Casio RZ-1

If you see one in the s/h ad's, it will be cheap, (somewhere around the 100 quid mark)........Perhaps you should check it out, as long as you can try it through a decent system. The RZ1 had a limited sampling system in it to accompany it's ROM kit, so you can sling in some 909 or other stuff you need.....Also has seperate out's with nice sliders for each sound, (ala the TR707)..... A big drum box, with big pads for some improvised live drum triggering !!........FOR THE MONEY 8/10

I love this thing, my second favorite drum machine... the high hats and clap rule, and there's a limited 'tone' control for the samples (actually a low pass filter) which has that great grainy 12bit sound...

i love my rz-1, getting samples into the sample banks is a bit tricky at first but you get used to it...the griddy sounds of the machine rule though...gives it that underground feel...whats best is i bought mine in a pawn shop for only 100 dollars...peace

i used to have 2 of these but I sold one. These are old skool gems. Sample a hat "shhhhhhhhrunch!" Damn that 8 bit (not 12) rules! The claps and kiks are slammin. "Bap!" "Boosh!" hot damn. As you can see from my descriptions i like this machine.

I got on of these just the other day... for $100 NZ, which is about 40 USD... this thing has the shittiest bass drum ever, even compared to other old PCM drums, the sampling more than makes up for it though, I sampled in the 909 BD from hammer head software drum machine(www.threechords.com/hammerhead) and it sounds way fatter in the rz1

at first I thought the hi hats where too cold and deep, but now I think they are nice and brash, as useable as 909 hats... I only wish they had a decay control... the hats and cymbals tend to no decay nicely and they just end abruptly.

my latest pipe dream is to copy the 909 bass drum circuitry and trigger it off the RZ1 BD out put... theres this guy who built a replica of a 808 and a 909 into this rack mount case, so it not that crazy.

well it is an unusual box as far as it's actual sound. It has 8 bit samples in it and a distinct lack of modern civility...the samples will be very small but make a cool addition when you just "gotta" stick in one more car crash for the back beat! No I mean a door slam. Oh well, you get it.

I am willing to bet that this puppy shows up more than any producers want to admit. Layer this quaint machine with other samples and beats for a really retro effect. Retro, thats the word.
This is not a great box for jamming live via changing patterns, at least I have little luck doing with it what I did with an old EmU sp 12. Write if you have a secret technique.
Those MP3s I posted are good examples of
my own efforts, maybe a listen would convince you? heh

If your drummachine , or any synth for that matter looses memory after power off

then check the internal battery , if the syth is older than say 5 years
chances are this is the reason ..

its usually a small battery 1.5 v to 6v , some look like watch batterys , some are other shapes , shouold be easy to find , in some cases its soldered to the board
not too big a deal to unsolder it .. or have someone do it for you just dont heat up the battery too much when u do it

one note , if you own older korg analog synths , check the battery has not gone bad and leaked acid onto the main board , which is very common

this can happen with any battery and any synth
so check this now! .. acid and circuits is not a good combination

Best $65 drum machine around, does anyone know IF the internal battery is soldered ?? My internal batts dead and would like to know before I open it if soldering is required. I will just have someone do it for me if soldered cause I have had bad luck opening electronics so dont want to risk opening if its not just a slip in battery.

Very simple machine- only 1 kit -but the 4 sample pads give endless options. Big -solid , real internal power supply (so you'll never get that lose adapter input headache u get with the little machines)

I run mine through an old 80s MXR multi-effects unit useing distortion and flange , dont fall for the Roland-TR rip-offs these are way more solid . You don't really want to sound like Salt n' Pepper anyway, or do you.
