I've been playing with it for a while and I think it's really solid. Anybody tried gigging with it, or doing ad-lib jam stuff? The more I play with it, the more I realise that a whole set could easily be run off a laptop.

Cool.

BEST software around for live performance, bar none. Been using it awhile now, and it is AMAZING>

Very intuitive interface, NEVER CRACKLES or misses a beat, not to mention great effects.

I couldn't give any other software a higher recommendation for live use.

It's more reliable than my hardware.

I have a buddy who uses it. I've seen it work flawlessly, and I've seen it almost kill my buddy's iBook2. I dunno. It seems really neat for live manipulation od sound in the digital realm, but it also seems like mouse-rock. My buddy uses an 828 and a pc1600x with it, and it's neat, but I still love my hardware. Personal preference. He sets up in five minutes, and breaks down as fast. I take four to five times that wth my hardware. There are advantages to each. Some really love the convenience and cleanliness of all digital sound. I don't but that's me. It's a cool tool. I'd certainly use it for some gigs if I was so equipped.

man, i wonder what gives. i love the program for a
lot of reasons, but one thing that is really annoying
is how it won't lock some loops in tight. unless i
would go through before a a liveset and set
everything up (all of the hitpoints in the loops) so
they were all on beat and solid, i wouldn't feel
comfortable using it live. is it just the alogrthym?
they need to get it more stable like acid or
something.

anyone else found that to be the case?

not at all...
You can set the warp markers all over the place in ableton, and make it as rigid or loose as you want...
Good for some wacky sounding effects as well.

right, i know, but that's what i mean. you don't
want to have to set warp markers during a live
set.

So you are talking about just throwing in random loops in a live set?

Bigger balls than me, my man.

okay, i haven't played with live in awhile so for the
past few days i've been working with it and learning
the ins and outs.

the problem that i was having was using loops that
weren't cut perfectly and that i didn't know the
original bpm of. that said, I F*CKING LOVE THIS
PROGRAM!

as long as you do set up warp markers where
needed it runs perfectly. or if you have better
loops than what i was using   it's crazy how many
ideas i was coming up with. even doing jam
sessions and making tracks on the fly for 20
minutes at a time. man, it got me thinking about
doing live sets made competely spontaniously with
only preselected loops. it would take some thought,
but i think it would be fun as hell. maybe setup
some effect sends beforehand and then just jam.

and assigning midi triggers or qwerty triggers is so
simple. this program rocks. really, everyone should
at least get the demo and play with it for a bit. it's
really cool.

apparently, from the ableton forums, its a toned down version.

Either way, get your hands on it.
These people deserve your money.

am i the only one who thinks watching some guy on a laptop is boring? i've not seen anyone actually rock a dancefloor with a laptop. and ableton doesn't do midi either right?

i have seen some people use it. it does alot of great things, but i think watching someone dork out on his laptop is boring. they could just be playing a dat for all anyone knows.

just my 2 cents.

well, i wouldn't just use a laptop. definitely a
keyboard, fx boxes, a drum pad, a filterbank
and maybe a kaos pad. sure, i think just a
laptop would be pretty boring.

1) Ableton does midi, as far as being controllable by it, so you can use a keyboard/knobs to do all your tweaking (my style)

2) Actually, I saw a guy rip shit up hardcore style on a laptop and ableton... Eight Frozen Modules, from Austin, relocated to LA... hard, dirty Squarepusher shit...amazing.... you just gotta have some energy.

it does rewire too - actualy they are doing a deal on it (m-audio.co.uk) they are flogging deals on ableton + reason + a choice of either of their controller keyboards in two different rpiced packages (determined by choice of keyboard)

yes, you can sculpt with a paint brush.

sure, it's better to make your setup work rather than complain what it can't do...BUT it's also good to have an idea of what you want to do and then find a way to do it.

for example, i want to run my hardware live instead of just using softsynths and such. i want to use my midi gear 'cause i think it sounds better.

there is always a point where you have to accept the limitations of your setup. i'm using an mmt8 for god sakes...it's arciac and extreemly limited...but it does run my midi gear and that's what i want.

i also do find twiddling a laptop to be a bit boring to watch. if i could use my midi gear and do it effectivly though, i think i would seriosly consider using a laptop. that would add a demention to the performance that i think is lacking from just laptop with fader performers.

don't get me wrong, i'm not opposed to new technology. i've got a g4 and all that in the studio...but for the live performance...i just have a different idea in mind.

Thats fine.
I use it with external gear controlling it, along with live guitar, a vocalist, outboard fx, and a couple of hardware synths.

*shrug*

Not for everyone. You aren't going to find a midi sequencer, in a mac or a pc at least, thats as stable though... at least at this point in time.

Ableton Live is f-ing nice; Someone kept talking about doing a live set with just a dissorted palette or loops - definitely doable. The native plugins actually sound decent and are light on the CPU. When I throw Reason or Nuendo loops at it, they always lock. I can't wait to take it live.

The sound through its algorithims is something like MP3 quality, though. Big drawback. On an average (loud and lo-fi) club system you probably wouldn't know; hi-fi purists would be sick.

I wanna Live battle someone!

years eve that i'm going to use live for and
hopefully i'll have the new version down by then.

I wanted a proper demo at the recent trade show, but they demonstrator didnt seem to know the product and I gave up waiting for him to get it together. Shame.
