Ensoniq ASR

Category:  Products / samplers / ensoniq samplers

New price: discontinued  |   S/H price: S/H.....ASR-10 or rack £ 700-800

Ensoniq ASR

Moving on from the EPS series, the ASR's start to bring Ensoniq into the total workstation area, which eventually led to the table-top ASR-X unit.... the ASR sampler (Advanced Sampling Recorder) integrate sampling with synthesis, a proper sequencer, big-time FX, and even 2 track hard disk recording on up to a 5 gb scsi drive, and s/pdif digital 2-way transfer if you have the scsi version or option, or the optional s/pdif interface !!.......Above is the ASR keyboard & rack version images.......(need a nice image of the rack !!... anyone?)....

There are 3 units in the series (not including the ASR-X).... the ASR-10.... with a 61 note poly pressure sensitive keyboard.... the ASR rack, and the ASR-88, which comes with a 88 note keyboard, 16 MB RAM, SCSI and a CD-ROM drive (plus they were also sold with two free CD-ROM disks included).....Anyway.... this is one massive sampler spec-wise for their time....!!

The ASR range are 16 bit stereo or mono samplers coming with 2mb ram, and going up to a maximum of 16 mb ram, which is plenty.... you got stereo/mono sampling IN.... (with mic/line switchable, a gain trim, and led indicators), 8 outs on the rack... stereo out on the keyboard, with an optional extra 6 outs coming in the form of the OEX-6SR output expander.....

Sample rates and times (on 2mb) are: 20.5 sec @ 44.1 kHz mono....... 10.3 sec @ 44.1 kHz stereo..... 30.3 sec @ 29.76 kHz mono....... 15.2 sec @ 29.76 kHz stereo.....

When expanded to 16mb, you get: 183 sec (3 minutes) @ 44.1 kHz mono..... 91.5 sec (1.5 minutes) @ 44.1 kHz stereo....... 271.4 sec(4.5 minutes) @ 29.76 kHz mono.....and 135.7 sec (2.3 minutes) @ 29.76 kHz stereo.....

the ASR's are 20 note poly when you use top sample rate of 44.1K.....and 31 voice at 30K rates....

The sampled sounds can be further treated with a synthesis section, and FX..... At the time of release, the ASR had the most powerful effects processor available in a sampler, with 62 effects algorithms taken from their DP/4 fx unit.... You can sample through the effects section to add FX as you sample, such as compression etc..... You can also resample a sound several times through different effects, to create a multi-FX'd raw sample.... You can even process external audio through the ASR's inputs, and this can be done while you play live or play back sequences..... this could be very useful for gigs....

The signal processing commands include:.....WaveSample copy, truncate, mix, merge, splice, reverse, scale..... convert sample rate (100 possible rates!!)...... volume smoothing....... gain normalize...... fade in/out...... synthesize loop....... 5 kinds of cross-fade loop, (with the ability to audition most of these edits)...... Time compression/expansion, (non-realtime), with compression down to 1/2, or expansion up to 2 1/2 times original length....... Sampling(stereo or mono) through the effects processor(as mentioned)..... and re-sampling in real-time, (stereo or mono....also through the effects processor) of notes played either live, on the keyboard, played by the sequencer, or received via MIDI !!....

You also get a comprehensive onboard sequencer....... the ASR's 16-track sequencer provides real time and looped recording modes, 96 PPQ clock resolution, an auto-locate function etc etc..... so not a crappy scratch-pad sequencer......

Now..... as far as the structure goes, each 'Instrument' can have up to 127 samples.... and each sample can have the following processing:

2 independent multi-mode dynamic digital filters (low pass, high pass, variable bandwidth band pass)......
pitch, filter and amplitude envelopes,(5-stages with 21 parameters per envelope), with velocity interpolation between Soft and Hard Envelope levels .......
1 LFO (selectable waveforms) with delay.... Variable rate random Noise generator for modulation.......
15 modulation sources routable to pitch, filter cutoff, volume, pan, loop start/end/position, sample start, LFO depth or rate, and all effects parameters....

Each sample can be individually panned and assigned to one of 3 stereo busses, or 6 busses with the optional OEX-6sr output expander....and that is no way the full list !!.....it does more !!!.....

There is a big library available, plus plenty of user stuff.... (there's utilities for web transfer of samples, and .wav convertions etc... plus, the EPS series also read Akai S-1000/1100 and Roland CD-ROM's via scsi(dunno if it'll read disks too??.....but, it also reads programming and performance parameters along with the raw sample(s).....

Well....... What a machine !!.... bloody amazing specs !!.... not a massive memory by todays mega-sampler standards (unless you include the h/d option), but a serious bit of kit mate !!......Lets have some user comments please....

Love it or leave it alone. I've owned one since they came out in '91 and can say it's the best investment I ever made. But you first gotta build your skills before you attempt to pump out that next level neck braking 'ish, but if you're not into building your skills, go get the "MPC". All the heads usin' 'em beats sound to much alike. So go out there and comp an ASR-10 and tell 'em I sent ya!!! And be on the look out for my ASR-10 Skill Building manual, aimed at the upcoming producers wanting the info that'll take you to the next level on the ASR-10. It'll give the info you didn't want read in the manual -I know how we get down- and how to apply it to add that Boom-Bap to your wack tracks.

I will never part with my ASR rack. Incredible machine for it's time. No, it isn't an E4 ultra, but for around $800US you can get one with 16 megs and SCSI. The sequencer is very similar to an Alesis MMT8, but the machine does not liker to be edited on much while it is synced to MIDI, it'll crash on ya every time.

THE ASR RACK IS ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE UNITS I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. NOTHING IS AS USER FRIENDLY. THE SEQUENCER COULD HAVE A BETTER CLOCK BUT HEY, ISN'T THAT WHAT THOSE MIDI CABLES ARE FOR? IF YOU WANT GOOD EFFECTS AND THE ABILITY TO NOT SOUND LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE WHO USES AKAI MPCS, YOU NEED THIS MACHINE. IT IS ESPECIALLY DOPE FOR HIP HOP AND REAL GRITTY BREAK BEATS.

I bought an asr-10 5 years ago.At the begining i was irritated from the lack
of resonant filters but after getting
the waveboy effect everything was fine.
The synthesis abilities are huge
and i've tweaked the hell out of it.
If you want reliability and a reasonable price buy one. There are alot of renowned artists that have used it for years.IT SIMPLY ROCKS.

Yep i agree a great peice of kit

What i love about it is .. the no nonesense OS and navigation
I now use a Korg triton with its LCD touch screen .. but i cant get around it
as fast i can on my ASR-10 which sits back home due to its weight

i use with HD .( the only way ) and its fast .. and you can load banks in a 4 seconds or so .. which is nice..

the sound is not as Hi-Fi as some samplers around but totally recognizeable
i think the sound is way fatter than my Korg for some reason ..
and i like the filters better ..

the best you could get for the time .. and still stands up today ..
does a killer b3 with its distortion FX ..

the sequencer was always a bit buggy but its that quirky stuff that i like :)

all in all .. great sound .. fast to use .. small learning curve but once u got it
you can zoom around like no other machine...

small memory but .. who cares.. unless u wanna sample 10 min drum solos
( use your PC)

nice!

Superb and built like a tank!
It was hard to first get used to because I am a pro with my Akai MPC2000XL.
After awhile, even without the manual, I figured it out. There are lots of menus and you can get lost on them but that is just half of the fun. Just make sure you save what ever you do!

The only bad things I can say about my ASR is that it doesn't have the SCSI card for the port. These are hard to find and if you do find them they go for $350- $450.
Also booting and saving to floppy is a pain. So used to my MPC card reader that I am spoiled by it. Oh yeah... and time stretch is a chore. Depending on your sample, you can wait up to 4 minutes and it ends up sounding like crap.
But hey... it's a 14 year old sampler!

If you buy one, make sure it has:
16 Mb memory,
a working floppy drive,
SCSI card connector,
Digital Card (the digital connections comes standard and are on the back of the unit but you actually need the card to able to use it. wtf Ensoniq?),
and make sure you have the latest OS 3.53 & 1.5 firmware.
