Yup... plug it in as an insert fx in VST mixer and it appears for selection as a VSTi for triggering with it's own sequenceer track/pattern!!.... Brilliant, but sadly doesn't work with Logic audio 4.7... however, you CAN access it's controls via midi controllers in Logic 5 which are ready to go when you insert it and switch ON 'Track Automatiom' - so no worries there, I can't see any logic user NOT upgrading to V5, so we are saved and CAN use this excellent freeware now too!...... Here's the Hybridalien site blurb...

'midiGate is a FREEWARE plugin for Cubase VST. It recreates ducking/gating effects so popular in dance music. Does away with the hassle of using an external noise gate and having to find the right audio source to use as a trigger. It's also useful when you've got a keyboard like my EX5, whose MIDI volume response time just ain't fast enough for gating.

The effect sounds great on pads and vocals but also has uses on bass and percussive tracks.'
