I have been using a dbx500 since 1979 in my own PA system and the audience is totally blown away with the sound, literally. It has been 1000% reliable never given any reason for concern in 26 years. I have also installed them into many nightclubs around the world in the late 70's early 80's for a company I worked for. I remember one incident in a club in Amsterdam, we had designed a loudspeaker cabinet based around an 18 foot organ pipe and installed two in this club. They were both bolted and strapped to the main wall above the suspended ceiling adjacent to the dance floor. While we were getting on with some of the other jobs, I decided to turn the sound system on and play some jazz funk music while we worked. We were using a custom built mixer, JBL crossover, HH S500D amps powering JBL full range loudspeakers in tri-amp configuration and of course our first dbx500 running another HH S500D amp into our prototype sub cabinets. After about 60 seconds of music there was an almighty smash as hunderds of glasses all started to leap off the shelves in some strange suicide pact only to hit the bar floor some 250mS later. The bar was about 70 feet away from where we were working, we initially could not figure out what was happening until we turned the sound down when it all stopped, the penny finally dropped! Anyway while it lasted, the downrush of air from the speakers port was totally unbelievable, you could blow dry your hair or blow the froth from your beer while having a total body massage from above, it was totally awrsome! I love this unit to bits despite the broken glass.

I bought this one in 1980 and used this baby in my mobile soundsystem till 1998.
Since that time I installed this in my home audio set along with more vintage audio stuff.
Works still superb, especially when playing old disco vinyl 12".
Well built with the best components.

I have installed many of these units into nightclubs in the late 70's and early 80's. I remember one club in particular, in the Netherlands where we installed a dbx500 as an extra effect to the main PA. The input to it was from the main mixer output, and the LF output was connected to an HH S500D power amp. This was driving two specially designed loudspeaker cabinets, each with an 18 inch driver in, and a 32 foot internally folded horn. The SPL of the bass produced was awesome; standing in front of the opening was like standing in front of a fan, it made your trousers flap. When we first fired it up, about 500 glasses went crashing to the floor over at the bar, some 100 feet away across the other side of the club. Good job we weren't opening for another week, as we had to replace them and make a modification to the shelves.
I was so impressed by now that in June of 1979 I bought one for my own mobile discotheque. I got it from a company in Dean Street, London and paid the grand sum of £285 for it, which in those days was a lot of money for a bit of sound processing kit.
It still works perfectly today after nearly 30 years of service and to date I have never found another piece of kit which is anywhere near as good, despite the digital age in which we now live. Even sound systems with a dedicated sub output cant hold a candle to a dbx500 signal going through the right cabinets.

Yes the 500 is very good sounding unit.....
For those of you not familiar with DBX heritage back in the 70's the company
did a lot of research and experimenting with sub-harmonic synthesis. 500 had
two generations, first with the inscription "professional disco boom box" and
second is pictured on top of this thread. On both of these models internal
printed circuit it is identical with other,........less expensive models readily
available today. Removing or modifying few minor parts anyone can have
today, as many 500 one desires, I have nine of them and all sound great.
