synth is set to 1. I record a part and then export it as
a midi file. When I import it back in the part looks ok
and all the notes show in the edit screens. But when I
play it,the synth is reset to 1st patch and there is no
sound, even though midi out is active on cubase and midi
activity is shown on the part(A column). If I open the
inspector and increase the volume I get the sound.
If i select a patch and play the part, when I double click
back to the beginning it resets the synth back to patch 1.
But this doesn't happen if I set the channel thru to 'any'
on cubase. How can it reset it back to patch 1 when the
onlything in the part are notes, there are no control change
messages or volume messages??

I assume, you are selecting a patch on the synth, playing the sound and midi into cubase....then.....what happens if you DO NOT save it as a midifile, but as a SONG, or as ARR...?...
also, is your synth set to recieve midid in a multimode setting...where you assign patches to midi channels....
First, try setting up your system as I specify inside the "MIDI" section of this site....
there's a bit about how to set-up the system in terms of midi cable routing & how to set the sequencer & master keyboard.....if that fails, re-post with more details...which synth etc...I cant understand why you are saving stuff as midifiles...is it a GM synth??...cos if not, then that will fail
