it....... er.... right..... I'd suggest....has your amp got 2 set's of speaker outs.... if yes, then add a sub-unit to that second pair connection... stick it on the floor....... in between the stereo speakers... (can be under the desk or whatever but always on the floor....).... loads of manufacturers make 'em.... er... have to say, I'm surprised you got a job doing that, and can't wire in a sub-bass unit..... what exactly does this whole system comprise of... amp/s... speakers/ decoders/encoders..... speaker connections..... etc etc.......???..... rsvp..... (however, if the rooms shite, it might make MORE problems..... if you wanna hear the sub-bass, just stick your head in the corner of the room where the two wall meet..... then you'll hear it......if it's there.....

Most all of the add on sub-woofs have a passive x-over built in so you run left and right signals to the sub and it outputs left and right x-overed signals to your left and right satellites. Your center and surround speakers don't enter into the equation. Get at least a 10" or 12" speaker, those little computer subs suck.

You should try and listen to JBL subs (around $290). Even though they are not expensive and sell at Brandsmart, they have a flat response. You should use your Sub in 2 situations :
1) To check low frequencies to be shure they are well placed in your mix;
2) To impress your clients when you show them the project.

Be shure to listen to records you know VERY WELL through the system and adjust the level and crossover point EVERYTIME you mix a song.

Get a powered sub, like JBL's .
If possible, use a flat amplifier with your monitors as well. A-B both amps all the time.

The position of the sub IS important in a mix down situation since your room resonates. Try to keep it close to your body.

Good Luck !

No worries, "mate", suppose you're English sensibilities left you at a disadvantage deciphering the obviously superior American jabbing ;) I was just fuckin wit' you back.

In some kind of delusional fit I saw myself mixing dst surround DVD's in my project studio, even though I'm still using my shit Mackie board and a crap English receiver as an amp. The system at work is ProTools-based with Tannoy 8"s all around and a Paradigm sub-, with an active speaker switcher. The room itself is pretty nice, kind of pentagonally-shaped with thick fabric on the walls and lots of cushiony chairs to soak up the sound.

While I'll admit that I'm not that great of an engineer, I do know my basics, but you gotta understand that 1) my job isn't being a sound mixer, it's music editor, which means I spend all day putting music to fit the cues, and 2) I'm trying to wire up some cheap-ass little hack setup, which I've never had to deal with being in a real studio.

Anyway, to get to the point, I don't have a lot of space, so the monitor will be placed in a corner of the room behind my keyboards going through a little $15 speaker switcher. I already paid for the sub-, but I'll return it if the resonance kills me or I can get a better lead on that JBL. (what's "Brandsmart"?)

oh yeah, ya wanna start talkin' geezer now, Kilo?!? judgin' by that ol' picture goin' 'round, you're 'bout as old as my mother! ;) Figures that played-out ancient Ice-T motherfucker couldn't handle anyone young enough to be around him fuckin' wit' the image ;)

I doubt anyone care, and you shouldn't, but the subwoofer didn't go so well. Maybe with a quality crossover and a good room.
