Ah yes the bare minimums long live the Captian ! A nice clean studio a bottle of rum and a bag -O-inspiration.

You must have just set that up my studio never looks that clean.

All these studio pics are making me jealous, I'm buying a house so all my stuff is packed up I havn't done any chewns in a couple of months except play around with project 5 on my lappy =(

I can't wait to move in I have a whole room all for my studio for the first time ever. I have been cramed into basements, offices, closets,(yes I did eventually come out of the closet) and my bedroom for the past 6 years. I'll be posting some pics of the room soon for everyones expert advise for sound treatment montior placement and all that fun stuff.

Sh*t, nice pictures! took some time loading with 56k but it was worth it.

BS got some powerful stuff, and the Nova looks really cute next to the keyboard ; ).

Jock's studio is filled with bad-ass machines. Even the Akai s5000/6000 looks mean - like it wants to eat something with the big display ;).

Xoxos studio pic makes me drool. REALLY NICE light - damn inspiring!!! And the place seems very very cozy in general : ).

I really like those drapes xoxos, where did you get them? They look nice + they provide some basic sound proofing.

I just hope everyone's got comprehensive contents insurance.

Maarten, yep its a Synthex. I only bought it coz of the JMJ laser harp thingy. I was pleasantly suprised with what you can get out of it though. Its a bit quirky sometimes when your pumping shed loads of midi through it, it tends to get its knickers in a twist.

I'm gonna change my curtains, fed up with people taking the piss out of them *sobbing*

Aw hydro, couldn't you plug a few empty cables into that mixer there? It looks lonely...

and get those monitors on their sides or lower so you can hear the tweeters.

and broken silence, you can really play the keys reaching over yer computer keys that way?

Hey psy don't you remember the last time I posted pics of my studio? Well, I don't even remember so it was probably a while but anyways I explained that the tweaters pivot, so I can aim them down wear I sit. Its actually a pretty cool feature that I don't see in alot of monitors. You can't really tell in that pic though....Anyways it looks like I get the least amount of gear award.

sorry about the file-size. i tried reducing it further but couldn't get it lower than this.
remove it if necessary.

my computer sits to the left of my mixer. my computer-station is taller than most.
it is as high as my mixer and can be stood up at. my space is configured in a big U-shape.

to the left of computer that is my food and drink-station...and where i house my dual r-8s and all my cds and stuff.. and hopefully, eventually, a nord and a......?

the room is a converted garage which also doubles as my laundry-room. the machines are to be moved into the room i built next to this space but as yet...that hasn't been done. so yes....those ARE my nighties d. wanna closer look?

actually...the picture of my playpen looks harsher and more serious than it is.
the lights are usually rather dim......and quaint.....and always some classical quietly going on~ when i'm not rolling my own or TRYING to listen to new dt tracks.

most of my fiddling about is in the semi-dark......low-light.
the computer screen is easier to see>>>> it's more relaxing
and
i use enough watts as it is.... just keeping this gear fed.

and for what it's worth....in netscape....i now have no text directing me to enter my id.....website file attach or anything. just a white box and a blue box.

i'm just guessing this blue box is where i should type since i'm seeing my words appear here.
well...here goes>

The Neptune is quite under-rated imo.. pretty basic yes but it has a lovely sound and the LFO on it is great. The knobs suck though, feel really cheap. erm, what reflections? The camera flash or you mean sound? angle of output passes my screen if that's what you mean..
And no noise from the MW.. I get lots of noise from my tb-303 & pearl syncussion tho.. ol' garbage ;)
hehe, sharp quessy- nah doesn't fall off ... I guess the cables don't give it enough strech the way it's connected

Frankly it boggles my mind why 'frat boys' would not be considered the kind of people that would be in something 'creative' or 'underground' (or whatever elitist prerequisite you can think of) such as electronic music. (at least that's what I taste from that last remark, forgive me my mistake if I was wrong)

I was in both an American fraternity (had a great time with those boys) and I joined a similar student society here in the Netherlands: the kind of society where only suits and ties are allowed inside of the building...shoud I sell my sampler, my novations and my machinedrum now?

oh come on dude, dont be so fcking sensitive.

the "type" that "usually" is attracted to fraternity life isnt the "type" that usually ends up as an electronic musician.

in the states...MOST frats are just about partying, testosterone fueled "jock" behavior

OF COURSE there are differences, but individualism is not something usually fostered in a fraternity or sorority environment.

nothing I said even remotely resembled "sell your stuff youre not worthy" at all!

As I said, my experience was not stereotypical. You need to remember that there are thousands of fraternitys out there, with hundreds of thousands of INDIVIDUALS in them. Yes, there are plenty of examples of the "jock" fraternity, there are the "prep-y" fraternities, there are even the "nerdy" fraternities. There are also fraternities filled with guys of varying backgrounds who develop a friendship and bond that is bigger than ourselves. It's a group of people who have similar interests and goals, and are looking to be a part of an organization that actually means something to them. For some people, this organization is about womanizing and getting drunk/stoned, but for others, it helps to develop character and skills. I chaired NUMEROUS committee's, and held executive offices. I wasn't drunk all the time. And I wasn't chasing birds all the time.

Fraternities vary from one campus to another. At Syracuse we were your "average Joe's" who enjoyed the benefits of being in the Greek system. It would take too long to explain what they are, but there ARE benefits. We drank together, went to bars together, we played video games, we had study groups, we organized, participated and supported MANY various philanthropic endevours - more so than 90% of the non-Greek student body. I had MANY "friends" outside of my fraternity, more friends than brothers, but my brothers are the ones I still hang out with and communicate with.

It's always difficult to explain to people what my experience was like. If you weren't part of it, and you don't want to accept that there are GOOD things about being in a fraternity, you will never understand. You need to get all of your prejudices out of your head, because for every jackass fraternity "type", there is one guy who doesn't fit that mold. You need to get off your prejudicial high-horses. It's funny how people take different routes to get to the same place.

"...seriously, bas...my comments werent meant as an insult...not toward you (had no idea) or Darin..."

No offense taken.

"... but...my experience with frats is what it is, and isnt all that uncommon. Yours and or DZ's might have been different..."

Seriously: some of the best experiences I had were in the (outwardly) most conservative of conservative (or shallow) of environments. I've been in a Greek fraternatiy (stateside) and it has introduced me to some of the nicest people around the states: varying from Redbeck Hill Billy type blokes from around the Ozarks (how do you spell that?), meeting the most Yiddish of Yiddish philosopher dude from Chicago to springbreak beer-bung-keg-fest-o-mania in Florida.

Here in the Netherlands I joined a 'corps' which is by far the most conservative and elitist thing one can do (from the outside) full with white, upperclass, horseback riding, golfplaying 'ivyleagers'....never had a better time as with some of these blokes. Hell, we're still doing so much stuff together it boggles the mind. (don't go to mexico next april...we're there)...I've participated in putting together some of the hottest dance festivals with these bloke: yup, normaly they wear shirt and tie (you can't get into the 'clubhouse' without one) but this is partying with a capital P. And I am talking about borrowing starfighter jetplanes from the airforce, using old trolley/trams and airplanes as 'bridges' between buildings, totally rebuilding the old university library into a mega big party centre etc. All done by ourselfves, no contractors involved...

Wheniver I told people I was a member they were all like 'huh, but you are sooooo unlike them.....' (as if: I *was* them)

You see, there's is people behind those greek letters not droids. Just thought I'd let you know.

But again, no offense taken, just wanted to set a potential prejudice straight...I know exactly what you mean by annoying, letter wearing bud light gulping morrons....

Darin

you come off like a very conservative 'preppy'...meant in a light way of course

that is ALL I meant about the frat thing, and "they" dont tend to be into "techno" now do they.

dunno...frats = groups, with rules and adherances. Not my thing, never will be...and the ones I had experience with you just bought your friends...paid into this group...bout as shallow as it gets.

Craig... How's your bass response with those monitors right in front of the window like that? I've heard that's a horrible way to do it... but I have a friend doing much the same thing and he says, "no harm done!"

shrug...

oh, and... how on EARTH do you do dark, angry music in a room with your MOM's curtains? (Sorry, I couldn't help it!)

The baseboard (and all the woodowrk in my place) is oak. The lighting makes it look darker than it is.

Bass response.. Well, it's not that great in that room, but it was no better when the monitors were against the left wall or in the corner, and the stereo image was fucked up that way.

The drums are rigged up like that because I don't have room for them set up right, and I can't play them like a real kit anyways. I do kick drum with my right hand on the floor tom, and snare with the left, then add percussion and cymbals later. I really just use 'em to rough out ideas. I bought them when I had a drummer, but I like using them now that he's gone.

The Nord Lead is autographed by KMFDM and is not for sale. Ever.

You'll get to hear some music soon I hope. I'm looking for a voice right now, but there's like 5 songs demoed out pretty well now. Shouldn't be long.

-Craig

Oh, duh..

It's a Yamaha DTX Express kit. I think I paid $400 for it, and it was pretty much like new except for the thick layer of dust they collected in their previous home. The kick trigger did die, but the replacement pintech is a much better trigger anyways.

I'm halfway through painting my studio BRIGHT GREEN. I ran out of paint last night and have to get some more today. I was getting fed up with white and find the green energizing and restful at the same time.

I had to bring my red porn light into work because when I turned it on, the green walls in the studio went black. Neat, but creepy.

I'll post pics when it's all done.

White walls might be uninspiring, but they keep the room bright, so it's easy to see the markings on the knobs of the equipment. I have this painting on the wall for inspiration:

When I move, I think I will probably do the walls in a neutral shade of tan or reddish brown.

Nope. I got to meet KMFDM about 6 weeks ago, and I got it autographed then. KMFDM are big Nord users and the Nord is one piece I didn't ever expect to be selling, so I thought it'd be cool to have it signed..

I'm not one of those people who gets off on buying/selling autographed shit, but it's inspiring to see the autographs while I'm working.

I knew I was meeting the band before - they said bring whatever you want signed so I did   At one point, the production company my old singer worked for was bidding for the show, and if he'd have got it, we would've played. And that really would've made my day.

My shit-eating grin was because of a joke someone told. I'm not that big a douchebag - really, I have other pictures where I look normal

I'm surprised more of you lot aren't into their music. Amazon.com has some samples from some of their records. Try "Symbols" and "Adios" for stuff you guys would probably be into.

"Adios" is freaking brilliant that's the last album I bought of theirs. I've heard some of the mdfmk but haven't taken the time to pick up the album and give it a proper listen. Adios was the album that was released on the day of the Columbine shootings wasn't it ? There was all that noise about the shooters being big kmfdm fans and that they were inspired by their lyrics to kill people. I remember watching a local news show put up an example of their "violent" lyrics I don't remember the exact lyrics but I do remember laughing my ass of because they quoted lyrics from " A Drug Against War" out of context they did sound pretty brutal but it's an anti war song dripping with sarcasm. Sometimes people really have a hard time coming to grips with humor sarcasm and irony in music. That's one of the things I like about kmfdm their kinda tongue in cheek attitude, they are the only metal/industrial band that I have ever heard that constantly refers to themselves in the third person in their tracks. That's usually a rap thing init.

It's German for "No pity for the majority". Their English singer couldn't pronounce the German words so they dhortened to KMFDM.

Adios is an awesome album for people who are fans of dance music. It's a very dancy record for them. The MDFMK record is really good too. Attak has some good electronic grooves in it, but it starts moving back towards metal. WWIII is kind of link NIN's "Broken" in the sense that the record was intended to be a "band" record, where the "full band" feel of the live band influences the record heavily. It's not as good as the others I don't think. If you're a metalhead at heart check out Nihl and Xtort. Fucking great guitar playing on those records.

KMFDM didnt really cross my path that often, mebbe the only reason why i wasnt into them at the time. liked meat beat manifesto and utah saints, tho thats a different style i guess...

why dont we talk more about music on this website? its all "lounge lounge lounge" nowadays!

I don't mind Meat Beat. There's some stuff of theirs I like. I came into electronic music from metal through industrial. I saw NIN at Woodstock '94 and that changed everything for me. Got into KMFDM and Front Line Assembly from there, and then started getting into some dance music mostly through the recommendations of the people here.

I still stick to more guitar driven stuff though, like God Lives Underwater and the like.

Influx - I recommend:

Adios
Symbols
MDFMK (the full-length, not the single, probably listed under the band name MDFMK)
Nihil
Xtort

Basically, start at MDFMK or Adios and work your way backwards   Avoid records older than Money like the plague

Nihil is probably their "best" CD, but if you're not a big fan of guitar shit then it might not be for you. Ditto with Xtort.

Don't forget God Lives Underwater......... 'Empty' is tight.
I forgot about a lot of these albums I had em all on tape but gave all my tapes to my lil brother when I got a cd player in my car years ago. I wonder if it is still a copyright violation to download tracks of an album you already bought once but lost ??? or In the case of god lives underwater bought twice ? I had a couple of copys of Nihil too.

God Lives Underwater's "Life in the So-Called Space Age" is a fucking masterpiece. It's such a nice, complex, beautiful sounding record compared to the lo-fi sound of empty. Some great tunes on that record too though.

I saw God Lives Underwater open for KMFDM back in about '95.. I met GLU's singer wandering in the parking lot, but he was so whacked on drugs he didn't know he even had played that night. Sad... The band lost its momentum after he went to rehab, and are now disbanded. I've got a copy of an unreleased followup to "Space Age" called "Up off the Floor" which is also a really good record.

I can hook you up with mp3s if you want. I don't think it'd be illegal to give away copies of a record that never got released :D

I fucking hate Bile. They opened the last round of KMFDM tours and they sucked. Funny enough, but Bile shows up in Buffalo at least every year, and it's the low rent national act all the little kiddies in lame industrial bands want to get the opening slot for. They usually draw about 15 people at the show - 5 for Bile, and 10 for the opening band

Fear Factory is better   And of course there's Ministry.

Ever listened to any Pigface or other Martin Atkins projects? The Damage Manual stuff he put out was pretty good.

I really don't get that argument. Listen to "Witness" off Adios, "Light" off of Angst, "Vogue" off of Money, and "Control?" off of MDFMK and tell me those songs sound anything like each other. If you've only heard "Light" and "Junke Joint Jezebel", sure those songs sound like one another, but they don't sound anything like say "DIY" or "Superhero".

Whoa. I have xtort on vinyl somewhere... hehehe

Never see craig around so much as this thread! A few industrial notes and he's out of the woodwork!

I did Acid with Pigface in 1991. When Skinny Puppy and Trent Reznor were a part of it!!

"black man, white man, rip the system!"

too much fun those days... before the whole thing took itself too seriously. Craig, you might not appreciate this, but i sincerely believe that Trent Reznor fucked up industrial music. (And don't any of you start with the whole "Those bands aren't industrial" thing, we all know Neubauten were the ONLY industrial act to ever earn a dime!)

I think that Nails commercialization and subsequent success did derail the progression of the genre in a sense. It's like opening that door shed light on all the real vampires and they all burst into flames

Much of what passes as "Industrial" these days is either more synthpop (VNV Nation et al) or has become hybridized with metal, a la Bile (and even KMFDM). You can see that a lot of the players started moving in other directions around the same time. I don't know if that's just a coincidence or not. Around that time Bill Leeb began concentrating on Delerium and neglecting Front Line, and Front Line's later stuff is definately not the raw, edgy straight industrial of old. Still very good records though. KMFDM got much more "metal band" for a while, then went dancy, then metal again..

I'm probably the wrong person to be expounding on this because I actually LIKE a lot of what the big players have done after NIN/the "great industrial collapse"

And you don't see me around here as often because we don't have many musical conversations like this any more.

we are now... hehehe

Ok... Rarely if ever did any of the synth industrial folks sing about their broken hearts. It's what made the genre deep (IMO) that it was mostly political/social! And then along comes NIN to introduce gothic pedanticism to hardcore synth music. UGH!!! It's like Punk Rock love songs. Suddenly every half baked goth kid with cheap eyeliner and a DX7 is shouting suicide songs to his drum machine... the scene get's filled with bad ego's, bad attitudes and too much selfish whining bullshit. (Sister machine Gun, 16 Volt, Marilyn Manson).

So the people who built it up, like Bill Leeb, David Ogilvie, Jean-Luc DeMeyer and even Alain Jourgensen (the father of the second generation of this stuff) backed off and out of the scene... Bill Leeb SAID that Industrial synth music was old and outdated, that it was time to move forward! I'm not sure I completely agree with that but it says a lot that the main guy in FrontLine feels that way!

I think NIN wrecked that whole scene of aging punks with synths with his whining, and I think Marilyn Manson proves it! The dance music thing in industrial synth music is what's left of that scene, like Project Pitchfork, Funkervogt and all those crazy friggin' German angry techno bands... and they just don't even come close! My opinion, of course, but give me Skinny Puppy, Ministry and 242 any day...

Hey Influx - I've got Bass Baffles for the corners, a carpet and a heavy
wallhanging that cut the reflections down a bunch. It hardly rings at all.

When I removed the baffles and the Carpet to paint, I couldn't believe how
much it echoed in there.

I've got to go and buy a nicer rack now. My mini rack is way too big for my

My trusty Yamaha cs2x and my all time fav. the An1x with the Casio CZ101 beneith it ( on the floor). Not in the pictures are my Roland D50 and my Casio SK-1 and my yamaha CBX-K1XG and my Hammond drumbox (variomatic 64) and some other 'small stuff'.

Adio = adiophile and midi = midiman usb 2x2 and yamaha ux256.

We should makea new thread so we don't hijack this one.. But non of the whining about Manson changes the fact that his latest record is superb. It might not be very innovative, but it makes me wanna break shit.

Antichrist Superstar is great too. One of my all-time favorite records.

I don't give a shit if they "wrecked industrial".. They're still great records.

Alright Craig, e that makes a little more sense than what others have told me. I think you have that with any underground scene if it sells a few records someone is gonna water it down and try and sell it to the masses. Then that scenes hard-core followers blame the scenes decline on whatever bands happened to cash in on it. Anyway thanks for the well thought out intelligent responses if nothing else I got some new music to listen to and some new names/bands to read up on !

Nice Studios fellas...............I still haven't got mine out of boxes..................I'm jealous.
I'll post my pics as soon as I get it set up, maybe to a diff thread so we can skip the long load times on this one !

I've got to clean my studio... after looking at all of these pic's I feel guilty for letting my crap get out of hand... I got one of those pelican cases with the pick and pluck foam... and now the foam pieces are everywhere... CD's lyng about, cables draped over keyboards... even one of my lavalamps is burnt out!!!

You've all motivated me!

nice pic's everyone. I feel the odd man out as I don't have an Ikea desk though!

Looks really nice Boo! Shame about that whole Mac thing, but otherwise top notch I love the green... guess you could say I'm envious. How the hell do you get all those things coming out of two speakers, anyway? I don't see a mixer?

My new system arrived safely and is purring along with no problems. I've even managed to sort my old MOTU midi and new audio "problems" (those of you still having issues with MOTU stuff in XP, let me know... I may have a solution for you). Now when I get some time off of work, I will clean up all the fedex boxes and fire up the digicam.

It's a geeky (perhaps sad) feeling of creative omnipotence I get sitting behind three monitors (two for new system, one for old), sequencing softsynth drums, bass, piano, and other synths and fx, with 0 CPU drain on the main computer I am sequencing, recording, and mixing with. Those of you with a spare monitor around should at least get a dual head video card. They're the cheapest way to feel like you're getting two computers out of one.

Psy, The green freaked me out to begin with. I thought I'd made an awful mistake, but now I've grown to love it. It's like being in a giant tree. I'm so glad our landlord lets us paint our place.

Grrrr! and Mac 0wnz J00! I might get a mini shuttle PC or something later if I can find a spot for it. Maybe I should get a laptop instead. Dunno. Not really missing my PC much anymore. I finally found a space in the Closet for it.

As far as mixing is concerned, it all just goes into the Motu 828 and I mix it up in Logic. The latency in OS X is negligable, it seems. I've also hooked up my patch bay, so I can swap things out as I need them. I was thinking of getting a control surface, like Mackie control or something, but I'm getting used to mixing with the mouse now. Plus, I don't know if I want to add any more clutter just to watch a few motorised faders going up and down.

Now, where's those photos of your new setup??

That looks cozy, Psy. Is that the new little mini Wacom I see there?

Wish I had space for a bigger Controller keyboard like that - Starting to get a bit fed up octave shifting my little Oxygen, but then again, it's not like I ever use more than one note in a track... ;)

I was thinking of doing a Panoramic. Photoshop Elements has a nice picture stitcher that's pretty flawless.

no mini wacom. motu 2408 is in the rack on the right and the old system got the DSP Factory (which runs a lot better than it used to for some reason...)

you're probably talking about the little 1/4-rack items on top of the kurzweil, which are my midiman 2x2 and audiobuddy preamp (wow, just realized that they're both from the same company for the first time... heh, stoner)

Yes I'm definitly changing the wallpaper. It's not as bad as it looks in the picture, it's actually grey with black ships on it. It's gotta go though cause every time I go in there I get that journey (i think) song stuck in my head......................I'm sailing away

As far as the roll-o-wank cleaner goes Marrty.........well always be prepared thats my motto............or is that the boy scouts ???

Actually it's a a roll-o-shit cleaner. Since we moved into the new house (about 3 weeks ago) my little mutt has crapped in the house 3 times......every single time in the studio.

i'd be liking the uc33 more milan if i could configure it....the main glitch being my old studio128x 8x8 midi-patcher is serial and my new mac is non-serial usb. i got an adapter but now no way to install driver and opcode no longer provides it for mac.
my oms won't configure presently because of a weird driver install error i'm talking to evolution about. yeah....i swear you gotta LOVE or NEED to make muic to deal with this stuff sometimes. and not just the money either. i see my only way out is to get a new usb midi-patcher for the g4 i got last week. i'll keep the 128 x for the g3 and see if i can't midi-clock them together.....or something.

yeah....the room is cozy enough to allow me to flop down after work and basically hibernate.
i can either get busy or not.
of course i try but sometimes it's just about having a beer or 2 and goofin-off reporting site-bugs etc. ..... ....and>>>>
seeing what today's flowers are looking like.
not always in that order.

Very nice digs, clay... though did you sneeze whilst taking the picture? It's all about the tripod

And yes, BS, it's also about the lighting. I like incidental lighting (is that the word?... where you don't see any direct bulb, only reflections off of other surfaces?)... especially on mushrooms.

psy~ i've been looking at tripods.
but if you look closely...my hand is steady here as many of the details
would allude to.
what's happening i think is that my rotating lightball (which i actually use very occasionally)
on upper left corner is throwing out wild light everywhere. that...combined with the flash. it still doesn't explain certain things like the speakers and the harmon kardon burner going crazy....but hey...did you say shrooms?

my little canon definitely knows what those are.

I was jonesen for a music fix hadn't touched my keyboard in over two months now that I no longer have musical blue balls I gotta measure the room and then play around with some design ideas. I heard somewhere that you should have 3 times the distance of the speakers from your ears between the speakers and any walls. Is that true ?? Even from behind them ? I want enough room behind my desk to walk freely but not enough space to do cartwheels !! I suppose that they should be angled in too huh ?

Cleaned things up a bit and changed mix positions so I don't have to keep turning my head to be in stereo center while mixing at the PC.

Also added the Motormix

I want to compliment it with his "Lord of the Nazgul" soon.

no, its a Moog Voyager. RS7000 on top. Virus KB as a controller, and thats it for synths

the Voyager is a "for sale" piece, but why not try it out eh?

and, clay:

"any reason for going with the tannoy sub and not the krk?
i know the krk is expensive. "

bing! Got the tannoy for $200 through a friend. Ive heard it in action in a pro's studio and it was plenty sufficient

If I had a bigger room the KRK S12 might be ideal, but...in my room it would be too much bass anyway. or _could be_

Low 40's? We've had 2 feet of snow since Christmas.

I could use more space in my studio. When there's more than one person in there it gets tight. It's also open to the rest of the house - there's no door. So it's a real pain in the ass to keep it neat enough so it doesn't look bad from the other rooms. It'd be great if I could just shut the door.

errata - you use that mirage at all?

tell me this - if it's a dsk-8 - if you play a looped note, then edit the loop points while it's playing, does the loop jitter all over the sample in a most amusing fashion?

Naw X....

it's dsk-1, you can't adjust edit points in real time. And I haven't used it in a long time. I have TON'S of old noize samples for that thing... maybe I'll crack it out sometime.

hehe, you should hear my 12-yr-old Mackie 1202 nowadays. Must have some blown caps or dried out solder joints cause it has a symphony of hums that are frankly fun to mix in and of themselves.

Trying to decide if I should just go mixerless, or get a used digital thingy (lightpipe joints are nice with a 2408)

i'd be up for listening to some ground hum (ohmm) to some snappy pys-beats.

that might make a nice concept album....pure minimalism = beats + ground-hum.

one cool item i'd recommend for any studio which uses more than one system to monitor through is the behringer ultra-link pro splitter/mixer.
i use mine to split the signal to various speaker systems. point here being that each channel has a nice set of lights which afford a little visual action. it's a very viable unit in so far as it's usage but in terms of lights...for the 80 bucks you should be able to get it for...it's a sweet addition to any rig.

Just take a pile of instruments and recording devices and tangle them up together into a big pile of multi coloured cables flashing leds and whirring technology coloured boxes covered it all in a fine mist of dust cram it all into an impossible space(I call it the TARDIS)and there you have it no picture required.I can't find the camera in all this clutter anyway.

32/8 Tascam influx.

I absolutely hear you on the DAC's - it shows up the DAC on both 002r and AI-3's for what they are. I was bouncing stuff for andrew and tried diff connections, cables, routings and theres no comparison on the digital recording captured compared to the way it sounds on desk. Niot that im a wizard on the faders but if i could get something simple, like 2 channel input convertors for pc or mac to record and convert from the tascam stereo outs, id be a happy guy.

You know this shit right? Apogee, lucid, mytek etc? I dont mind mixing from the 002 and AI-3 outs to take it all on desk to mix and eq , just getting it back onto disk again seems my weakest link.

I guess i should really look into 2 channel interfaces- recomend anything?

Nice DJX.

Depressingly, I just moved, so all my hardware is nowhere to be seen, and my
passably-nice Mission speakers have been replaced by 2.1 computer hell. Man,
the whole studio shrunk in the wash... still, producing new material. Might have a
new EP for you to listen to in a month or two... (have been absent from board for
ages - moving to city, getting job, being tired, etc)

I turn the mackie 824's at work upside down when I do mastering. In fact, the other engineers have grown to like them that way, too, so they just kinda
stay upside down anymore. Maybe not as purty, but there is no law.

Here's mine atm. Those speakers aren't too good for nearfield monitoring. I'm going to get either Mackie HR624's or Dynaudio BM5A's. Still not sure which one..
The desk is home made and I have the right side rack for it to make it symmetrical.
More pictures at trancestate.net/gallery
For those who remember, it's DjMik here..just had to get rid of the Dj part

it's the position of the speakers mate really, perhaps they'd sound better in a better position?

I think they are too far apart (assuming you sit about 3-4 ft from the edge of the desk, and way too low. You need them to up above the monitors.

Also, what's the wall behind made of?... hollow plasterboard? - It's quite an up-padded room bt the look of it, no carpet even, must be quite reflective in there eh?

Yeah, the speakers probably need better positioning. I'm going to get some kind of wall mounts to get the tweeters at ear level. Or maybe even stands and drill holes for them through the table.. When monitoring loud the whole desk is vibrating...can't be too good for the sound. These are from my home theater so I'm going to need to get proper new ones soon.

The walls are made of chipboard (not sure if that's it in english..) There are some large curtains, sofa and bookshelf on the room too. It isn't absolutely horrible, it's a wooden house..but could be much better I guess. I'm going to get some acoustic foam to kill the early reflections. The desk hasn't been there for very long, I just got the synths set up now
