Alesis NANOBASS
Alesis Started the Nano-range, at least in unit construction, with the old Micro-verbs 1 & 2.......Small 3-to-a rack-width units targeting the bottom of the home studio market.... Having said that, around the time the first Micro-verb was released, If you didn't have the luxury of working with really expensive shit like the Yamah Rev-1 ro Rev-7, Lexicon, AMS etc, and if you'd previuosly been working with Plate or Spring reverb, these little babies knocked you out of your seat !!.... Bloody amazing, and I have to say they pissed on most larger mid-priced digital reverb units... The revolution was born.Well, since then, Alesis have released a whole bunch of these funny little units, and they may look mickey-mouse, but they are wicked value for money....... The small unit sized range now includes the Nano-Verb.... Nano-Synth....Nano-Piano....Nano-Compressor and the Nano-Bass... all excellent value for the dosh....
I guess I'm just fishing for some text here, cos I have neither tried or heard this Nano-Bass, but there's a few key units missing from the 'SYNTH' Section here at Dance-Tech, so I decided to paste up the spec's, and any info, editirs etc I can glean, and then leave you lot to add the comments until such time as I can get to use one, and get an audio demo added.....(hey...I work y'know !!)
So here's the basic lowdown.
The Nanobass is a dedicated bass-sound module, the only other one I know of is the Peavey unit, so there ain't alot of chioce if a dedicated bass sound module is on your shopping list......
The Nanobass is a max 64 note poly if the sound is utilising one layer/voice....then 32 note with 2 layers, and 16 with a 4 layer sound.
It contains 4 mb's of rom sounds....264 in total all 16 bit 48 k samples......The sounds are devided into 16 banks of 16 patches, with names like 'Acoustic/fretless'....'Rap'....'House' etc etc.....so you get a cool palette
You can edit the sounds, but you need to utilise heavey duty sysex protocaol to do so. If you're into this, then the editing offers similar to the QS synth range, with each layer or voice offering Oscillator waveform choice, sweep lo-pass filter, 3 envelope generators, 3 LFO's, and an FX section with 4 seperate FX busses...(stereo FX)......But according to the SOS review, the manual supplied sysex dat aint comprehensive enuff to get to it in full, and you'll also need a librarian of some type, cos there's no user storage....But hey.....whaddya want for 250 quid !!......The whole point of this box, is that you can speedily dial up all those bass sounds that you hear on all your favourite tracks...and all those sounds that have become standard for various styles.....there's also lots of acoustic, fretless etc which may be usefull to you with the current move in fretless & jazz double bass etc for Jungle basslines....
Alot of the presets are layered, and respond to varoius stuff like velocity to filter or X-fade between layers, and filter control via wheels etc......plus of course, there's the FX to add extra icing to sounds.....I should add that each dialed preset does offer one adjustable perameter via the front panel 'ADJUST' knob...this may be mapped to Attack,Decay, Brightness, Sub Octave level etc....
Anyhow......I'll try to get a demo model, or at least a demo Cd or DAT to format to RA for you to hear...Until then, here's the spec's, and if you own one....please add comments....as much as you like !!.........L8ers......

I purchased a NanoBass. When I got it home I found out that it does not comply with the MIDI specification. All notes are 1 octave lower than they should be according to the MIDI spec. Alesis customer service told me I had to reprogram my stuff at my end. That's not convenient in my application.
The sounds are fine, but the programming is wrong, so I'm going to return the unit.
Alesis, if you're listening, you should fix this product.

er...... maybe that's cause it's a ...'Bass' module ??....... like maybe they thought they'd bung it an octave down.... or is it that you're using a sequencer s/w..... some of the sequencer softs call c-1, c-3.....weird...... still, if all you had to do was transpose your bass track up an octave, is this such a big deal that you had to demand a refund ?

I just bought the unit, and I tell you what. it kicks, Its got the BASS! Its time to show all the scrubs around where I live and their big ass overpriced stereo systems what its all about. Who cares if its an octave down than what it should be, that just means more BASS.
Im gonna put support for it on my page.

Very Very cool piece for the money. Not a lot of programability, but fantastic for demos. Sounds really smooth, punchy, brash, etc. when you need it. Try stomp boxes or other processing for techno and house tracks. On Divers scale (1-10): Overall: 3.5
