I'm a novice so forgive the question if totally obvious:

I use Cakewalk with an Ensoniq PCI soundcard ( and no keyboard ).
What I'd like to do is get more instruments than just my general
MIDI patches so that I can use them in the piano roll. I'm
thinking I should be able to assign new generic patches in order to import
a new set of instruments. Is this possible? I notice Cakewalk allows you
to import .INS files... does anyone know where to find .INS files, or how
to create them?

I am not 100% on this but I'm sure INS files are descriptions of Keyboards, drums etc. that you can load into Cakewalk so that the program knows where all the machines presets are and are not actually sounds themselves. You would need to hook you computer up
external sources for more sounds other than you sound card. Anyway, why don't you download HAMMERHEAD, GOLDWAVE and MULTIQUENCE so that you can compose with wave files? look at the
software pages at this site.
