Evolution EVS-1

Good little analogue widdly midi box, 16 part multitimbrel (plays 16 sounds at once) Trouble is, you can't edit the sod without a software editor (PC, ST, MAC)...Having said that, it's probably preferable to the MENSA tests that charade as editing facilities on other synths. People always sell em with the editor tho.....A versatile little box for sure, and extremely cheap.!!

The EVS-1... additive synthesis I beleive.... that is....where most subtractive synths use filters to subtract from the sound, additive synthesis units introduce new artefacts & harmonics to the sound... another additive synth is the Kawia 5000 jobbie....

So all in all, with an editor, (see the link), it is a very cheap unit to get into for some different sounds.....

the EVS-1....... User comments please.....

A very cheap synth indeed. Sounds pretty cheap too. The editor is useless, unless you run DOS or Atari. Only 20 out of 100 patches are editable anyway. Service of Evolution UK is pretty crap. I ordered a manual, and it cost me 10 pounds! For 30 pages of fresh-out-of-the-printer paper.

Oh well, as I said, it's a cheap synth. Only recommended for Midi newbies with small budget.

i had one.it broke after one month.it sounds like nothing and the presets suck bigtime.no power,no usefull features, but when one reads the manual you think you bought a pricewinner.this synth is just to weird for words.if the evs dudes would have put the effort to make it better(and worth twice as much money) it would not even been that bad.when it comes to editing i felt like a baby being presented a dx7 as a kind of my first sony.Completely complicated and not worth the effort.sorry guys at evs...you should have called me for better use of research costs...

Time for a positive comment! :-) I bought mine a few years back for a ton, which at the time was okay I guess. Now, it's a very strange sounding little box... but... I like that! What I will say is this; most of the presets work best when you layer them with something from another synth. It has a very unusual sound and when I'm looking for something really whacky I'll always give it a try. One real downer is the MIDI - it's very unstable regarding patch change and stuff. I have it in a chain with 2 other instruments and the moment you send patch information to them, regardless of channel, you can forget whatever you had set on the EVS-1. Anyway, all this being said I consider it a good addition to my set-up and I'm glad I got it. For weird sounds it's a winner.

This was my first multi-timbral synth I bought. Why? It was cheap! My first productions contained about 80% of this synth. Now I got a few synths more, it slowly fades away in the background. But there is still one patch ("Ethereal") which can't be beaten by any synth I know.

I got one new about 11 years ago. 10 years ago it lost its memory so will not save any multitimbral set ups once it is switched off. But.......there are some really great sounds on there. Juno-y basses & pads & Oberheim-y brass but with a digital grain like the Casio CZ's. The drums are probably nicked from a TR707 or 505 but with some extra dirt.....probably very usable in a retro-crappy 80's way. I've kept it because I reckon e-magic's soundiver might make it usable again.

What a piece of JUNK! Why bother? You want a good synthesizer, try the Dopfer, synthesizers(dot)com, Blacet, MOTM etc I've used all these, and a good brace of vintage equipment (Arp, Moog, EMS, EML...etc) the Evolution EVS-1 is a bad toy compared to any of these. This wasn't even fun enough to keep the interest of a 7 yr old..my drummer's daughter got it as a gag gift...she likes her Casio better!

Oh Martin, aren't you being a little harsh? I bought one of these back in 1990 and love it to death, it's all part of the creative process. Back then I just had an Alesis MicroVerb (which I still adore), and it did some terrific processing, it's all part of the fun. It doesn't have to sound raw, and as Sandy mentioned above, layered, it's a very impressive little weirdo indeed. Anyways, it's not the equipment that makes the tune, it's the writer, the creativity to apply and use whatever is at hand, and to carry it off with originality. Long live creativity I say, throw any tool at me and I'll use it!

I bought one of these in the early 90's. I loved the FM sounds. After two house moves I lost track of it and recently found it in the loft. I started using it again and it brings back good memories. Too many negative comments above. As cre8tiv said, "it's not the equipment that makes the tune, it's the writer".Easy enough to use and does the trick for me.I've lost the editing software though. Does anyone know where I can get a copy for my P.C?

Hi EVS users.
About 7 years back someone gave me the EVS 1 with a small, very cheap,
Evolution keyboard [MK10]to tie me over till I got a proper set up. I
never really used it because the keyboard is not touch sensitive and I
assumed the module wasn't either. Is this not the case?

I never completed my basic set up but now because of my daughter I am
looking into buying a controller [M Audio Axiom 61] and a sound module
[Proteus 2000] for when my daughter or I just want to rehearse but don't
want to use my PC.
It will be great to know there's one piece of kit I don't have to buy
unless I want to.

Anyone who disses this synth is a preset merchant and wants to press a button and have great sounds-This is a constant source of brilliant sounds, unusual and dirty.I love this synthesiser and if you are prepared to put some effort in it will amaze. In the right hands this is supreme,in the 'lets all moan about a synth' brigades hands it will fail because they just want to play the same presets every other a is using.
Great machine.

I commented on the EVS1 in 2010 and asked if anyone had a list of the sounds as I had lost mine. I had a reply from someone who kindly sent me the list but unfortunately my computer has given up the ghost and I can't get at the e-mail to see the sounds (stupid, I know 'cos I should have saved them to disc). I can't recall the person who replied to my request but if they, or anyone else, sees this and has a list of the sounds I would be really grateful if they could forward them to me.
Thank you,
Brenton.

On the surface and to those who never put any effort in to anything the evs-
1 seems like a lame duck. Why? well 100 presets which are ok and 20 user
store areas for your own creations. The only problems is to make your own
sounds you need an editor and this is where the negative bullshit on the
web comes form about this synth.
The EVS-1 is awesome. It can sound analogue and big and ballsy and then it
can sound digital and cold and abstract. To get good sounds you have to
put a little effort in - I know this is a lot to ask in todays age of ppl calling
themselves electronic music produces when all they do is hoard presets
made by other ppl, but put some f##king effort in effort in and getting an
editor and getting under the hood of this synth and then tell me it is a load
of junk. This synth is like an insane digital modular that can make nearly any
sound you want. Anything from hard dance/edm sounds to beautiful drifting
pads, ambient sounds, weird digital glitch machine sounds, big fat shake
the floor subs, house bass, detroit stabs, Boards of Canada drones and
weird sounds...you name it this synth can do it. Anyone that says this synth
is junk needs to put some effort in and get under the hood of it.
