Original Message 1/11 10-Mar-98 @ 08:46 AM - TR808 CRASH CYMBAL
an 808 crash cymbal using analog modules like
noise sources, EGs, filters, etc.
I wanna know the audio and control path and
the settings of the parameters in each module.
If anybody know the original setup please e-mail
me or write the answer here.
Thanks
Kilo, you looks very wise in music technology,
do you know the answer?
Thanks again

I program lot ot TResque drums in this keyboard, but I
actually donīt know how to setup my Proph to get an

of sounds.,

make 808 crash on this synth.
Because You need minimaly four voices.
Make a sound with normaly pulse wave (no square).
Hold four keys and use a highpass filter to get a metalic noise sound. Now make a short or long decayed envelope and that is all. Try change the intervals between the keys.

Hi-Hats
To create great analogue hihat
and cymbal like the TR808 is tricky with monosynths. To put it in
the words of the TR808 service manual, the main sound generating
source of their metal sounds is "The combined square wave
outputs of six Schumitt triggers..."
So forgetting that, I usually use
ring modulated type sound. Create a nice metallic discordant and
high pitched sound.
Then, set a very short release time on the VCA envelope, and a
long decay. To play the closed hihat sound, play staccato notes,
and play a long note for closed sounds. Try adding some noise
into the sound.

I WAS CREATE SOME 808ESQUE HI-HATS IN THE PROPHY FOLLOWING THE PULSE WAVES IDEA WITH JUST 2 OSCILLATORS!!!
ONCES YOU FOUND THE CORRECT PULSE WIDTH AND PITCH INTERVAL, THEN APPLY ARESONANT HPF AND A PERCUSSIVE VCA'S EG LIKE THE ONE WHO KILO SAYED ABOVE.
I WAS PROGRAM HI-HATS FOR YEARS IN MY ANALOG SYNTHS USSING JUST HI-FILTERED WHITE NOISE, BUT THE TIMBRE THAT YOU GETS WITH THIS TECHNIQUE IS REALLY DIFFERENT!!!
ALSO I WAS USE THE IDEA OF DIFFERENT RATES FOR DECAY AND RELEASE FOR A LONG TIME, BUT FOR ME IS MORE INTUITIVE AND USEFUL TAKE THE VALUES IN THE OPOSSITE WAY, I MEAN PROGRAM THE DECAY TO SHORT TIMES AND THE RELEASE TO LONG ONES. THIS APPROACH LETS YOU "CLOSE" THE OPEN HAT BY PRESS AND HOLD THE KEY WHILE THE LONG SOUND IS HAPPENING.
FOR ME IS MORE "REAL" THAT A PIECE OF METAL LIKE THE CYMBALS PRODUCE A LONG SOUND IF YOU HIT AND APPART THE STICK INMEDIATLY (LIKE A STACCATO NOTE) AND A SHORT ONE IF YOU HIT AND KEEP THE STICK IN CONTACT WITH THE METAL AND MUTTING IT (LIKE A LONG NOTE)
LET ME TELL YOU I WAS PROGRAM A FEW FM ANALOG-LIKE CRASH CYMBALS THAT SOUNDS DECENT ENOUGHTO USE THEM IN A TRACK.
THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP!!!!
