RME DIGI9652 Project Hammerfall

RME DIGI9652 Project Hammerfall - 52 Channel 24 Bit 96 kHz Digital Audio Multitrack System...

I'm adding it into the DT listings because at the RME site it is quite hard to see what connects to what in their jumbled series of catalog... descriptions are poor, so I thought I'd start to add RME items to DT in plain-english 'moron-speak' (my level)... so i and other can see what their bit's do, and what connects to what... this isn't a review, more a translation althought yes, i'd lurve to get my paws on their kit... it's a tad pricier than your cheaper stuff :)

The 'DIGI9652 Project Hammerfall' comes with NO analog inputs or outputs, and it has no midi connections. all connectors are digital, and extra add-on boards are required to get analog i/o.

So.... each soundcard manufacturer usualy has a one or two main 'pro' cards... and they usualy bolt-on to a selection of outboard i/o racks & modules or offer adat & t/dif (tascam) connection for use with recorders or digital mixers etc.

Now in RME's range of gear, the 'DIGI9652 Project Hammerfall' is their main full-everything added 24/96 card... They also do the 'Hammerfall Light', which is a cut down version... Well, 'cut down', in that simply the extra adat expansion 'add-on' doesn't come included with the 'Hammerfall Light'.

So this card is the 'DIGI9652 Project Hammerfall - 52 Channel' - which means...

3 x adat i/o (each adat = 8 channels i/o)
total adat = 24 in / 24 out = 48 channels
s/pdif = i/o x 2 = 4 channels

24 adat inputs/outputs x 2 + 4 x s/pdif = 52 channels.

Hence they call it the '9652', cos it goes up to 96k for recording & playback and has 52 channels of total dedicated i/o's possible connections.

This sort of card would be useful for those with large digital mixers & multitrack systems such as yamaha O3D etc... the mixer connects directly to the pc/recording s/w... a full 24 channels of record & 24 of playback....

What about if i want analog inputs??

Good question... RME supply add-on analog boards/cards which do NOT plug into a PC slot, but simply occupy a PC case 'slot-space' to locate themselves.. using the pci plate screw to bolt the card/s down to the pc case. - The cards feature externaly facing analog connectors on 1/4" sockets which connect internaly, inside the pc/mac to the adat connections/streams of the Hammerfall card, bringing the analog In's or OUT's in via the adat feeds... So if you added a single AEB8-O, 8 OUT analog board to the 'Project Hammerfall', it would use up 1 ADAT input (8 channels) on the card, etc.

So there is a 4 input card & 4 output card... they are seperate... and there is an 8 input card and 8 output card, again, seperate... this allows you to have say 4 inputs, but 16 outputs where lots of analog outs are required but only a few analog inputs... or for a bigger s/w monitoring or simultaneous multi-track record situation, 8 inputs are capable (max) using one of the Project Hammerfall's internal ADAT connections.

The analog expansion i/o cards/boards (AEB) are:

  • AEB4-I - 4 analog input card
  • AEB4-O - 4 analog output card
  • AEB8-I - 8 analog input card
  • AEB8-O - 8 analog output card

AEB4-I - 4 analog input card

The AEB4-I (Analog Expansion Board) adds 4 analog inputs in professional quality to all ADAT capable cards of the DIGI96 series. Level adjustment +4 dBu/-10 dBV, 107 dBA SNR and a servo balanced input circuit deliver perfect sound and sonic clarity.

The AEB4-I is designed for maximum flexibility. Both stereo inputs 1/2 3/4 are automatically copied to channels 5/6 and 7/8. Installation is done in a convinient manner using the supplied bracket, or - as no contact to any slot on the motherboard is needed - at any place inside the computer. Nuts for all TRS jacks and a drilling template are included.

AEB4-O - 4 analog output card

"The AEB4-O (Analog Expansion Board) adds four analog outputs in professional quality to all ADAT capable cards of the DIGI96 series. Level adjustment +4 dBu/-10 dBV, 106 dBA SNR and a servo balanced output stage deliver perfect sound and sonic clarity."

The AEB4-O is designed for maximum flexibility. Jumpers allow to route channels 1/2 3/4 or 5/6 7/8 to the four analog outputs. Installation is done in a convinient manner using the supplied bracket, or - as no contact to any slot on the motherboard is needed - at any place inside the computer. Nuts for all TRS jacks and a drilling template are included.

AEB8-I - 8 analog input card

"The AEB8-I offers 8 inputs with 4 stereo TRS jacks. Usual insert cable can be used to split the connectors from stereo jack to mono jacks. Level adjustment +4 dBu/-10 dBV, 107 dBA SNR and highest suppression of PC-noise guarantee perfect sound quality."

AEB8-O - 8 analog output card

"The AEB8-O offers 8 outputs with 4 stereo TRS jacks. Usual insert cable can be used to split the connectors from stereo jack to mono jacks. It is also possible to drive up to 4 stereo headphones directly. Level adjustment +4 dBu/-10 dBV, 106 dBA SNR and highest suppression of PC-noise guarantee perfect sound quality."

Hope this makes the Hammerfall range a bit easier to understand... The above 4 analog expansion cards also connect to and work with the DIGI96 series of cards.
