Yamaha DX100

The DX100 is a small mini sized keyboard, with guitar strap toggles on either end... small, Light & easily trasportable in a bag or holdall, this synth whilst having a mini-feel packs the punch with 4 banks external & 4 banks internal plus a performance bank each of 24 sounds.

As this is the one that originated chicago house it has gained status as it has all the presets, however Derrick May's DX100 of the time at some point had an Oberheim Matrix 12 filter shoe-horned into it but whatever, this is the one wqith the Solid Bass & house organ presets that have been used endlessly

With a patch dump, theoretically, it is possible to save the main sounds its famous for & dump them to any of the other 4 OP Yamaha FM units like the TX81Z, DX9, DX27, 21 etc... however they would have to have the same algorithms as the DX100, so that'd have to be checked....

The mini keys can go on these, but it's the sounds you want & if they keys go you just trigger it from another master MIDI keyboard or pencil in notes in your DAW

A veritable House Jungle garage & whatever else - fest... garage & house & to an extent Jungle & drum & bass are this synths mainstay, but i've heard high-pitched harp patches ripping fast arppegios on Hard House tunes and many others....

Cheezy organs, solid bass and lots inbetween.....

this synth iz very very under rated. I use it in almost every track. tha EPz sound tha same as tha onez on tha DX7. tha organz can be tweek'd to get very usable onez. it even does very phat analog bassez that are dirtyer than a $5 whore. and letz not forget tha insane buzzez, rumblez, wind noisez and metalic stabz you can get outa this thing, makin' it very good for experimental noize/ambient stuff. there, now u have no reason not to get one. especialy now that they're goin' for $100-$150

Heh, somebody just gave me one of these, very, very fun shit, hard to get anything useful out of one, you'll need an fx processor and something like a sherman filterbank would be good too, but the sounds that come out from it are like nothing else, they are dirt cheap, i highly reccomend one...

True, some eq, and reverb is all it needs. The strings are nice and great for slide fx with porta, and the pianos and basses are perfect for old chicago house. I love mine. Got it for $80. Orbital used it extensively on Halcyon.

on the dx100, the 4 buttons marked Bank a, b, c & d are also marked in purple text as: operator/ams on/off - you enter EDIT with the main EDIT/COMPARE button, then follow the purple-text above each button for the parameters - when in edit mode, each of the 4 OPERATOR buttons switches the 4 operators on/off so you can hear each one in isolation as you edit, but remember to look at which algorithm you are using for the sound cos the operators effect each other where they are stacked in series. There is no filter by the way on a dx.

I think I have this (power) problem 10-15 years ago...

First, I found than the soldering on the PCB was realy fragile, so every connectors
was easy to broke the solder link (sorry for my poor english...)

Second, the adaptor (AC to DC) is -in between- 2 kind of jack; so if the first jack of
my universal AC/DC adaptor was to small and, with heavy use, the 2nd jack is OK
but is too large and give a lot of space in the soket of the DX... (I hope you can
understand what I thy to say...)

Good luck

An awesome little synth in every respect - versatile, bombproof and always sounds fresh as a daisy. It has consistently managed to fit in with every composition I have created over the last 20 years. It does sound incredible through external effects: I use mine with a Zoom9001, Electroharmonix Phaser pedal and Sherman Filterbank. If it had been built with analogue filtering, it would have been incredible.

The only problem I have with it is that the buttons on the front panel are starting to fail, so it may be transplanted into a custom built case with new buttons in due course.

Original asking price was £349, I bought mine from my music teacher in 1985 for £150 2nd hand and I have seen them going for between £85 and £100 in the present day.

Yes, this often happens when the thing has been dropped or the circuit boards disconnected - often necessary when cleaning the key contacts. There is a button sequence in the manual to reset the user defaults and go back to the original software image. It's in the user manual, but is (if I remember correctly) hold down these buttons together:

internal, function, yes and no for 30 seconds.

Hope I've got this right. Loz :o)
