Hoontech DSP2496 + ADC&DAC2000

About a year ago around the www there was talk & murmurings about the 'Hoontech' audio PC hardware, so I decided to check it out and discovered that their site was a terrible designed mish-mash of 'multiple configurations' with so much emphasis on 'mix & match' permeatations that it was impossible without serious investigation & logical deductions and THEN calling the distributors to actualy work out quite WHAT they sold as sets & what the hell was what & worked with what for what!!! - For example, they USED to name one product the 'Digital XG' even tho it had NO XG chip in it at all but merely COULD be added to their XG equipt cheap soundcard!!... but it also was sold with the same erroneously confusing title as an associated part of other packages... (well, confusing to a moron like me anyways!) eek!!...

Well, a year on Hoontech have taken advice, and the site is now VERY nice and clear & tidied up... and the STAR product you & I are interested in is the awesome AUDIO_DSP2496 + ADC&DAC2000 19" rack package !!... I had to add the Hoontech back into my PC tonight after spending a few months with a Midiman Audiophile for testing Logic, and found myself falling in love with the Hoontech all over again!...IT'S JUST SO DAMNED GOOD!!... on top of that they have new drivers and updated applets which I downloaded... I then realised that in all the chaos of last year we hadn't added this EXCELLENT package to the site listings... So.. It's an established product now and thus this aint gonna be a massive in-depth review page cos here's planty of Hoontech ADSP2496 system info round about on the web, I'll keep it short and relevent to what you need to know..... but what you need to know is this:

For VST & other ASIO.2 s/w's this is the best package with the most bang for the buck you can get - PERIOD!!!

And it just got better!!.. cos the new drivers DO seem smoother... The package/system comes in 3 parts with all the I/O options you need right out of the box.

THE PACKAGE

THE AUDIO DSP2496 CARD: - a 24/96 card with mini-jack sockets which function in this system package as 'monitor' In/Out & mic (we dont use that), and it has a connector board for digital i/o... AND.. analog CD play support so often lacking on decent studio hardware... Hurrah!!.. OH!.. and it's got AES/EBU clock I/O too beleive it or not!

The S/PDIF Plate: - (XG-DB I = 'digital expansion daughter board bracket') - This is NOT a card, but simply a plate like a chromed PCI slot blanking plate which bolts into any spare slot and connects to the main DSP card with a connector. It has analog s/pdif (gold) and optical connectors too!

The DAC&DAC-2000 Rack unit: - This is a 'built-like-a-tank', 'You could literaly drive over it on your bike', steel plate, 19.5" standard rack size case with:

  • 8 X analog unbalanced 1/4" jack IN's - 8 X unbalanced 1/4" jack OUT's
  • 2 X XLR Balanced master analog OUT's (parallel with analog OUT 1 & 2 un-balanced)
  • 2 X Balanced XLR mic inputs with switchable phantom power, (works a treat with my Calrec!!), & each with it's own independent gain-trim pot.
  • A headphone socket with volume control.
  • 1 x midi IN - 2 X midi OUT (32 channels total) !!!

To cap it all this package is VERY cheap!!... and last year I bought one straight away to see what it was like, it turned out to be a hidden gem, and I started to tell people about it on the forums... consequently last year there was a lot of furor about it on this site & in the forums & if you can search on the forums for 'Hoontech' you'll find alot of info - Also lots of our readers bought one and all seem to be happy - I know I am !! - apparently a few months later it became to top selling audio PC device at Thomann, Europes largest music-kit retailer, and since then many pc-audio mags etc have picked up on it and handed out awards too!

The unit is QUIET... and gives excellent ASIO performance with VST instruments all playable in realtime with an 8ms latency at 44.1khz setting - (up it to 96k and get 3MS latency if you need ultrafast response) - This low latency also means that you CAN add VST 'additive' effects such as Reverbs, delays, chorus's etc - You CAN also add eq to live audio inputs as long as there's not TOO much stress on the PC (depending on PC power this figure varies). So 'additive' realtime FX are fine, realtime EQ's are fine too depending on PC power & loading, and like most systems with this standard ASIO latency, adding 'INSERT' type s/w FX like compressors & gates isn't too successful, but that's not a bad reflection on Hoontech, because the same for all audio hardware without DSp FX as it goes... We didn't really reach the point imho with PC in-box recording where realtime 'INSERT' fx which require alot of number crunching can be fast enuff to be reliable.

Hoontech's website promo blurb says this of the package:

"This makes the package a completely self-contained, fully featured hardware interface for all aspects of home studio recording. With the included Logic SoundTrack 24 software package from Emagic, this solution is the perfect place to begin building your studio.

Because the DSP24 with ADC&DAC2000 is an integrated system featuring both hardware and software, there is no need for concern over compatibility issues. Everything has been designed and tested as a complete solution."

Ok... whether the freebie Emagic s/w is of use is debatable for you, I think it's just an audio multitrack (anyone?), but it's cool for newbies I guess & as a freebie... The main point is they are truthful about this packages ability... this is what you CAN do with this DSP2496 + ADC/DAC_2000 package in a few home-studio scenario's:

  • With just a PC & master keyboard device: - you can play realtime VSTi drums & synths & Logic s/w instruments etc to compose and laydown the midi from your master keyboard as you play the keys & listen to the VSTi & Logic Instruments playing via the Rack out's or Rack headphone socket in realtime...

You can use the mic' socket/s for your mic'/s to record audio mic' parts, and use the headphone socket to monitor what you're doing when you record audio to avoid spillage from speakers. As you add vocals etc with a mic', you can add realtime s/w 'ADDITIVE' FX like reverbs & delays & even insert Eq's etc onto the realtime monitoring mic input which you hear on your voice/instruments as you sing/play... listening again, either via the Rack OUT's or via the Rack Headphone OUT... I couldn't get realtime Fx to work with Logic on incoming audio streams tho sadly.

You can mix down you audio & s/w instrument compositions with your monitors (speakers/amp) from the Rack-Unit's master balanced OUT's on the rack for prestine audio if you like, or mixdown in cans using the Rack's headphone socket...

You can also add your outboard keyboard audio out's into the MIX with any of the Hoontech Rack's inputs. - Added inputted external synths etc appear alongside your s/w synth's & audio mix channels on the VST or Logic mixer for mixing in realtime as the midi in the sequencer plays them !!.. You CAN do this too in Logic, but as i say, Logic doesn't seem to want to add REALTIME s/w FX to incoming AUDIO streams... so you CAN have your external keyboard in the Logic mix, alongside your audio & s/w instruments just like in VST, but to get FX on it you'll have to use your extenal synth built-in FX it seems...

So you can see with ONLY a master keyboard, some headphones & VST or Logic you can create finished tracks with some s/w instruments !!... sorted!

  • With a PC & outboard gear, but NO mixer: - as above, your outboard synth/s & sampler etc can be routed LIVE into the VST or Logic s/w 'synth & audio' internal mix and have realtime fx added to allow you to mix your hardware outboard gear in with compositions up to a max of 8 inputs!!.. add TWO hoontech packages and get 16 quality inputs all appearing on the VST or Logic mixer. - Great for limited outboard setups & space-saving, cos you DON'T need a mixer!! - ANY audio input can be quickly recorded as a file too as all your incoming outboard instruments are already routed to tracks... just arm the track/channel in your s/w and record. Monitor the whole outboard & internal mix via the rack cans socket or again the XLR balanced outs to a monitor chain....

  • With a PC, hardware mixer & some outboard hardware gear: as in example above... you can play & create your composition with a mix of realtime VSTi's Logic instruments & your hardware instruments... Mix on the hardware mixer with your hardware kit in an outboard mix & blend into that mix ANY of the possible 8 Hoontech ADC/DAC_2000 rack OUT's.

Hardwire your 8 mixer subgroups to the Hoontech rack's 8 analog IN's with a loom, and route combinations of outboard mixer channels down to your sub's to record into VST/Logic audio tracks on any of the 8 possible Hoontech inputs/sub's... Just like having a digital 8 track !!... (well it is a digital 8 track in the sense of 8 inputs being the max), but you CAN have as many audio tracks as your PC can handle of course!... simply mix multiple VST/Logic s/w mixer channels with audio &/or instruments down to your VST/Logic s/w mixer SUB' Out's, and those route OUT to your hardware mixer outboard mix via the 8 Hoontech OUT's. - mix & match !!

In all the above scenarious you are free to finaly mixdown to your DAT etc via the S/PDIF OUT's of course, you can also use the same S/PDIF section IN's to re-import mixes saved to external devices for mastering etc etc.. a complete system in a box basicaly for every possible home & project studio need!!... and less than 300 quid !!!!!!

So all in all, you can see just how versatile this system is... It works best with ASIO/ASIO2 proper compatible s/w's cos SADLY they DON'T have EASI Logic drivers for this (rats!!!)... It might just be a problem with Logic, but try as I might i couldn't get REALTIME s/w fx to work on incoming audio streams as noted.. but that might be a glitch or me being dumb...I'm sure it used to work last time I had the Hoontech in the box...

Logic-Audio 4.7 works pretty well with it's ASIO converter layer to some extent then, and 'as well' as your particular Logic-Audio version's ASIO support gives, but you should be at 4.7 anyways.... For example with the Hoontech you CAN play the Logic superb s/w instruments in realtime, and I mean realtime!!... With some added Silververb or Goldverb etc you get a real lush electric piano experience with Logic's superb 88 note suitcase piano when you play, and the same goes with the ES synth or EX sampler or VSTi's which do work in Logic 4.7 very well!!... all work fine, just as good as VSTi's in VST....

Here's an image of the ASIO setup in LOGIC working fine and you get 7-8 MS latency lowest @ 44.1 recording/settings...

Remember you can go higher to 48k or 96k and the latency drops but you add more stress to the PC bus load shifting higher/bigger data amounts whilst playing...

The only drawback as I say, is you can't seem to get realtime FX on incoming EXTERNAL audio streams such as mic's etc... So Logic 4.7 with the AUDIO_DSP2496 ??.... it's not too bad in my tests.. in fact it works for everything else JUST as efficiently as VST!... and IF you are a studio owner with some external FX you can add to your audio record monitoring while to do your takes, then the Hoontech would STILL be an EXCELLENT budget but QUALITY choice for you... but to be honest for the best LOGIC working, if you need to get realtime additive FX on your audio input recordings you should go for a hardware device with proper EASI Logic drivers such as Midiman Delta series until Logic_5 comes out and we see if they have remedied this which seems unreliable in Logic even with the midiman & EASI to be frank, I've never managed to get successful 'realtime' fx addition to INcoming monitored audio streams in the Logic mixer with any card..

As for routing the in's & outs of the s/w audio media streams, you get this nifty little routing applet which allows you to patch 'cables' from the External rack etc to and from locations to setup various configurations and save them for quick loading to do different jobs...

So for example you can setup to do the following:

  • Route ALL or some Rack IN's to the s/w channels in your VST or LOGIC mixer etc to get up to 8 record inputs monitoring THRU the s/w at the Rack's output or rack headphone output via VST or LOGIC's mixer/fx.

  • By patching directly across from Rack IN to Rack OUT on the applet, you can patch the Rack Inputs directly to the Output's and use the rack & your PC like a conventional multitrack setup!.. anything you plug IN to the rack appears on your hardware mixer via the corresponsing rack OUT, and when you hit record you take a 'sniff' from the INPUT to grab a 'take' to your corresponding assigned s/w record track which plays back instantly on PLAY when the VST/Logic channel is flipped OUT of Input monitoring status!! - Just like your old 8 track except of course you have MORE than 8 tracks in your PC software, the limitation is you get only 8 total physical out's !!.. It really is a well thought out setup & I beleive that RIDI in Germany may have been responsible for the applet & driver programming, so that's german engineering for you eh!.. phew!...

    APPLET MIXERS

Other applets with the setup include this EXTERNAL MIXER which can control all the master settings & levels for your IN's and OUT's external (rack & S/Pdif).... It works in conjunction with the Routing/Patching applet...

In this setup, I'm ONLY using the MIC' inputs (which default to share the Rack IN 1 & 2 streams with the Rack Line IN's 1 & 2, so If you need to use the Rack Mic' IN's you gotta unplug any connectors from the Rack Line-IN's 1 & 2)... Because I'm using two MONO mic's into Logic, you can see I pan these both to the CENTER so they are both optimised for recording as two MONO inputs. Over in Logic (or VST etc) I can then choose either of the two Mic' IN's and they are both optimised as Mono inputs... For a stereo mic' setup I'd keep them panned hard L/R and put Logic's record track into stereo mode !!.. easy huh!... if you get one you'll learn it in no time with some experimentation!

Also you get this nifty INTERNAL MIXER which associates itself with your windows media mixer and looks after all your windows I/O settings, CD levels and the ADSP Card's minijack In & OUT's....

    OTHER STUFF

Other driver support is available including Windows 95/98/ME, 2000, ASIO 2.0 and Gigasampler GSIF.- So if you're a mad Gigasampler Don this bolts in as a great cheap high-quality 8 OUT device for your Giga workstation!!...

What else is there to say except that you can have up to 4 of these in one PC for a max 40 analog i/o !! - They also do an ADAT & T/DIF (TASCAM connector) box so you can use it with your 01V or ADAT or tascan device etc importing and exporting ADAT recorded audio into your PC for editing ar for a full-on s/w mix using the ADAT OUT's as your 8 outs or mixdown to master S/PDIF to DAt etc using two of the ADAT outs as your monitor OUT's.. VERY versatile !!...

So as you can see.. a GREAT product fullfilling evrything we need for any style of home studio use... and so so cheap without sacrificing quality!!.. I'd get in there quick what with all the upheaval's happening in Korea right now in case the supply suddenly get's cut-off !!..... One of the Guys from RIDI the German driver/distributor company called me up and apparently it SHOULD do realtime FX on audio IN streams ok.. so I must be doing something wrong.. I'll have to recheck that over the next few days as i re-investigate the DSP2496 & rack system.. the last time I had it installed on the box Logic was just switching to V3.5... anyways, I'll find out what I did wrong and post it up..

All things considered, Dancetech rates this product package as our: BEST EVER 'STAR BUY' ASIO AUDIO MULTI-I/O PC BUDGET DEVICE AWARD.

++STOP PRESS++ WDM drivers ARE under development currently at BETA stage, should be delivered in two months according to RIDI... and it DOES work with Cakewalk's new 'Echte Zuper-Software', SONAR !!! - I spent 4 hours tonight running it with SONAR's audio section panel: 'Always use MME' tick box UN-CHECKED!!!... so i dunno quite how it was addressing the kernel driver in win98, but...

Although i couldn't get realtime 'Input monitoring' for audio IN with it at low enuuf latency even tho the SONAR latency slider was fully left showing 8ms, (it sounded to be about 20ms-25ms, just too high for realtime 'additive FX'), but I COULD use the SONAR synths in realtime so they WERE running at 7-8ms, and with the playback buffers set to 8 it stopped any drop-outs totally, & worked so smooth and didnt crash or continualy drop out for the whole time or cause any prob's... It only dropped out & stopped playing if I opened another application whilst it was running or if I loaded a webpage.. (yup it was running all the time I was online too!!).. but just click START, and off it goes again!... NO CRASHES OR FREEZES at all...

Also the only 'glitches' I got was when i deleted any midi objects like notes or patterns, then it'd give a little split-second glitch and carry on... but it didn't STOP & drop-out at all when midi events were deleted, only if i asked the ram to load up something new in another application running simultaneously would it do that!... Adding & removing FX caused no glitches at all tho; minimising & re-opening to/from the Windows taskbar caused no glitches either... Most impressive considering it didn't have driver for SONAR & the 'Always use MME overide' was UNTICKED as mentioned!!!...

It REALLY has made SONAR come alive & and I'm haing alot of fun with it & even got a great track going with SONAR!!... SONAR with the DSP2496 package is now as stable as Logic or VST on my box !!....

(17/11/01) this combination system is now sold with a new package name: 'The STA C-Port system' - Hoontech have split their studio products off into a new product range called 'ST-AUDIO' or 'STA' for short and now the C-Port system provides the whole combination system here, but all in one product pakage/box where's before taking delivery of this combination system required multiple boxes.

The new 'C-Port' system is identical in spec's to this system here, but is re-badged and very good value at around £270-280 street in the UK... more evidence of Hoontech further streamlining & simplifying it's product range!

i was initially dissapointed with the output quality of the unit, although i found it reasonible and decent, then i got the right cable adapters (1/4" to rca for my amp) wich let me use the proper outs instead of the headphone out and OH MY GOD, the clarity is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better, this unit is second to none price/performance. 8 in 8 out 24/96 with virtually no latency when playing sw synths.. i even plugged a mic in and sang, adding reverb, and delay and eq and i could hear it IN REAL TIME WITHOUT PERCEPTIBLE LATENCY... it was awesome.. now, i do up the buffers usually, cause i dont need to do real time signal processing on the inputs, and i only play the s/w synths when i am composing, so i dont need the low latency and i can get more tracks and efx.. very easy to use once you understand the flexibility and the structure of the system. sounds better than a lot of cd's i have!

Bought it after reading Kilo,s original rave review.
What to add, this system is rock solid.
No sync problems midi/audio ,real time fx in vst(3.7)and monitoring.
I happily loop anything,Midi or Audio,it never crashes.
Audio quality very clear, the new drivers with gsif support seem even more stable.
I run an XP30,A4K and Nova via a Folio sx ,using Direct Outs in Mono for KIK,Snare,Hats, and 7/8 as stereo for synths via my sub-out.
I monitor back from Out 1/2 on a spare stereo channel to hear fx,recorded Wav etc .(don,t sub-mix that!)
Just started playing with Orion too, here i get pops if i set Latency too low,so ,perhaps not ok for playing from my controller.....
Have some vst Instruments to try too,so,more to look forward to.
I already gave it my "product of the year"award.
    Get one.

    cheers DJ Rossiaud(aka guruzoo)

well, thomann are usualy very cheap, but they only sell in EU, so if you are outside the EU then try something else... If you like you can order from thomann with this URL and we get a small commission - we've established a partnership with thomann and our Dancetech/thomann store is opening soon, but until we get the ordering section implemented & integrated into thomann's order system you can input this URL and if you do so and they buy the product from that page online, we get a small commision... Use this URL

    http://www.thomann.de/partner_redirect.html?partner_id=69182&page=thoiw2_artikel-142829.html

that'll open the page for the product & log our ID for the sale if you then go to 'purchase' from that page - or by phone, quote our partner_ID in the URL above if you'd like some commission to go to us...

Thomann are ok, and are offering to help us out with review gear & competition prizes for our readers, so give them some props...

hey, your music sounds ok tho, but I couldnt listen to more than one track at the SF site then when I click to listen to another it wants me to register with a big form of details - you should add your music here at Dancetech.

    Hi,
    you didn't menation ( maybe you did ?? ) the other inputs/outputs ...
There are also two digital channels ...9 and 10.
Pro's can use these to connect to Clocking devices, and/or digital inputs ( better A/D's or preamps with digital out ) and digital outputs ( such as external DAT or CDR ).
I send my stereo mix through the coax and into a TC electronic for finalizing before feeding into my external CDR by coax again. no transfer loss.
I also use Lucid ADA1000 converters through the digital in's - very versatile !
They should mount all the connector's on the back though, and give a manual volume control over outputs 1/2 like the headphone pot to compliment the all the active monitor's coming out these days.
    Cheers

Yeah yeah, this is a fine soundcard. Never anything about it I didnt like. BUT How about adding a damn driver download to this site!?!?
I soooo tired of searching for drivers every time I install on a new computer. When you take the time to make a page like this, take the time to add a driver download by the picture of the hardware please!!!
And of course you cant add link in theese reviews, so noone here can even help me by answering. Dammit.
