Oberheim MATRIX 1000
As the demand for old analog gear reaches fever pitch, here's a unit, still in production, that is fully midi controllable, but uses real analog sounds & synthesis....and offers 1000 preset voices !!......(hence the name)....and you get the genuine Oberheim filters & sound...
The Matrix 1000 is only 6 note poly, & mono-timbrel, with only a single mono line out...... Each voice features two syncable Oscillators, the classic Oberheim Voltage Controlled Filter, Noise, two Low Frequency Oscillators, three Envelope Generators, plus Tracking and Ramp generators. ...but it also allows things like cross-modulation between different perameters, almost like an FM synth....and it does make some FM like sounds, like chimes & voice type patches but with the addition of real analog stuff to sound extra-cool......You can also stack all six Matrix 1000 voices in the Unison mode, transforming the Matrix 1000 into a twelve oscillator lead synthesizer.
The sounds are a mixture of all the usual analog Basses, Pads & Washes, Brass, Strings, & widdly stuff........You get alot of presets, because you need a software editor to edit this thing.....
Well that's it....I decided to include it in the list, as they still in production, & are not uncommon secondhand......you can edit them on a computor....& the fact they are mono-timbrel don't matter with hard disk systems........I never owned one, but they will provide alot of real analog sounds with midi control.......All the reviews of this box rate the sounds highly.....just find an editor for it.....There's an editor for the PC linked below....and there is also an Atari editor you can get.....There is also PC or Mac editor....it costs £69...or £50 if you get with a new Matrix 1000......but I can't find a share/freeware editor.........The other option is that if you use Cubase, there's a mixermap/editor for the Matrix in there....... By the way.... you can cascade up to 6 Matrix units together to get even more polyphony.......(which might be useful if you're into doing like old David Kronenburg film soundtrack stuff, with pads that last 4 minutes)....

Together with the ACCESS programmer the Matrix 6/1000
is a unbeatable cheap analog machine with real time control
and great analog synth sounds. You'll spend hours with tuning
the knobs and just synthing through the night.
No comparison to boring digital only synths.
I'like it!

Well, it's essentially a 1000-preset analogue synth, aimed mainly at the kind of people who haven't got time to fiddle around and make their own noises. As such, it's great - although not all of the presets are brilliant (and it gets quite boring going through them all) there are enough good and usable sounds there for anybody. If you want a proper synth, however, go with the Matrix-12 (or find a second-hand OBXa). Think of it as a kind of analogue seasoning box.

It's alright. It has a lot of power for the price,
that's for sure... something you may only notice
when you grab a computer editor. The variety of
sounds is sort of limited (IMHO the filter is a
tad weak and cold sounding for analogs), but thanks
to an extensive matrix modulation, you can get very
whack with this synth fast. And if you don't feel
like programming, you still have 1000 presets...

The Matrix 1000 is a powerful machine. However, to use it to its fullest potential an editor is essential.
I have not been able to get the mixermap/editor in Cubase to work with the Matrix 1000, however it is there and seems to work for others.
The best editor I have seen is the OB-6000 available at:
http://members.aol.com/tbolte2700/index.htm
It is the easiest to use because of its graphic interface.

Might you have an original list of patches for the 1000? Also, do you know of any hotkey reboot for the initializing ?
Thanks,

PHAT, FAT and Fat is how it sounds. Distinctive Oberheim sounds. Low, Fat basses. Searing Brasses. Warm Strings. Definitely an excellent analog sound module though designing sounds on it thru the ACCESS Programmer is a pain in the Ass ! "A Thousand Sounds in A Single Rack Space" is all I could say !

Opcode had an Mac Editor/Librarian module for their Galaxy pgm. I'm runnning v1.2.9 so I assume it's still current on v2.1. Try the Opcode site at WWW.OPCODE.COM. As far as the sound goes, if you like the Oberheim sound you'll love the M-1000. The output is a bit noisy but, it's not given me any problesm besides that. I still use it for pads and ambient back grounds. Don't see too many 2nd hand anymore. I'm pretty certain it's still in production if you don't mind paying retail.

am using the matrix 6 the 61 key predecessor to the 1000 both midiquest and emagics sounddiver have editor modules for this synth
I recomend the 6 for someone looking for fat analogue sounds and needing a controller keyboard the 6 is bitimbral and has 2 outs. the keyboard is 61 keys with velocity and aftertouch. it is splittable as well with flexible voice allocation.
both voices in bitimbral mode can be output to the same or different midi channel. the down side on this keyboard is no knobs or sliders it is still much more convenient to use a computer based editor. all in all a great value. They can be had in the us for $300-$500

Hey, get serious. The Matrix 1000 sucks. All 1000 sounds suck. I guess it's OK for ambient pads and such, but it's one of weakest sounding analogs available.

I just bought a Matrix 1000 from Music Connections in Bristol second-hand for £200. It needed a self-calibration, luckily this is an automatic function accessable from the front panel. I think the sounds are great and would love to get in and create some new patches. I would like to get hold of editing software and patch libraries if anyone can help please do!

There are a number of software editors available for this unit on the web. Some free some reasonably inexpensive. Lots of sound potential, especially if you hook it up to some kind of external MIDI controller.

Even without an editor, there are 800 (800 preset, 200 user = 1000) patches to choose from so you'll find something in it.

I just love this synth man!! it's got
great analog synth, analog brass, pads,
etc.... plus you get 1000 patches and
some of them are very useful. When I
want to program sounds, I use Matrix6
or Opcode Galaxy. If you can get it for
less than $100, then buy it before you
regret later. I got it from my friend
for only $50. Thanx my friend.

Brilliant module for the money. This has a totally different character to soft-synths. The 1000 patches are a mixed bag, and definitely have a late 80s style to them, but with an editor you can easily get more contempory sounds out of it. Dual detuned PWMed oscillators is one of my favourite Matrix sounds, this sounds incredibly lush and really shows up similar synths like the Roland JX8P/MKS70, which rely totally on the in-built chorus module for lushness. I've put some demo mp3s on my webpage if anyone's interested.

Hello,
I am looking for the Oberheim Matrix-1000 patch list for Pro Tools 6.7 LE running on Windows XP SP1. It has to be in .midnam format for Pro Tools. Every editing software I have come across is either for Mac OS and are rather expensive just for this one instrument I need patches for. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance......
Pezh
