Quasar in 1994 for £995 GBP, squarely aimed at the dance music market & it competed at the time with products like the JV1080 from Roland, but was more orientated to dance/club music sounds. The Quasar is an analog modelling or VA (Virtual Analog) synth, using what Quasimidi called M.A.S.S (Multi Algorithm Sound Synthesis) which was a combination of PCM samples, FM & additive synthesis.

Quasimidi Quasar

German indy company Quasimidi released the Quasar in 1994 for £995 GBP, squarely aimed at the dance music market & it competed at the time with products like the JV1080 from Roland, but was more orientated to dance/club music sounds. The Quasar is an analog modelling or VA (Virtual Analog) synth, using what Quasimidi called M.A.S.S (Multi Algorithm Sound Synthesis) which was a combination of PCM samples, FM & additive synthesis.

Quasar is 16 part multi-timbrel, has over 1000 sounds or patches, is 64 note polyphonic and GM compatible, so the drums are on the usual GM channel 10 when functioning in multi-timbrel mode. Quasar operates in two modes: Sequencer, which allows 16 part multi-timbrel operation with single sounds only assignable to channels... and 'Performance' mode where up to 4 individual sounds can be layered while using both Fx processors.

Quasar also features two multi-effect processors onboard, one dedicated to reverb & delay fx while the other does modulation FX including chorus, phasers, rotaries & panning, more delays, wah-wah, distortion and even a vocoder. Quasar also hosts a quite reasonably comprehensive Arpeggiator too with Portamento.

Round at the back you'll find two traditional MIDI Inputs as well as MIDI Out & Thru plus the main LEFT (MON) & Right outputs which are accompanied by a further 4 additional separate outputs.

Sounds are typical dance music fodder of the era with the drums containing the usual 909/808 as well as 'House', 'Analog' & more. The Quasar also features 200 layered ROM 'Performance' patches with an additional 100 user editable ones, all of which can utilise up to 4 sounds & both FX processors. Optional ROM and RAM boards were also sold, providing up to 256 new single sounds and 100 new performance layer sounds. An old but gold classic synth which despite its age still offers a good base palette of techno & club orientated sounds with a solid & clean sound.

I've owned a Technox since they came out, and yes the sound quality maybe abit iffy....However, for bread & butter electronic sounds it's spot on, the Technox always plays a major part in backing on my tracks handling all the underlying sounds....with analog machines and samplers doing the rest.

I've seen Technox modules for £399 new now as they are discontinued, try to find one if you can :)

I have had a Technox for about 2 1/2 yrs and I have found it to be very good for bread and butter sounds.

It has some really good effects as well. The sounds are nice and dirty and the drum sounds arent to bad

Hi,

I bought a Technox last week from a 2nd Hand Store,

and I have Problems to get music out of it. Only the demo comes out of my mixer,

perhaps it is the sequencer, but in the manuell, there

is only written the use with a midi-keyboard. Could you help me,

perhaps you have online-manuels, or something like

that. Bye markus

De Quazar is een vette bak boordevol vage sounds die goed te manipuleren zijn voor underground techno. De bediening ervan is zeer weloverwogen

Been using a Quasar for over 3 years now, and it rocks! You can do lots of crazy analogue sounding stuff with it when using a bass or synth sound in "MONO" or "LEAD" mode (those portamentos - AAAAAH !) Handling the expander is logical, it has 4 single outputs and a stereo sum. The only thing that sucks: only 2 expansion boards can be fitted at the same time,... because the boards sound the business, too!

Discontinued? Probably because the Quasar really sucked big time..I had one some time ago and I tried to get some big sounds out of it...didn't work. The filters were very flat and the FX were useless..as was this machine itself.I was so pissed off with the Quasar, I traded it after 1 week for a JV1080..this was the best choice I made in a long time...The Roland is very programmable with great filters and sounds...I didn't try the Technox but I don't need to now...

TECHNOX Rules !
It is simply because you do not know how to program a synth that you say Technox sucks ... It's great for ambient, strange pads and all ...
A space machine ! Man ! A machine for space trip ...

Personally I abused my Quasar till it made me ill so much was I impressed by the rave timbres. And thanks to my PC I have now transferred these classic tracks I wrote while in my rave days into preview & full mp3 files.
As I had the expansion boards as well, you should get a good idea of what it sounded like. Me personally I would have given it 10 out of 10 when I brought it, as the alternatives were beyond my financial status; how I wish I had never sold it, now that my PC could sort out the problems of thin sounds.
Ohh it cost £999 when I got my module and about £200 each for the two expansion cards (never did find the sample expansion card) and as for live performance, what a blessing allowing users to turn of single keys (avoid silly double hits when playing a bass kick) as well as allowing you to define regions on the keyboard (a must for serious live performance)

I still love my TechnoX and recently found an old CD I made with mainly TechnoX only music on it. Sadly, something has gone wrong with the sounds and it plays the same high pitched noise regardless of patch or MIDI channel. Does anyone know how or where to get it repaired?

This is an excellent synth module if you're just starting out. Combined with a
sequencer and a drum machine (or sampler), you can pretty much start making
tracks. It has basses/leads/organs/ and the "mentasm" sounds familiar to
Techno and House heads.
