Red5 Audio RV6

Red5Audio RV6 is a budget, Chinese-made, large diaphragm condenser mic, suitable for vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, (cab mic-ing & ambient cab mic-ing), drum overheads or whatever.

This is total budget territory at only £45.00 GBP, so let's not expect the earth from this baby, what we'll get hopefully is a nice sounding clean non-brittle sound... Checkout the video review for the mic package, build etc, and here's the spec's below - Audio examples of the mic will be added soom.

Red5Audio RV6 video review - 512kb .wmv - 640 x 480 - D/L

Audio file 1: dancetech_rv6_demo_spanish.mp3 - [320kbps 44.1 stereo]

Added this last night to get something down as a starter - more demo's to come - There's a bit of hiss cos i had a PC near the mic in the room, and the room itself with untreated plastered bare walls was a tad boomy in the midranges for the guitar which was an old Hohner spanish with ancient strings and an aweful action, and please add many years of NOT playing spanish acoustic, ouch!.. my fingers!... lol - Anyways i like the way the mic emphasises slightly the spanish tone and woodyness of the guitar - I Recorded this one thru a Joe Meek VC3 using all Red5audio Leads (XLR to the Joe Meek & the 1/4" jack-to-jack from the Joe Meek to the E-mu 1829m Line in front Left), into Logic - No compression or fx on record - Added a dash of RCL compression on mix, a tad of platignumverb and a smidgen of enhancer on the final BUS out to 'air' it a touch more cos the strings were a bit flat. Drums are NI Battery Jazz kit samples.

More audio to come which will be a large gibson j200 jumbo size steel string which is having a new nut right now, and some vocals.

I've had an RV6 since January this year, using it for recording vocals and steel-strung acoustic guitar in my Cubase-based home studio. Most of my recording is for commercially released 'library music' CD's, and for my own jazzy instrumental music. I use a lot of VST instruments. Only a small number of recorded parts are miked 'real' sounds. So up until the RV6, I made do with dynamic vocal stage-mics for such parts. Far less than ideal, of course - limited frequency response, harsh 'peaky' upper midrange presence, and low sensitivity. Only by disguising such tracks in a mix, and using a lot of EQ could I use the results.

But cost is a big consideration for me at present, and many of the 'new-wave' of cheap Chinese-made condensers seem to look, feel, and sound cheap. Not so the RV6. It is beautifully made, with a solid, heavyweight casing. And remarkably for it's price, it includes a good shock-mount, a plastic protective carrying case, a foam pop-filter, and a second adjustable mounting. It arrived promtly after my online order, and in perfect condition.

How does it sound? Much better than my dynamic mics on acoustic sources - more 'open' and wide ranging in response. I can now actually record acceptable sounding acoustic parts that are 'out on their own', rather than half-buried in a mix to hide their shortcomings. The mic is not a high-end device, nor does it pretend to be, but it is a great improvement over my dynamic mics for acoustic music/vocal recording. It's noise fugure is good, and it has a high output level (adjustable with the -10db switch for loud sources) - less gain required to drive my analogue front-end mixer, so less noise. The miking distance seems quite critical, depending on the sound required - there is a very noticeable proximity effect, so that vocals recorded around three or four inches away have much more low/mid range content than the thinner sound produced a foot or more away. But there is also a 100k roll off switch, very useful for taming any 'boominess'. With any mic, vocal parts parts often seem to sound too 'full' to sit in a mix, without rolling off some off the low end, but a full range sound seems more natural in a relatively sparse arrangement. My only niggle (and for the price, who could possibly complain?) is that to my ears, the mic sounds overly bright. My monitors are only average, but the overly bright sound is evident when I reference it on different speakers and phones. The top end seems prone to sibilance on vocals, and it does make my rich and even sounding Simon and Patrick acoustic sound quite cutting and sharp. A little top end EQ cut, or a (free) de-esser VSTi sorts this out.

Overall, at this price, I consider the RV6 to be an absolute bargain, very well made, and capable of some very nice results.

Hey dude, you could get a job on QVC after the RedAudio RV6 review! Good one.
Noticed you referred to the low-pass switch as operating at 100dB! We all know you meant to say 100hz OK.
It looks like the mic can be suspended upside down when its in the shock-mount - I've always thought a mic looks SO cool upside down over a drumkit or a couple of vocalists (we all have our funny ways)
I'm expecting mine today or tomorrow - delivery times, by all accounts, are excellent from these people!
May i suggest that you demo the off-axis response in real time (by moving the mic during a test piece) as it is good for users to know how much this mic can reject unwanted sound by careful placement.
Keep up the good work
Steve

hi, I just wonder that in Europe the Conrad sells a mic looks very similar to the RV6 for 99EUR. They call it McCrypt SM-3000. Same look, same switches, bag-popkiller-stand. Same parameters on the datasheet. I would ask anyone who can look into the inner parts and maybe test both microphones if they are also the same in term of acoustical/musical touch. In the EU a lot easier to walk down to the closest Conrad shop and buy this mic.

Regards,
nandu

AT THIS PRICE THIS HAS TO BE A JOKE?!?

I don't think I'm the only one who must have thought so but the various reviews made me doubt my own judgment and at the price I didn't think I had anything to lose. So we took the plunge.

I've been using the RV6 for semi-professional use (check the website to hear where it's been used on some of the songs, not all) for roughly a year and the results, in comparison to other brand condenser mics that I've used before, have been spectacular.

Again I have to admit that at the price that these sell, I didn't expect them to be as good as they are. Granted, they're not high-end, but they do the job VERY WELL. And before anyone thinks that I'm endorsed by Red5, I'm not, I'm just a very satisfied consumer, happy at being able to get a TRUE good bargain (there's not enough of those as far as I'm concerned).

I've used it mainly on vocals and acoustic guitar, nylon as well as steel string and the result has been really good. Even though I've got a computer with it's rather noisy fan on in the same room, it never affects the recording.

To get a shock mount in the price is a big plus too and the microphone has a 'confidence inspiring' weight to it as well.

All in all, I have to say that this is a really good buy, in this price range it has to be one of the best.

Just bought this mic as i'm just starting out and am on a budget. I got it based on reviews and recommendations. This seems a really good quality mic and I can't wait to get recording with it! I'll be sure to give a full review with a link when i've got something recorded.

@Aky
I didn't buy this mic but yes it should work in any mixer that has Phantom power..

To all.. does anyone have any soundclips of the RV6 that i can listen to..? I'm not keen on risking £55 (now) unless i hear it first..

The audio link at the top doesn't work..

cheers

I have had 2 of these for some months now, I use them for classical
recording with a Belking 'direct to iPod' mixer. They are quite
exceptional value for money and really I can't think of any reason why I
would change them for a better known make. Sound is smooth, detailed and
very reliable. Makes excellent CD's of choral music.

In my opinion, a real bargain.

@Ash - Search for phantom power preamp usb. You can't plug a phantom powered condenser mic directly into your PC.

I have owned this mic for a couple of months and it has been amazing. Nice round quality to the sound. Recorded vocals, acoustic guitar and shaker so far.

For the price you can't go wrong. The case and accessories are fantastic.
