Yamaha TX81Z

The TX81Z came along about 1986, and offered extra facilities of up to 8 part multi-mode, in a rack.

Some say it's murder to edit....We-e-e-e-l-l... i reckon that is bollox... it's actually pretty straightforward, but like all these older unitsm, trying it without a manual, is a waste of time, cos these older units assign numbers to parameters......

Anyhow... More Yammy vintage FM, the mainstay of dance styles especially Garage & house, and to an extent Jungle/drum&bass etc...... excellent unit.... 2 outs as well, so it'll do 2 sounds on... yup... 2 outputs !!.....

Comments please.....

Bought one a while ago for less than 100$US. No manual but it actually wasn't to hard to figure out.
FM has a bad reputation as a maker of cheezy, very bad imitations of acoustic instruments. But once you actually start to learn how FM works you can do all sorts of cool stuff, from harsh, grating gabber noise to beautiful, deep, ever-so-slightly-tweaked sine basses.

Great, buy one!
This thing is extrememly solid, and very dependable. It never looses its memory and turns on the way you left it.
You can layer up to 8 sounds at once to create truly evil bass. It's also good at high pitched eary noises. If you're at all into acid house then this can provide a lot of satisfaction.
I use soundiver to edit it and I think that you should track down an editor (not too tricky on the web), the manula is also available from yamaha to download.
I have recently been playing with FM7 (soft FM synth) loading up patches from the TX81z into it. I was expecting that my computer would make me think about selling the synth but the sounds sounded so much better coming from the hardware. The soft synth version is very smooth but thats not what this synth is about.
Certainly not an allround synth but for £100 or so you cant go wrong.

I bought one last week for £125 in order to add FM to my set up. I was not expecting the totally hard bass sound. What a bargain. This synth rocks for v little cash. I'm going to get another.
DEEP Bass grungy and no other word for it hard digital noise

Well fter selling some other bits of kit this thing still rocks!
I have discovered so many things with it.
I started playing with the built in delay recently (midi delay) and found you can set each delayed note to step up or down in pitch.
Suddenly I have sounds from old Detroit records coming out of my speakers!

I have also found that if you have logic running a sequence and then you open soundiver you can edit the synth in real time just as if it were a soft synth, I think you can even assign midi controllers to it but I've not tried that yet.
I saw one recently for £70, these things are a bargain!

Love it, I got mine for under $100 and it works great. Right now I'm running it with
an electribe and a Korg DW 8000. the Korg feeds a Yamaha drum machine and it all
pumps thru a Mackie 16 channel board into the Crown amp and out Yamaha
speakers. Sounds awesome. We're doing industrial stuff, I jump on real drums when
I can and a bud plays guitar. Party nites we add bass and another 6 string and a key
player and I drum full time. Rock on!
