I don't understand CV/Gate. What can you do with it? I have been offered a great deal on a Roland SH-2 and it sounds super fat, but I only want it if i can sequence the damned thing externally. If you get a MIDI-CV converter, what is the level of compatibility? (i know different manufacturers used different CV/gate standards...) Will I actually be able to sequence the thing from a MIDI sequencer with this converter, or will that just automate stuff like filter sweeps? Thanks a lot...

YES! YOu will be able to sequence it with a CV-MIDI convertor.... In fact, I think that CV won't control things such as filter sweeps.... YOu can get it to play notes, tho... And (NOt Kenton... hmm... ) I don't remember who it is, but they make CV-MIDI convertors that are cheaper than Kenton, and the people on Analogue Heaven say that they're just as reliable... The SH 2 is one of the synths supported... Buy it! The little things are great!... HOw mmuch are you getting it for?

I think Sedusa reffers to the Philip Rees "LITTLE MIDI/CV" converter. Yeah, it's cheaper than kenton's stuff and it will work perfectly with thw SH2.
You CAN transforms MIDI controller data to CV and control the cutoff frequency of an analog synth if the converter have a dedicated auxilliary CV control output (I don't remember if the Philip Rees unit have one, but Kenton's units usually presents this kind of connector) and if the synth to be contolled have a cutoff CV control input (again I don't know if the SH2 have a CV input to control the cutoff frequency, ask Sedusa for this info).
ALso PAiA have a MIDI/CV converter that comes in a kit and features several modes of work with lot of outputs for CV control (about$100).

Oooh.... If it's in perfect working order and everything, GET IT.... If one came my way for that much, I'd have to own two hehe.... I wasn't talking about the little CV thing, it was some other company... I'll look in the archives and dig out the URL... Pay no attention to self_osc, he seems to like abridging my answers....   jes kidding...

Abridging's kinda like editing, but it generally means making shorter... I just used the wrong word, really... I was just giving you a hard time for this and the Emax thread... Taking the piss, brotha!

what is the cheapest midi->cv converter you'd reccomend? kenton's shit is super expensive. i only need to control 1 or 2 synths with it...

does anybody know if those Paia CV convertors are reliable. I seemto remember someone mentioning that they suck but they're also damn cheap. Second opinions?

I looked at the paia converters and they're these goddamn do it yourself things where you have to buy the 1/4" jacks separate. for god's sake why do they do this?

Maybe JKJ Electronics?

http://www.tiac.net/users/jkjelec

Doesn't seem these have the same features as the Kenton, but...

There's also Encore, but I think they're more expensive:

I have the Kenton Pro-2000, and I like it just fine. It runs
my Mini and my MG-1.

Good luck!

the encore expressionist is a fine machine, and is cheaper (i believe) than
the feature-comparable kenton pro4.
the encore's firmware is easily upgraded via midi; don't know about kenton.
encore's tony karavidas is easily accessible re: new concepts for upgrades.
(and he's a nice guy and a brand new daddy!)

and for serge owners: sound transform systems has a mod involving installing
the serge power ground directly to the expressionist; it's got something to
do with grounding the serge to the digitalia in the
expressionist. perhaps it eliminates most if not all potential noise/stepping
problems associated with midi/cv machines. check sts for details.

i upgraded from pro2 to expressionist and have been, obviously, quite pleased.
highly recommended...about $600 for 8 channels cv/gate, 3 global lfo's, poly
cv mode (which i haven't used yet), etc.
