Yamaha CS01

The CS01 was released in 1982 for a measly £189 GBP. Yes it's small & toy-like. Yes it runs of mains or batteries, but it's an all analog mono-synth dammit! The CS01 is packed with the results of Yamaha Synth Technology. VCO equipped with 5 types of sound source waveforms, low-pass filter, resonance, and EG depth. And EG adopts orthodox ASDR type.

You can enjoy the fun of synthesising and the wide range of sound variations. Moreover, since it has a built-in 2-WAY speaker and a 2-way power supply system with AC / AA batteries, you can start playing anytime, anywhere. Headphone monitor is also OK. In addition, I was very conscious of the stage effect of standing play. Leave choking play to the pitch bend wheel, and vibrato and wah-wah to the modulation wheel. Another thing to watch out for is the breath controller (sold separately). You can develop a solo that is as good as a horn player.

This synth is probably more powerful than most realize. It has great bass sounds and nice lead sounds as well. Mine has a REZ knob mod as well as a mod that permits you to utilize the Breath controller knobs without using a breath controller. This allows you to make it drone away for hours, while you tweak it's knobs and faders to make the coolest acid noises.

I picked up a CS01Mk2 for £40 in a junk shop. Without any syncing ability it was useful for making sounds to sample, especially wierd percussion, however I really wanted to use it for its fat PWM basses. I just spent 10 times that original price getting CV & Gate sockets fitted by Kenton Electronics, along with their amazing Pro 2000 Midi to CV converter. This has really expanded the CS01's potential as I can also control the filter via midi; have a programmable range for pitch bending, & also can use the Pro 2000's LFOs on the CS01. It makes a great little acid machine now, plus the percussion noises that can be squeezed from its white noise generator & squeaky filter can be played by my MPC & tweaked with a mod wheel. I guess this a review of the Pro 2000 as much as the CS01, plus I was also buying ability to control a Juno 60 & an SH101. If you see a CS01 cheap, buy it. Be prepared to spend a lot if you want to really use it though. I have given it 4/5 in its retro-fitted form, but without I guess it is only 2/5.

WoaH, you cannot say more about that rocknroll machine?
It is one of the greatest low budget lead synths you`ll ever get, simply because it sounds EVIL, is STRAP-ON, and comes with a built in speaker!
I ues it with a BIG MUFF, BOSS Phaser and BOSS OCTAVE for true Terror. You can get it to sound sweet, too.
I love it and would never trade it.

Cheers,
Stefan

I'm just getting into the electronic music creation scene, and I pulled this baby from the bottom of the cupboard, which my mum bought a long time ago. Like many I thought it was a toy, but boy was I wrong! Plenty of evil sound can be made!! (I'm not sure what my mum bought it for though!)
Only one key can be pressed at a time, but when using for bass lines there's no problem.

"bella"

Yes indeed!
I got an old pretty used an beat up MK 1 with the hi-lo res. switch. I cleaned it up and did some soldering to get all the keys working. Tweaked some of the trim pots and replaced the Hi-Lo switch with a 10k pot. while at it I replaced the sliders for the "whole" filter section with rotary knobs and placed them just over the breath/volume pots. This made this machine much more usable. I like it a lot. Actually I prefer using this simple little machine rather than my An1x when I feel like banging away on the keys for a while.

Anyone else around that made any tweaks to CS01??

k, I got one... bought it as a wee lad back in 1984. Some functions don't work after I tried to clean it inside once. But it still plays. Monophonic. Use it for wind sounds, leads and bass. Best thing tho is the black/green color...

I've been trying to get a cv kit for my cs-01 so I can sync it to
a sequencer, but the only kit ever put out was by kenton and
they no longer make it. Does anyone know of any other
company that made this product? Does anyone have an extra
one lying around? And if not I was wondering if anyone knows
how to build one? THanks.
