BS got some powerful stuff, and the Nova looks really cute next to the keyboard ; ).
Jock's studio is filled with bad-ass machines. Even the Akai s5000/6000 looks mean - like it wants to eat something with the big display ;).
Xoxos studio pic makes me drool. REALLY NICE light - damn inspiring!!! And the place seems very very cozy in general : ).

Maarten, yep its a Synthex. I only bought it coz of the JMJ laser harp thingy. I was pleasantly suprised with what you can get out of it though. Its a bit quirky sometimes when your pumping shed loads of midi through it, it tends to get its knickers in a twist.

Message 102/393 18-Nov-03 @ 08:15 PM - RE: Studio Pikzz
the "type" that "usually" is attracted to fraternity life isnt the "type" that usually ends up as an electronic musician.
in the states...MOST frats are just about partying, testosterone fueled "jock" behavior
OF COURSE there are differences, but individualism is not something usually fostered in a fraternity or sorority environment.
nothing I said even remotely resembled "sell your stuff youre not worthy" at all!

Message 106/393 19-Nov-03 @ 01:20 AM - RE: Studio Pikzz
Fraternities vary from one campus to another. At Syracuse we were your "average Joe's" who enjoyed the benefits of being in the Greek system. It would take too long to explain what they are, but there ARE benefits. We drank together, went to bars together, we played video games, we had study groups, we organized, participated and supported MANY various philanthropic endevours - more so than 90% of the non-Greek student body. I had MANY "friends" outside of my fraternity, more friends than brothers, but my brothers are the ones I still hang out with and communicate with.
It's always difficult to explain to people what my experience was like. If you weren't part of it, and you don't want to accept that there are GOOD things about being in a fraternity, you will never understand. You need to get all of your prejudices out of your head, because for every jackass fraternity "type", there is one guy who doesn't fit that mold. You need to get off your prejudicial high-horses. It's funny how people take different routes to get to the same place.

No offense taken.
"... but...my experience with frats is what it is, and isnt all that uncommon. Yours and or DZ's might have been different..."
Seriously: some of the best experiences I had were in the (outwardly) most conservative of conservative (or shallow) of environments. I've been in a Greek fraternatiy (stateside) and it has introduced me to some of the nicest people around the states: varying from Redbeck Hill Billy type blokes from around the Ozarks (how do you spell that?), meeting the most Yiddish of Yiddish philosopher dude from Chicago to springbreak beer-bung-keg-fest-o-mania in Florida.
Here in the Netherlands I joined a 'corps' which is by far the most conservative and elitist thing one can do (from the outside) full with white, upperclass, horseback riding, golfplaying 'ivyleagers'....never had a better time as with some of these blokes. Hell, we're still doing so much stuff together it boggles the mind. (don't go to mexico next april...we're there)...I've participated in putting together some of the hottest dance festivals with these bloke: yup, normaly they wear shirt and tie (you can't get into the 'clubhouse' without one) but this is partying with a capital P. And I am talking about borrowing starfighter jetplanes from the airforce, using old trolley/trams and airplanes as 'bridges' between buildings, totally rebuilding the old university library into a mega big party centre etc. All done by ourselfves, no contractors involved...
Wheniver I told people I was a member they were all like 'huh, but you are sooooo unlike them.....' (as if: I *was* them)
You see, there's is people behind those greek letters not droids. Just thought I'd let you know.
But again, no offense taken, just wanted to set a potential prejudice straight...I know exactly what you mean by annoying, letter wearing bud light gulping morrons....

that is ALL I meant about the frat thing, and "they" dont tend to be into "techno" now do they.
dunno...frats = groups, with rules and adherances. Not my thing, never will be...and the ones I had experience with you just bought your friends...paid into this group...bout as shallow as it gets.

Bass response.. Well, it's not that great in that room, but it was no better when the monitors were against the left wall or in the corner, and the stereo image was fucked up that way.
The drums are rigged up like that because I don't have room for them set up right, and I can't play them like a real kit anyways. I do kick drum with my right hand on the floor tom, and snare with the left, then add percussion and cymbals later. I really just use 'em to rough out ideas. I bought them when I had a drummer, but I like using them now that he's gone.
The Nord Lead is autographed by KMFDM and is not for sale. Ever.
You'll get to hear some music soon I hope. I'm looking for a voice right now, but there's like 5 songs demoed out pretty well now. Shouldn't be long.

It's a Yamaha DTX Express kit. I think I paid $400 for it, and it was pretty much like new except for the thick layer of dust they collected in their previous home. The kick trigger did die, but the replacement pintech is a much better trigger anyways.

Adios is an awesome album for people who are fans of dance music. It's a very dancy record for them. The MDFMK record is really good too. Attak has some good electronic grooves in it, but it starts moving back towards metal. WWIII is kind of link NIN's "Broken" in the sense that the record was intended to be a "band" record, where the "full band" feel of the live band influences the record heavily. It's not as good as the others I don't think. If you're a metalhead at heart check out Nihl and Xtort. Fucking great guitar playing on those records.

Basically, start at MDFMK or Adios and work your way backwards Avoid records older than Money like the plague
Nihil is probably their "best" CD, but if you're not a big fan of guitar shit then it might not be for you. Ditto with Xtort.

I forgot about a lot of these albums I had em all on tape but gave all my tapes to my lil brother when I got a cd player in my car years ago. I wonder if it is still a copyright violation to download tracks of an album you already bought once but lost ??? or In the case of god lives underwater bought twice ? I had a couple of copys of Nihil too.
Message 156/393 04-Dec-03 @ 07:22 PM - RE: Studio Pikzz
I saw God Lives Underwater open for KMFDM back in about '95.. I met GLU's singer wandering in the parking lot, but he was so whacked on drugs he didn't know he even had played that night. Sad... The band lost its momentum after he went to rehab, and are now disbanded. I've got a copy of an unreleased followup to "Space Age" called "Up off the Floor" which is also a really good record.
I can hook you up with mp3s if you want. I don't think it'd be illegal to give away copies of a record that never got released :D

Never see craig around so much as this thread! A few industrial notes and he's out of the woodwork!
I did Acid with Pigface in 1991. When Skinny Puppy and Trent Reznor were a part of it!!
"black man, white man, rip the system!"
too much fun those days... before the whole thing took itself too seriously. Craig, you might not appreciate this, but i sincerely believe that Trent Reznor fucked up industrial music. (And don't any of you start with the whole "Those bands aren't industrial" thing, we all know Neubauten were the ONLY industrial act to ever earn a dime!)

Much of what passes as "Industrial" these days is either more synthpop (VNV Nation et al) or has become hybridized with metal, a la Bile (and even KMFDM). You can see that a lot of the players started moving in other directions around the same time. I don't know if that's just a coincidence or not. Around that time Bill Leeb began concentrating on Delerium and neglecting Front Line, and Front Line's later stuff is definately not the raw, edgy straight industrial of old. Still very good records though. KMFDM got much more "metal band" for a while, then went dancy, then metal again..
I'm probably the wrong person to be expounding on this because I actually LIKE a lot of what the big players have done after NIN/the "great industrial collapse"
And you don't see me around here as often because we don't have many musical conversations like this any more.

Message 168/393 05-Dec-03 @ 11:05 PM - RE: Studio Pikzz
Ok... Rarely if ever did any of the synth industrial folks sing about their broken hearts. It's what made the genre deep (IMO) that it was mostly political/social! And then along comes NIN to introduce gothic pedanticism to hardcore synth music. UGH!!! It's like Punk Rock love songs. Suddenly every half baked goth kid with cheap eyeliner and a DX7 is shouting suicide songs to his drum machine... the scene get's filled with bad ego's, bad attitudes and too much selfish whining bullshit. (Sister machine Gun, 16 Volt, Marilyn Manson).
So the people who built it up, like Bill Leeb, David Ogilvie, Jean-Luc DeMeyer and even Alain Jourgensen (the father of the second generation of this stuff) backed off and out of the scene... Bill Leeb SAID that Industrial synth music was old and outdated, that it was time to move forward! I'm not sure I completely agree with that but it says a lot that the main guy in FrontLine feels that way!
I think NIN wrecked that whole scene of aging punks with synths with his whining, and I think Marilyn Manson proves it! The dance music thing in industrial synth music is what's left of that scene, like Project Pitchfork, Funkervogt and all those crazy friggin' German angry techno bands... and they just don't even come close! My opinion, of course, but give me Skinny Puppy, Ministry and 242 any day...

My new system arrived safely and is purring along with no problems. I've even managed to sort my old MOTU midi and new audio "problems" (those of you still having issues with MOTU stuff in XP, let me know... I may have a solution for you). Now when I get some time off of work, I will clean up all the fedex boxes and fire up the digicam.
It's a geeky (perhaps sad) feeling of creative omnipotence I get sitting behind three monitors (two for new system, one for old), sequencing softsynth drums, bass, piano, and other synths and fx, with 0 CPU drain on the main computer I am sequencing, recording, and mixing with. Those of you with a spare monitor around should at least get a dual head video card. They're the cheapest way to feel like you're getting two computers out of one.

Grrrr! and Mac 0wnz J00! I might get a mini shuttle PC or something later if I can find a spot for it. Maybe I should get a laptop instead. Dunno. Not really missing my PC much anymore. I finally found a space in the Closet for it.
As far as mixing is concerned, it all just goes into the Motu 828 and I mix it up in Logic. The latency in OS X is negligable, it seems. I've also hooked up my patch bay, so I can swap things out as I need them. I was thinking of getting a control surface, like Mackie control or something, but I'm getting used to mixing with the mouse now. Plus, I don't know if I want to add any more clutter just to watch a few motorised faders going up and down.
Now, where's those photos of your new setup??

tell me this - if it's a dsk-8 - if you play a looped note, then edit the loop points while it's playing, does the loop jitter all over the sample in a most amusing fashion?
Message 314/393 04-Mar-04 @ 11:40 PM - RE: Studio Pikzz
it's dsk-1, you can't adjust edit points in real time. And I haven't used it in a long time. I have TON'S of old noize samples for that thing... maybe I'll crack it out sometime.

i use mine to split the signal to various speaker systems. point here being that each channel has a nice set of lights which afford a little visual action. it's a very viable unit in so far as it's usage but in terms of lights...for the 80 bucks you should be able to get it for...it's a sweet addition to any rig.

32/8 Tascam influx.
I absolutely hear you on the DAC's - it shows up the DAC on both 002r and AI-3's for what they are. I was bouncing stuff for andrew and tried diff connections, cables, routings and theres no comparison on the digital recording captured compared to the way it sounds on desk. Niot that im a wizard on the faders but if i could get something simple, like 2 channel input convertors for pc or mac to record and convert from the tascam stereo outs, id be a happy guy.
You know this shit right? Apogee, lucid, mytek etc? I dont mind mixing from the 002 and AI-3 outs to take it all on desk to mix and eq , just getting it back onto disk again seems my weakest link.
I guess i should really look into 2 channel interfaces- recomend anything?

Depressingly, I just moved, so all my hardware is nowhere to be seen, and my
passably-nice Mission speakers have been replaced by 2.1 computer hell. Man,
the whole studio shrunk in the wash... still, producing new material. Might have a
new EP for you to listen to in a month or two... (have been absent from board for
ages - moving to city, getting job, being tired, etc)

Here's mine atm. Those speakers aren't too good for nearfield monitoring. I'm going to get either Mackie HR624's or Dynaudio BM5A's. Still not sure which one..
The desk is home made and I have the right side rack for it to make it symmetrical.

Message 392/393 29-May-06 @ 09:41 AM - RE: Studio Pikzz
I think they are too far apart (assuming you sit about 3-4 ft from the edge of the desk, and way too low. You need them to up above the monitors.
Also, what's the wall behind made of?... hollow plasterboard? - It's quite an up-padded room bt the look of it, no carpet even, must be quite reflective in there eh?

The walls are made of chipboard (not sure if that's it in english..) There are some large curtains, sofa and bookshelf on the room too. It isn't absolutely horrible, it's a wooden house..but could be much better I guess. I'm going to get some acoustic foam to kill the early reflections. The desk hasn't been there for very long, I just got the synths set up now
