m-audio 2044The 'DMAN' range are audio cards from Midiman and I decided to add all their cards to this one page so you can check out thier stuff, and get some feedback on the kit from any passing users who want to comment........
We've got five units in the audio card range, (Dman make loads of other kit from digital patchbays to midi boxes) and they are looking pretty good, although up against stiff competition from many other cards, some with samplers or synths also built in.......For example, from the Terratec & Pinnacle, Event card range etc in the higher 4 output price bracket......
Dman seem to have a fairly cool reputation tho for a quality bit of kit....... German engineering & design......and attention to detail.....I never used a Dman card, but never heard one slated or noticed any comments at newsgroups about problems as far as I can remember.......anyway, we'll see what any posted comments add to the picture.......
Next up in their range of analog cards from the straight stereo 'Dman' card, is a 4 input/output card entitled 'DMAN 2044'.....Not out yet, but should be shipping in November '98 .... The 2044 offers higher than mini-jack quality, with stuff like having 99 db of dynamic range, or decent 1/4 inch connectors on a breakout cable........ There's a few other interesting features claimed, like an independant and programmable pan, tremelo, vibrato and filtering for each channel out..... plus it says in the blurb that it's got a dsp chip capable of performing FX, although it isn't made clear whether anyone's software can address it, or what ??.......huh ??......well ??..... anyone got feedback please ?
Anyway, seems lie good stuff, an of course we are going up-price to a recommended price of around $350......now, that seems like the most interesting product so far, as it's a very cheap 4 output solution, yet you also get 4 inputs, and it's all full-duplex...... Now whether your software can support 4 simultaneous record channels is another thing, but most of the latest version midi & hard disk soft's now support theoretically, most multiple out cards with windows drivers, although, we know in practice (groan.....c'mon, all together......MANUFACTURERS.... GET TOGETHER AND FORM A STANDARD FOR PC AUDIO DRIVER......politics over!!)...... this doesn't always happen....
Anyhow, it's interesting, cos if it's a shit-hot as is claimed in the literature, then it's coming in at about 50 quid less than a Darla..... now the Darla has 8 outs, so I guess it's tempting to go for 8 for the extra 50 money, however, maybe this card gives better, less noisey audio, plus there's the channel FX & DSP on offer here as well... I cant judge that.........but....
the other point is........ for dance, 4 out's is plenty even for multi vocal hip-hop or R&B tracks...... With hard disk, you can mix stuff alot, then if you want, go to 4 out's for external reverb, mixing and other fx.... in the long run, i think that a small mixer with a couple of outboard FX is a far better long term solution for creativity, and cost effectiveness, than constantly stressing out your eyes and the pc with software based fx....... anyway the point I'm trying to make is, if you're on a tight budget, then that 50 -100 quid or whatever Dollars difference can get half a software programme or whatever....... or you could option for combining say a Terratec EWS sampler/synth/soundcard, with one of these Dman babies, and keep the Terratec's outs free for the sampler & synth, then add 4 seperate audio hard disk out's from something like this Dman, and there's a wicked system for about $850 or £ 750 at mid-shop price level including your s/ware.....Another use would be where you want to run 2 sync'd s/w programmes, like say rebirth with another programme, in which case this card can allocate a stereo pair to each programme... no more occupied audio drivers to mess with.............Anyways....add a secondhand mixer to that, a cheap secondhand seperate delay and a multi-fx for reverb and all the rest.....and there's a wicked core system for about another 300-500 quid with dedicated outboard mixing......
Anyhow, there's a good looking card to fill that 4 output slot nicely.......the 2044........we just need some details about the channel FX etc.....
