Rode NT2
Rode mic's are Autralian and they have a few models which are very widespread amongst users from home recordists to pro studios. Most well known of their models are the NT1, the NT3 and this baby; the NT2, which has now been upgraded to the new NT2-A - This older NT2 first appeared around 1995 and was one of the first of the new wave of affordable Chinese manufactured microphones which has since turned into a veritable tsunami of choice at bargain prices - Incidently, the NT2 was the last microphone Rode had manufactured for them in China... all the new models are made in Australia apparently. You'll see alot of these original NT2 mic's still used today in many college sound-recording courses because they represented such value back in the day and are reliable enough to still be going strong! - On top of that they offer everything a noob needs to get to grips with typical large diaphragm condenser mic recording and thus you'll see 'em alot on such courses where the more esoteric and pricier German mic's might be a little too expensive for everyday use. The NT2 is well made, and shipped with a very robust shockmount and a nice soft SM58-style, 'pencil-case' baggie for everyday storage & transportation. The mic basket is quite solid, made of decent guage wire, and the whole thing is pretty robustly built.
Obviously based visualy on the Neumann u87, the NT2 is finished in a nice satin sheeny brushed silver which doesn't look out of place in any quality studio. The NT2 is transformerless in design - which basicaly or 'classicaly' equates to higher sensitivity and lower noise - employing a 25mm capsule with a gold plated membrane and is switchable between cardioid and omni patterns. The NT2 also has a 3-way switch to select between either an overall 10dB pad (to lower the output) or a LF (Low-Frequency) roll-off - The third switch position simply bypasses both of the 2 other switch functions.
Oh well, a bit of an old classic eh?... and there's plenty of them about in the free-ad's, so into Dancetech it goes! - These NT2's were like 450 quid (GBP) on release but can be had nowadays quite cheaply s/h so check 'em out if you fancy a decent mic for cheap!

This is strange. I had a Rode NT1 (older style like this) that clearly said
"Manufactured in Australia." They were not Chinese mics. At least mine wasn't
I miss this mic. I'd like to get another one.

from sos magazine: "The NT2A replaces the original NT2, which was the
very last mic Rode had built in China. Apparently this was a difficult decision,
as the NT2 was still selling very well. It seems that Rode wanted to sever the
last ties with Chinese manufacturing so that they could put Made In Australia
on their mics and distance themselves from the other 'Made In China'
brands."
from GS: "the original NT1 and NT2 circuits were designed by Jim Williams
(Chinese capsule and body, Australian assembled American designed
circuitry)."

I should note I own an array of first-rate condenser and tube mics, and the Røde NT2 large-diaphragm multi-pattern condenser mic is one of my favorite go-to mics. It never ceases to amaze me. I don't regret the small investment I laid out for my Røde NT2 - it was well worth every penny. A veteran engineer in one of the major U.S. music markets thoughtfully told me no one would ever know I used the NT2 in my recordings, if I chose not to disclose it - the mic sounds that good. I agree - my NT2 is now a vintage mic and I've relied on it for countless vocal, guitar, and acoustic piano recordings since 1994. I often go back to my NT2, preferring it to other more expensive premium mics. The price point was an additional benefit. I'm grateful to have this fine instrument in my locker.
