Daniel Schouten TBS-303

Here's another 303 clone module...and this one is rated as one of the best... soundwise it's spot on, the only difference is the sequencer of the original 303 functions in a different way which obviously for the purists adds a subtley different feel to the original, but soundwise this one is a top runner and the price is really amazing for the sound & quality of the unit.

These units are the brainchild of Daniel Schouten, who lives in the Netherlands.... He designed and builds these units in his spare time, so units are to order only...there is no dealer or anything....

Daniel gets the sound by keeping the components as near to the original as possible....and uses a proper 18 dB filter....The unit as you can see is constructed into a very solid table-top mounting unit, and can be programmed via midi, with accents being added with Velocity data, and Slides by Modulation controller......

This unit does not send or recieve data for the control knobs...Daniel reckons that is to achieve the most authentic sound..... Here's a quote:

"Why is it 'the best 303-clone' around, you think?.....Well, the TBS-303 has the original circuit topology, the original PCB layout and last but not least the same component-types as used in the Roland TB303*. In most other 303-clones, the circuit topology has been changed, for example to provide a MIDI controlled filtersection. An other typical TB303 circuit modification, is changing the discrete electronics into IC-based electronics. Especially the filtersection is very sensitive to these changes.

So there you go...... Purists will always say that adding midi to a 303 changes the sound....so This unit seems to have gone for the best medium......Have a listen to the RA files...It sounds cool..!!

For information about availability and ordering, go to Daniels TBS 303 pages, and email him there.....

any of you losers out there cryin' 'bout the lack of a stupid

internal sequencer should shut the hell up. face it

this is as good as it gets. i think even better than an actual

re-issuing of the original.midi frees you up to limitless

creativity with changing lines and tossing in accents and slides

on the fly with the mk-2 vrs. this thing is the shit. i just hope that when he goes

to production he (daniel) doesnt mean just getting a few friends to help.

otherwise we'll all be waiting a long time. now

about a job to get those two i want.......

can't get over those mp3 samples he has at the main site.. wanted to get one for a long time, but i hear rumors he's never gonna build 'em any more?! maybe someone will eventually release the plans and his sources for parts..! also pretty disappointed to hear there is now MID filtering control..!... seems awfuly simple to me that one could make MIDI sensitive knobs and visa0versa.. not intergating to the internal workings of the machine.. just link enough to say attain a preset position. .maybe do a sweep and then return to 0.. oh well.. messge me if you'd like to chat about this topic cause i might try to build something fairly soon if i can.. or if you wanna talk anbout the Korg EA-1 - i can't seem to find any pages made by users yet.. jus corporate info.. Enough of the TB-303 or it's clones already. It's a very tiered sound. If I heard some New school acid music ( using a 303 or clone ) that was worth
while I might be interested, but there hasn't been anything worth while acid music ( using a TB-303 or a clone ) produced for many, many, many
years. Please prove me wrong , or review a synth that has more capabilities......... All I can say that the TB-303 is good for is a penis extension.....Fuck even the MC 202 is better.

And you call yorself a professional? There are numerous artists that still make great tracks using that sound...look it up! What you're saying is absurd, what if I said "That 909/808 kick-drum , start using something else ,it's getting boring now...."it's HOW you use it ,and with what else!

not familiar with the TBS but the TB gets below mark...

What artist ???---please inform me. Who Dickey Hawtin(Please)??? The last good 303 track that I heard produced was by Ian Pooly in 94....... No shit that is
amazing news..."It's how you use it"..... Yes the 303 sounds neat fucking O,,,, and it sounded neat fucking O back in the day. I have heard more 303's than I
have ever wanted to in the past 10 years. The problem with techno is *genres*. Ever sense I have seen genres come into place I watched the music I have loved
turn pure crap. Advanced shopping music. You know I used a TB 303, 808 and 101 and that was it, when I first started writing traxz ( 9 years ago ). I do think
I know what they sound like. You do not have to insult me for an opinion. For all you know I could be the next person booking you for a gig or giving you a
record contract. The last time I have seen the 303 used in a creative was by ESP Woody Mcbride , But that a different story. Once again PROVE ME WRONG.

Im actually surprised, this machine gave
me that feeling like the tb does, well done. I know people hate the 303, and are against them cuz theyr overused, but thats stupid, just another case of the word trendy being overused. Synths are overused as well, i dont know how many people buy a nord lead cuz theyr used alot. Denying the 303 as a part of music history is like denying Kraftwerk for catapulting electronic to where it is today. Thank you so very much Mr. Shouten for making it possible for us who dont have 1000$ to be able to use this killer sound. Out of all the clones this one sounds the best, better than Darkstar which is a joke, and a 303 clone as well no matter what people say.
Ill definately being ordering one of these growling beasts. Oh and to the above who thinks the 303 isnt used good anymore, not just trance and dance projects use the 303, industrial bands have used the 303 as well. And use it very well i might add, even using a little diferently than people are used to.

I dont think the darkstar is a joke becuase it cant do 303. What i was saying that in essence the darkstar is a nother 303 clone. But aside from what else it can do it isnt a very good machine. Very thin sounding. It sure does look cool. But nothing exciting about it. Im sure many people here can agree with me its about time some companies start making some new stuff. Sure they now have the alesis andromeda and and some other cool modules. But frankly im tired of clones. Or synths being so close to clones. Somthing new would be cool. Somthing thats not trying to be close to a 303, 909, or old analog synth. How about something new and exciting. Something that brings back the feeling you had when you first played a analog synth that like no other.

As for the darkstar, ive played with it, and i wasnt impressed. Im sure some people will love it, the price is good, but what comes into the situation is personal taste. In my "opinion" if you want a cool monosynth bassline machine the doepfer ms-404, or waldorf pulse, or even check out the Hellfire module or prosynth. for Red sounds forst synth i am lookign forward to what theyr gonna come up with next.
