I'm looking to add a h/w compressor to my studio. I have some good s/w ones, but I miss the ability to compress things realtime while I'm composing and arranging. I have a nice unit (Focusrite Tonefactory) that has some simple adjustments for recording acoustic things (voice included), but I'd like to add something that has all the features. I'm looking for a unit that has the following features...

1. Full control of Attack, Release, Threshold, Ratio

2. LOW LOW LOW noise

3. Dual Mono (for compressing a bassline and a kick drum simultaneously

4. $500 or less (US)

The units that have been recommended to me are the Presonus ACP-22 (I had a bluemax that was quite good and I am leaning towards them for product loyalty), a dbx160, the HHB Fat Man, a Summit box and a Joe Meek. Because I have a good mic-pre in the Tonefactory, this unit will only be used for instruments, and again, a LOW noise floor is very important. Thanks.

How about a Focusrite Compounder? They have a HUGE function that is designed to be used on kicks and bass. It also sounds transparent and PHATT!

thats what i was thinking. btw, dbx160 although a kick ass compressor is only mono.

huge, eh? man, why dont more companies dont do that. imagine having buttons labeled "lovely", "sweet", "brathtaking" etc and they all worked as intended...

The Compounder looks interesting, but appears to be mono. Is that not the case?

Shit, that looks nice then. Looks exactly like my Tonefactory. Same company? ;-)

Any opinions on the others I mentioned? I believe that there is a version of the dbx160 that is dual mono...the 1066 is dual mono.

I've always been under the impression that the dbx stuff was...cheap. In price and quality. Is that not true?

noooo! they do make budget boxes, but some of their stuff is pure classic. like 160 for example (dunno if 1066 has got anything to do with it though). its really world class for smooth transparent compression, super nice sound (mebbe not what you are looking for?). dbx also makes units for broadcast application etc etc... also some nice vintage boxes which are now sought after by some...

hey! how about RNC? for 500$ you coul get two and use them as two mono or two stereo comps. think about it.

but still, compounder is supposed to be really good too, and from a name company, and also it matches your tonefactory (wish i had one) etc etc... ;)

is it the plain 160 that is so dope? thought it was the 160x?

anyway...$225 or so..

and the 1066 has absolutely NOTHING to do with the "good" DBX stuff except the name

Darin..they make one called the 166A..Ive used it and its cool

you mentioned the HHB fatman..>NOT dual mono. The radius 30 is tho..and those are ok.

another kinda cool one is the bellari RP582 (282?)...2u rack, dual mono tube compressor

definitely not high end..but for $500 not much is gonna be...

RNCs are damn solid too, and theres the JoeMeek SC2.2...

if you SCORED you could find a joe meek SC2..the original..but theyre stereo, too...

Those RNC's look pretty cool. 2 for $400 ain't so bad either. Order out of state and no sales tax. :-) Love it. Interesting, nothing in the New England area. That sucks. Anyhow - anyone using these things? How fast an attack is a good fast attack? (in relation to the ability of unit to detect an incoming signal and act on it) The documentation says .2 miliseconds. Is that fast in compression terms?

a nice 160 is still going to be expensive. the 162 was the stereo version. 1000-1500. 160's go for 600-800. RNC get high props. Also don't over look the joe meek.

yeah, everyone who tried an RNC rates them highly. .2ms is extremely fast in compression terms, i wonder how that translates to real world usage though. anyway, should be fast enough. many "classic" compressors arent that fast anyway.

The Joe Meek looks a little expensive though. The 160 is probably out of my pricerange as well. I'll take a closer look at those RNC's. I've heard lots of good things about them as well.

Well...if you talk to the right people you could probably pick up two RNC's for just over $300 plus shipping. That's four channels of compression, and I do love mine.

I've never used the RNC's more than twice, but from memory and what I've heard, they're no so good for 'character' compression. That is, if you want to alter the waveform of what you're compressing with slower attack and release (for punch) or anything else that relies on good sounding 'ballistics' the RNC's just won't pump like you want them to. They're most used as buss compressors because they're so transparent.

But I don't own one, so get a second opinion (preferably your own... go to guitar center with a CD of full tunes and individual tracks of stuff you'd normally compress and set up a little tester!)

I may have to take a trip to Foxboro, MA - they distribute them but I don't know if they're in stock. Not sure how you try out a compressor, though...

Psy - your experience is that they probably won't achieve the sound I am looking for. Is that correct? From what I've heard from Pongoid's music, a thumping compressor is very important. Seems like you guys have had a VASTLY different experience with the same box.

pongoids stuff never sounded very compressed to me, quite the contrary actually. so i wouldnt exclude psy´s opinion on this one. i´d say pongoids thump comes from programming and the soundsource.

compounder still sounds like your best bet. from smooth to thumping, its supposed to deliver the goods.

you want grit and aggressive style sound right?

compounder is damn cool. DBX 166x

better yet..honestly darin...buy a Universal Audio UAD-1. for $600 you get 1176LN, LA2A, and the CS-1 compression isnt exactly something to turn your nose up

PLUS Pultec EQ, RealVerb Pro (me gusto mucho altho others bitch about it) and MORE...all on its own DSP...

honestly...get that thing and you wont look back

oh shit...youre running sonar tho. dunno bout that...

anyone? DX wrapper to use UAD-1?

Not discounting Psy's experience at all, simply pointing out that there was a difference of opinion (possibly) on something fundamental. Probably shouldn't speak for Ape, as he does a good job of that on his own. What's up Ape?

You can get some ok pump by backing off of the attack and release , and setting the threshold lower, then raising the gain, and ratio on the RNC. I'm getting mine to pump more and more, but yes it is pretty tranparent for the most part, and I kind of prefer that. For software, you want pump? Try the Timeworx CompressorX. Hardware hard pumper? How much you want to spend? I've seen a lot of kids in Europe using the Drawmer, but I'm not into that completely squashed out to hell crap, where all you hear is a distorted kick, then it lets off, and the rest of the sounds rush in for a fraction of a second, only to be squashed out of the mix again by the kick. No real single solution. I'm happy with my sound, but it's not your sound. What are you trying to achieve, and what are you trying to compress?

As I said, I'm looking for some compression on kicks and bass. Something to round out the bass some, with a little pumping. I'm not a squasher either, but some subtle compression is what I am after. The type of compression on my Tonefactory is nice, but I would like more control. The degrees to which you alluded to )"that completely squashed out to hell crap, where all you hear is a distorted kick, then it lets off, and the rest of the sounds rush in for a fraction of a second, only to be squashed out of the mix again by the kick") Ape, are a little more than I am looking for (I know the sound). I think something fairly transparent is more appropriate for the type of music I do.

okay - I'm looking at the compounder as well. A little hard to come by, however. I see one on Ebay, and nowhere else. They got good reviews as well - kind of difficult to choose between a couple of RNC's and a Compounder, though.

no, its not. not if you want aggressive "soundy" compression

sure there are others, but if youve narrowed it down then its the compounder for sound

tell you what holmes. play your cards right and you could get BOTH for that $500 you wanted to spend.

I've been after a compunder for a while Z. I heard one about two years back that a guy (Mindfield) was running on his live PA kit. Been trying to get one off and on ever since... I either can't find one when I do have cash, or I find 'em and don't have the spare dosh to snag it.... BAH... One day...

But yeah, I do like the "sound" of the compounder, although it do seem to be fairly transparent when you wants.

i have been seriously considering selling my waves gold bundle... would let it go for a good price if you are interested...

i spoke to waves and they will transfer license for a fee (i think it was $100 or something?)

theres nothing wrong with the plugs, i only ever use the renisance stuff but lately i sequence on the rs7k not sonar so it doesnt matter.

also i am getting an itch for some outboard mastering gear (i also use the waves stuff for mastering)

the ren comp is very nice :-)

email me if you are interested formant@bellsouth.net

just buy the waves plugs to clear your conscience and then use the cracks to avoid the copy protection

and for the record, yet again, the UAD-1 can be used with Sonar with the FXPansion wrapper (possibly others).

I've been doing some reading on the UAD1 deal and it looks like it has some latency and stability problems. I'm not sure that I want to add that to my list of issues. Plus, anything involving computer hardware has been a real pain in the ass for me. So, I think I'm gonna steer clear of that.

I also looked into the Waves stuff, and its simply too rich for me. I DEFINITELY can't afford that stuff. SF is still a possibility as I have used it and liked it - a heck of a lot more than Wavelab, anyways.

Once I get my RM1X sold, and the holidays are over, I'm gonna need to make a decision. I'm still leaning in the h/w compressor direction, but I could bypass the whole thing and get a used keyboard for fun. :-) I can be a gear-whore once, right?

Yeah man, I was digging through Harmony Central classifieds and saw a bunch around $450. Same with the Prophecy. Or, I could go completely analog. Anyone know of a good $500 analog? ;-)

Mindspawn, you're a trip. ;-)

Before I got the Darkstar, I considered the technosaurus, and since considering a "frivolous" buy here, I have looked into the Juno 106 and SH101. I was talking to my wife about this today, and she says analog. Problem is that it's tough to find one to play.

Well analogs ain't for the meek. A lot of 'em don't have any way of "saving" a patch. You dial it in, use it, turn it off, and lose it.... That said, they do things a digital synth can't/won't due to active electronics, changes in power supply/temperature, etc. Also, some of the analogs are more stable than others. The Junos are fairly straight forward, most can save patches, and in cases like the Juno 106, you get built in MIDI.

If you're a patient sort, dunna worry too much about not being able to "play" one to test. As long as the machine is in good working order methinks you'll dig it. Pretty much everyone I've ever seen turned onto analogs really prefer them over digital, present company included. Mind you, for any kind of live play, I still favor the digital side of things, solely cos you have a lot less headaches when dragging them to shows and so on...

I've got a couple analogs over here at the studio if you want to see what they're like to muck about with... Did I introduce you to the Chroma Polaris the last time you were here?

Influx - yeah, things happened, change of heart. I'm not really this unstable. Ask my shrink... ;-)

Mindspawn - I don't think I saw your Polaris the last time I was over. I was mucking about with your Indigo. I'm not too worried about the ability to save - I haven't saved a THING on my Darkstar, and I kind of like it that way. Just dial up what you need. Fun. :-) I figure I have lots of digital in my place, and an analog would be a really addition. Plus, depending on what I spend, I may have enough to get a compressor (to stay on topic here.)

Give me a buzz when you're back in town. My in-laws will be around for the weekend after Christmas, and I'll DYING to get out of the house for an evening. How's your trip going, btw? Visiting your fam?

Well, I'm really leaning in the direction of the Microcon II. I'll check out the evolver as well.
